Pathological gambling (PG) has been identified in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) treated with dopamine agonists suggesting
that dysregulation of brain dopaminergic activity may contribute to the development of gambling problems. The current study
was undertaken to further establish the prevalence of problem and PG in patients with PD, identify any clinical correlates,
and determine if psychiatric or substance use co-morbidity contributes to the increased prevalence of problem and PG. A cross-sectional
survey of 140 serially recruited moderate to severe PD patients was undertaken utilizing the Canadian Problem Gambling Index,
Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, Drug Abuse Screening Test, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and
Mini-Mental State Exam augmented by chart review, completed over an 8 month period. The 12 month prevalence of problem and
PG in PD was 9.3% compared to 1.6% in the general population within a comparably aged sample. The increased prevalence of
problem and PG in the PD group was related to dopamine agonist use and younger age, but not co-morbidity. Most subjects with
problem and PG reported their gambling increased after being diagnosed with PD and starting treatment. The results suggest
that brain dopaminergic activity is involved in the underlying neurobiology of problem and PG. 相似文献

In several jurisdictions around the world, venue staff are encouraged to make reasonable attempts to determine whether patrons
may be experiencing problems associated with their gambling. Although a number of visible indicators and behaviours are recognised
as being indicative of gambling problems, no research has investigated how effective staff might be in identifying problem
gamblers in venues. The aim of this field test was to examine the level of patron familiarity amongst staff working in small
to moderate-sized venues. Patrons (n = 303) were asked to complete a short survey including the Problem Gambling Severity Index and venue staff were asked to
describe their knowledge of the same patrons independently. The results showed that patrons rated as more at risk by staff
scored significantly higher on the PGSI, but that point-in-time staff ratings were not sufficiently accurate to allow effective
identification of problem gamblers. The importance of using accumulated information over multiple sessions as well as technological
monitoring of behaviour was emphasised by these results. 相似文献

Gambling participation rates among older adults (65+ years) have been increasing in recent years. Very few studies have compared older and younger gamblers on gambling motivation and problem gambling. This study compared 41 male and 63 female older gamblers (66-87 years; median 73) to 20 male and 85 female younger gamblers (17-34 years; median 20) in New Zealand on gambling involvement, gambling motives and number of gambling related problems in the previous 12 months. The questionnaire included the Gambling Motivation Scale (GMS) and the Revised South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS-R) of current problem gambling. There were between-group age differences but no significant gender or gender by age interaction effects. While older adults had significantly lower scores on all the measures, except they gambled more frequently, for both groups frequency of gambling, number of activities, largest amount spent in a single session and all motives were correlated with SOGS-R scores. Preferences for electronic gaming machines and bingo were related to SOGS-R scores for both age groups. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that after statistically controlling for age, gambling involvement and other motives, tension release uniquely predicted SOGS-R scores. For both age groups, increasing severity of problem gambling is more likely to be associated with releasing tension than with winning money or seeking sensation. 相似文献

This study describes the extent and distribution of gambling among Norwegian adolescents. The study assesses whether gambling
frequency and expenditures and prevalence of problem gambling are associated both at the individual and aggregate (school)
level, and in particular whether the total consumption model applies to gambling behaviour. Data comprised a national representative
sample of 11,637 13- to 19-year-old students in 73 schools (response rate 92.3%). The Lie/Bet Questionnaire and an additional
DSM-criterion on chasing the losses were applied to assess problem gambling. A majority (78.5%) had gambled during the last
year and 3.1% met all three criteria for problem gambling. Gambling frequency and expenditures were much higher among problem
gamblers and increased proportionally with the degree of problem gambling. The 6.1% who scored on both Lie/Bet items accounted
for 59% of all gambling expenditures on slot machines. Positive and significant correlations between various indicators of
problem gambling and the overall amount of gambling at the aggregate (school) level imply that the higher the overall amount
of gambling and gambling expenditures are, the higher the prevalence of problem gambling, which indicates that the total consumption
model also applies to gambling behaviour among adolescents. 相似文献

This paper examined the nature of irrational gambling-related cognitions in a sample of 926 adolescents (mean age = 14.5 years) sampled from Australian schools. Students were differentiated according to gambling status and administered a series of items that assessed their understanding of objective odds, the nature of randomness, the role of skill in gambling, and the perceived profitability of gambling. The results confirmed previous findings that problem gamblers tend to be more irrational in their perceptions, as indicated by stronger beliefs in the role of skilful play in chance activities, and that gambling is a potentially profitable activity. However, counter intuitively, problem gamblers did not appear to have any poorer understanding of objective probabilities. These results are discussed in terms of Sevigny and Ladouceur’s (2004) concept of cognitive switching as well as psychological research concerning the role of emotional and motivational factors in the development of an illusion of control. The implications of these findings for gambling education programs are discussed.

Using the method of centre stage diagramming, this 3-year [2007–2009] longitudinal study reports a single case study of Ben and Mary that maps the onset of Alzheimer's disease within Ben's late-stage Parkinson's disease and the impact, adjustment and meaning that this had for the couple. It is believed that that this is the first time that such a transition has been documented within a qualitative research design. The importance of Ben and Mary obtaining a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is reported as the diagnosis helped to locate the meaning of Ben's memory and behavioural changes within a ‘dementia’ context, rather than as an extension of late-onset Parkinson's disease as was originally considered by the couple. Ben and Mary's search for stability within their life once the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease was made is also shared. The couple was recruited from the caseload of a Parkinson's disease nurse specialist in North Wales and the couple was visited five times over the duration of the study. All interviews were conducted in Ben and Mary's own home and with their full involvement in the development and reporting of each centre stage diagram. Policy and practice implications are also considered. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate gambling participation and problem gambling among Icelandic adolescents. Participants were 750 16–18-year-old students, 371 girls and 379 boys. The rate of problem gambling was estimated with the SOGS-RA and DSM-IV-MR-J. Results indicated that 96% of adolescents had gambled in their lifetime, 79% at least once in the preceding year and about 10% gamble at least once a week. A psychometric evaluation of the two screening scales revealed satisfactory reliabilities and factor structures for both scales. The DSM-IV-MR-J identified 2% of the participants as problem gamblers while SOGS-RA identified 2.7%, and problem gambling was more common among boys than girls. It was concluded that problem gambling among adolescents is an area of concern for the Icelandic community that needs to be further investigated. 相似文献

Little work has examined the interrelations among intimate partner violence (IPV), alcohol use, and gambling behavior, and no studies have examined these relationships among males court-ordered to batterer intervention programs (BIPs). The aim of the current investigation was to explore the associations between IPV, alcohol use, and gambling behavior among 341 males court-mandated to attend BIPs utilizing self-report measures. Voluntary, anonymous questionnaires were administered and completed during regularly scheduled BIP sessions. Compared to the general population, a higher percentage of the sample met criteria for pathological gambling (9%), and problem gambling (17%). Further, males exhibiting pathological gambling were more likely to be hazardous drinkers, and hazardous drinkers were more likely to exhibit pathological gambling. Additionally, pathological gamblers were at an increased risk for the perpetration of both physical and sexual aggression. Finally, gambling behavior uniquely predicted the perpetration of sexual aggression above and beyond alcohol use, impulsivity, and relationship satisfaction. The implications of these results for future research and intervention are discussed. 相似文献

Studies from the West suggest that significant numbers of high school students gamble, despite it being illegal in this age group. To date, there have been no studies on the prevalence of gambling among senior high school and higher secondary school students in India. This study reports point prevalence of gambling and its psychosocial correlates among high school students in the State of Kerala, India. 5043 high school students in the age group 15–19 years, from 73 schools, were selected by cluster random sampling from the district of Ernakulam, Kerala, South India. They completed questionnaires that assessed gambling, substance use, psychological distress, suicidality, and symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Of a total of 4989 completed questionnaires, 1400 (27.9 %) high school students reported to have ever gambled and 353 (7.1 %) were problem gamblers. Of those who had ever gambled, 25.2 % were problem gamblers. Sports betting (betting on cricket and football) was the most popular form of gambling followed by the lottery. Problem gamblers when compared with non-problem gamblers and non-gamblers were significantly more likely to be male, have academic failures, have higher rates of lifetime alcohol and tobacco use, psychological distress, suicidality, history of sexual abuse and higher ADHD symptom scores. Gambling among adolescents in India deserves greater attention, as one in four students who ever gambled was a problem gambler and because of its association with a range of psychosocial variables. 相似文献

Young people are a high risk group for gambling problems and university (college) students fall into that category. Given the high accessibility of gambling in Australia and its association with entertainment, students from overseas countries, particularly those where gambling is restricted or illegal, may be particularly vulnerable. This study examines problem gambling and its correlates among international and domestic university students using a sample of 836 domestic students (286 males; 546 females); and 764 international students (369 males; 396 females) at three Australian universities. Our findings indicate that although most students gamble infrequently, around 5 % of students are problem gamblers, a proportion higher than that in the general adult population. Popular gambling choices include games known to be associated with risk (cards, horse races, sports betting, casino games, and gaming machines) as well as lotto/scratch tickets. Males are more likely to be problem gamblers than females, and almost 10 % of male international students could be classified as problem gamblers. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that male gender, international student status, financial stress, negative affect and frequency of gambling on sports, horses/dogs, table games, casino gaming machines, internet casino games and bingo all significantly predicted problem gambling. Results from this study could inform gambling-education programs in universities as they indicate which groups are more vulnerable and specify which games pose more risk of problem gambling. 相似文献

General Practitioners (GPs) are well placed to identify problem gamblers and provide early intervention. To date there is
no evidence to suggest that GP’s are routinely screening patients for potential gambling problems. This paper discusses the
prevalence of problem gambling, the links with other health problems and ways that GPs can assist. Results from a pilot project
that provided educational resources to GPS are also discussed. Suitable screening tools are available that could easily be
used by GPs to assess the possibility of gambling problems in patients who may be at increased risk but do not seek help.
Early identification and intervention may help prevent a gambling habit escalating to a serious problem. More work needs to
be done to increase awareness with GPs of the extent of problem gambling in our community and to alert patients to the fact
that gambling can affect their health and that GPs can help. 相似文献

We extend the literature on female autonomy along two dimensions. We first develop a new, direct female autonomy index using survey responses of spouses to a variety of household decision-making questions. We then examine the effects of a mother’s autonomy on her child’s secondary enrollment. We find that our measure is consistent with some of the existing autonomy measures, and that higher autonomy of mothers is correlated with higher secondary enrollment for boys, but not girls. Our results are robust to a range of sensitivity tests. 相似文献

Casino exclusion programs are intended to prevent or limit gambling-related harm. Although previous research showed that self-exclusion is associated with reduced gambling, it remains unknown whether self- and forced excluded subjects show different patterns of gambling behavior and if exclusion from casino gambling affects all gambling activities. The present study retrospectively investigated (1) the role of voluntariness of exclusion for the first time, and (2) general gambling behavior of excluded individuals before and after exclusion. A total of N = 215 casino excluders (self-excluders: n = 187, forced excluders: n = 28) completed an online survey or a face-to-face interview up to 8 years after enrollment. Self- and forced excluders showed similar rates of abstinence (self-excluders: 19.3%, forced excluders: 28.6%) and reduction (self-excluders: 67.4%, forced excluders: 60.7%), even though forced excluders reported a significantly greater initial gambling intensity compared to self-excluders (e.g., pre-exclusion gambling time; self-excluders: 3.2 days/week, forced excluders: 4.3 days/week). Overall, results indicated that 20.5% of excluders stopped all gambling activities and another 66.5% reduced their gambling. Those who continued gambling significantly reduced this behavior in every segment, except for gambling halls. Findings indicate that self- and forced exclusion are associated with similarly reduced gambling behavior, even in non-excluded segments. However, unchanged gambling in gambling halls emphasizes the importance to implement consistent exclusion programs over all gambling segments. 相似文献

This article provides an examination of the effects of the divorce and separation process on children’s academic achievement and problem behavior over time. By using child fixed effects and establishing a baseline period that is four or more years prior to a family disruption, I can examine how children are affected in different periods relative to the disruption and whether any negative effects subside, persist, or escalate as time passes from the disruption. With a sample of 7- to 14-year-olds, I find that children are affected at least two to four years before the disruption; reading test scores are most affected; and for reading comprehension, the negative effects persist and even escalate as time passes from the disruption. 相似文献

Promotions for online sports betting during televised sports broadcasts are regularly viewed by millions of Australians, raising concerns about their impacts on vulnerable groups including at-risk and problem gamblers. This study examined whether responses to these promotions varied with problem gambling severity amongst 455 Australian Internet sports bettors participating in an online survey. Results indicated that young male Internet sports bettors are especially vulnerable to gambling problems, particularly if they hold positive attitudes to gambling sponsors who embed promotions into sports broadcasts and to the promotional techniques they use and this heightens the risk that alluring messages contribute to excessive gambling. As problem gambling severity increased, so too did recognition that these promotions have impacted negatively on their sports betting behaviour. Because a plethora of sports betting brands and promotions are now heavily integrated into sports coverage, social marketing efforts are needed to offset their persuasive appeal and counter the positive attitudes towards them that appear linked to excessive gambling amongst Internet sports bettors. 相似文献
