Abstract

“What impact has city life on the individual–our behavior, personality, values, relationships?” George Simmel's 1905 publication of “The metropolis and mental life” remains a seminal essay on this central yet neglected question which we now term “urban psychology.” The centenary of Simmel's essay in 2005 is an apt time to take stock of the history and current status of urban psychology, with a special issue of this journal gathering data-based articles on diverse aspects of urban psychology. This four-part article (a) summarizes Simmel's 1905 essay, (b) comments on the dramatic population trends since 1905, (c) elaborates on 10 remarkable points about urban psychology, past and present, and (d) previews the five urban pychology reports in this special issue.

This essay contrasts two different modes of iconic appropriation and organizational symbolism, with reference to a single physical structure: on the one hand, that of a local folk society, seeking to define itself and preserve its distinctiveness as against the wider nation state of which it is a part; and, on the other hand, that of the nation-state itself, seeking to incorporate the diverse elements out of which it is constituted into a coherent synthesis. Both modes operate by selecting particular elements out of the material remains and recoding them within specific ideologies, although they go about their “symbolic work” in strikingly different ways, the one technologically passive and the other technologically proactive. Moreover, of these two appropriations, one (that of the nation) is hegemonic, in that it imposes itself and pre-empts the other. By reference to diverse historical examples, the discussion in the latter part of the paper attempts to elucidate the salient features of symbolic hegemony.

SUMMARY

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of selected modules of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (KID-SCID, Version 1.0). The Disruptive Behavior Disorders (i.e., ADHD, ODD, CD) and Substance Related Disorders modules of the KID-SCID were administered to 50 adolescents receiving residential treatment for substance abuse and severe behavioral problems. This study examined available evidence for inter-rater reliability and convergent validity. Convergent validity was demonstrated for the Disruptive Behavior Disorders module, however, the Substance Abuse Disorders module failed to converge with frequency of use for most substances. Inter-rater reliability was generally high. This research provides initial evidence for both the reliability and validity of the Disruptive Behavior and Substance Abuse Disorders modules of the KID-SCID, making these modules useful in clinical practice with adolescents in treatment for substance abuse and conduct disorder.

This article introduces the initial issue of the new Journal of Child Custody and lays the framework for an emerging field. To date there is no peer-reviewed journal dedicated specifically and only to issues related to child custody. Something has been missing in the field of child custody. The Journal of Child Custody provides the missing piece in the puzzle called child custody.

Empirical studies of occupational structure in South Africa have tended to be unsatisfactory, detailed work on small sectors of the economy coexisting with across‐the‐board studies too crudely aggregated to allow for a precise assessment of a changing situation. This study presents the results of an analysis by ‘race’ into 14 occupational groups of South African employment outside agriculture, domestic service and the informal sector over the period 1969 to 1977. It argues that over the period there has been a definite increase in the share of owner I manager and, more particularly, petty bourgeois occupations, with a corresponding decline in the proportion of unskilled workers. It also suggests that changes in the ‘racial’ division of labour are more complex than has sometimes been supposed.
