Social desirability bias (SDB) is the tendency in respondents to answer questions untruthfully in the hope of giving good impression to others. SDB occurs when the survey question is highly sensitive or personal. The Randomized Response Technique (RRT) is one of several methods to get around SDB in face-to-face interview surveys involving sensitive questions. In this article, we first review some of the existing binary response RRT models. Then, we propose a new model—Two-Stage Binary Optional RRT model. Much of the focus is on estimating π, the prevalence of sensitive characteristic, and ω, the sensitivity level of the underlying question. We discuss the asymptotic properties of our estimators and present some simulation results. It turns out that the proposed Two-Stage Binary Optional RRT model is more effective than the Optional RRT model proposed by Gupta (2001).  相似文献

Kalucha et al. (Kalucha G., Gupta S., Dass B. K. (accepted). Ratio estimation of finite population mean using optional randomized response models. Journal of Statistical Theory and Practice) introduced an additive ratio estimator for finite population mean of a sensitive variable in simple random sampling without replacement and showed that this estimator performs better than the ordinary mean estimator based on an optional randomized response technique (RRT). In this paper, we introduce a regression estimator that performs better than the ratio estimator even for the modest correlation between the study and the auxiliary variables. A comparison of the proposed estimator with the corresponding ratio estimator and the ordinary RRT mean estimator is carried out theoretically, and is also illustrated with a simulation study.  相似文献

In this paper, an optional randomized response model is proposed. The estimator of the mean of the stigmatized variable based on the optional randomized response sampling is shown to be more efficient than the usual estimator of the mean based on randomized response technique method. In addition to estimating population mean and variance, it has been shown that the optional randomized response technique is useful in quantifying the sensitivity levels of the questions in the personal interview surveys. An estimator for the sensitivity level of a question is proposed and an empirical study is carried out to show the validity of the proposed estimation technique. We also propose a test for the sensitivity level of the stigmatized variable.  相似文献

The randomized response technique (RRT) is an important tool that is commonly used to protect a respondent’s privacy and avoid biased answers in surveys on sensitive issues. In this work, we consider the joint use of the unrelated-question RRT of Greenberg et al. (J Am Stat Assoc 64:520–539, 1969) and the related-question RRT of Warner (J Am Stat Assoc 60:63–69, 1965) dealing with the issue of an innocuous question from the unrelated-question RRT. Unlike the existing unrelated-question RRT of Greenberg et al. (1969), the approach can provide more information on the innocuous question by using the related-question RRT of Warner (1965) to effectively improve the efficiency of the maximum likelihood estimator of Scheers and Dayton (J Am Stat Assoc 83:969–974, 1988). We can then estimate the prevalence of the sensitive characteristic by using logistic regression. In this new design, we propose the transformation method and provide large-sample properties. From the case of two survey studies, an extramarital relationship study and a cable TV study, we develop the joint conditional likelihood method. As part of this research, we conduct a simulation study of the relative efficiencies of the proposed methods. Furthermore, we use the two survey studies to compare the analysis results under different scenarios.  相似文献

We study a multiplicative randomized response method for obtaining responses to sensitive questions when the answers are quantitative. The method involves the respondent multiplying his sensitive answer by a random number from a known distribution, and giving the product to the interviewer, who does not know the value of the random number and thus receives a scrambled response. Some particular distributions for the random scrambling number are proposed and studied, and ways of generating the scrambling numbers are discussed. Some modifications for increasing the efficiency of the method are proposed, and numerical results are given that show the scrambled response method is generally superior to the previously used method of randomizing questions.  相似文献

针对最低工资调查中出现的敏感性问题,引入随机化回答技术,并针对定性和定量两类敏感性问题,分别引入不同的随机化回答模型。同时还考虑到最低工资调查中,不同调查单位对同一问题敏感程度不相同的特性,在定量问题的随机化回答模型中引入敏感性水平,对原有模型进行有效的改进,使被调查者能够更加积极配合最低工资调查,从而能够进一步减少由于各类敏感性问题造成的非抽样误差。这套随机化处理方法还可推广应用到其他类型的敏感性问题中。  相似文献

This study focuses on the estimation of population mean of a sensitive variable in stratified random sampling based on randomized response technique (RRT) when the observations are contaminated by measurement errors (ME). A generalized estimator of population mean is proposed by using additively scrambled responses for the sensitive variable. The expressions for the bias and mean square error (MSE) of the proposed estimator are derived. The performance of the proposed estimator is evaluated both theoretically and empirically. The randomized response technique (RRT) is an important tool, commonly used to avoid biased answers in survey on sensitive issues by preserving the respondents’ privacy. In this paper, we introduce a data collection method for survey on sensitive issues combining both the unrelated-question RRT and the direct question design. The direct questioning method is utilized to obtain responses to a non sensitive question that is related to the innocuous question from the unrelated-question RRT. These responses serve as additional information that can be used to improve the estimation of the prevalence of the sensitive behavior. Furthermore, we propose two new methods for the estimation of the proportion of respondents possessing the sensitive attribute under a missing data setup. More specifically, we develop the weighted estimator and the weighted conditional likelihood estimator. The performances of our estimators are studied numerically and compared with that of an existing one. Both proposed estimators are more efficient than the Greenberg's estimator. We illustrate our methods using real data from a survey study on illegal use of cable TV service in Taiwan.  相似文献

The randomized response technique is a method of interviewing which allows estimation of population proportion or mean of a sensitive characteristic while maintaining anonymity of response. This is accomplished by use of two questions in the interview, one sensitive and one not so, with the respondent applying a random device to determine which question to answer. The statistician knows the parameters of the random device but is kept from knowledge of individual outcomes. When the nonsensitive question bears on a matter quite foreign to the sensitive characteristic, it is termed an unrelated question, and the associated technique carries that designation. Critical in the construction of such a model are the assigned probability p that the respondent will select the sensitive question and the proportion Πy of the population having the unrelated nonsensitive characteristic. The choice of these parameters is discussed herein with reference to the risks perceived by respondents.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of estimating the population mean of a sensitive variable in presence of scrambled response. We have suggested a randomized response model which uses known values of mean and variance of scrambling variable. We have shown that the proposed randomized response model is always better than that of Gjestvang and Singh's (2009) and Singh and Tarray's (2014) randomized response models. Randomized response techniques (RRTs) have been proposed in survey sampling literature as a solution to the problem of social desirability bias (SDB) while dealing with sensitive questions. All RRTs reduce the SDB by introducing privacy protection for the respondents, but the variances of the estimates become larger compared with the ones obtained from direct questioning technique (DQT). The success of RRTs heavily depends on the assumption that the variable of interest is in fact sensitive for the population under study. There might be situations, however, where a presumably sensitive question is not considered to be sensitive in some populations, in which case using an RRT instead of the DQT would inflate the variance of the estimates unreasonably. In this study, we propose a two-stage sampling procedure for a binary response, which enables one to accurately estimate both the prevalence of the sensitive characteristic and the probability of cheating in a population. The proposed model allows one to choose between an RRT and the DQT. We support our theoretical results with numerous simulations.  相似文献

ESTIMATING A LOGIT MODEL WITH RANDOMIZED DATA: THE CASE OF COCAINE USE   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In his influential book, Maddala (1983) suggests combining randomized response survey data with other personal information to estimate logit models predicting immoral, unpopular, or unlawful behaviour. This study is one of the first to implement this technique using real data. Models of college students' recent cocaine use are estimated with academic performance and socio-economic characteristics as determinants. Parameter estimates obtained from randomized response surveys are compared to those obtained using conventional, direct question surveys. The results indicate that randomized response estimates provide useful information on the degree to which inferences regarding the determinants of cocaine use are sensitive to survey type.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of estimation of population mean of a sensitive characteristics using non-sensitive auxiliary variable at current move in two move successive sampling. The proposed estimator is studied under five different scrambled response models. Various estimators have been elaborated to be the member of the proposed class of estimators. The properties of the proposed estimators have been analysed. Many estimators belonging to the proposed class have been explored under five scrambled response models. In order to identify the scrambled model effect, the proposed composite class of estimators is compared to the direct methods. Respondents privacy protection have also been elaborated under different models. Theoretical results are supplemented with numerical demonstrations using real data. Simulation has been carried out to show the applicability of proposed estimators and hence suitable recommendations are forwarded.  相似文献

In order to produce estimates of the number of women having abortions during a 12-month period in the conterminous United States, the randomized response technique was used in the 1973 National Survey of Family Growth. The model applied used 2 unrelated questions in separate half-samples, with a coin as the randomizing device. The randomized response technique resulted in a higher estimate for the number of women with abortions that has previously been obtained through direct questions or reporting systems. The overall estimated proportion who had abortions among women who had been married or who had their own children in the household is 3.0% with a standardized error of 0.8 percentage points; however, there is a wide variation in the half-sample estimates of abortion. Differences between the 2 half-samples led to an examination of possible measurement error. 3 types of errors in measurement which may affect the estimate based on the randomized response technique are: 1) error in the answer to the sensitive question on abortion under the randomized response conditions; 2) error in the answer to the innocuous question under randomized response conditions; and 3) error in the answer to the innocuous question when asked directly. Comparisons between data from the different sources for currently married women suggest that all differences are not due to measurement error and that a large number of women had an unreported and/or illegal abortion in 1973. Although the randomized response models have been in use for at least 10 years, there continues to be a need for work on the field administration and subsequent analysis of these models.  相似文献

Randomized response models have been used to estimate a population proportion of a sensitive attribute. A randomized device is typically employed to protect respondent's privacy in a survey. In addition, an unrelated question is asked to improve the statistical efficiency. In this article, we propose Bayesian estimation of rare sensitive attribute using randomized response technique, which includes a rare unrelated attribute. Two cases are considered, the proportion of a rare unrelated attribute is known and unknown. A simulation study is conducted to assess the performance of the models using mean absolute error and coverage probability. The results show that the performance depends on the parameters and is robust to priors.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with making a Bayesian comparison between the two types of survey sampling procedures where the individuals are asked sensitive questions. The randomized response procedure is designed to obtain information in such a way that the respondent is protected against revealing his/her status about the sensitive issue. In voluntary response model each individual chooses either to respond or not to respond. It is assumed that the respondents do not falsify their answers. The problem of interest is to estimate the proportion of the sampled population who belong to the sensitive group. A beta prior distribution is used for the proportion of interest. Unlike the usual randomized response techniques, as a pioneering attempt, this article focuses on using non identical independent Bernoulli trials in sensitive surveys. For this purpose, a general class of randomized response techniques is considered. The usual randomized response techniques are based on a fixed probability of having a yes answer. Contrary to usual techniques, in the proposed technique every respondent has a different probability of reporting a yes answer. With this setting, in most of the situations, the proposed technique is observed performing better in terms of variability. To illustrate and support the superiority of the proposed technique it is compared with models such as Warner (1965), Greenberg et al. (1969), Mangat and Singh (1990), and Mangat (1994) using identical Bernoulli trials. Relative efficiency and privacy protection are studied in detail using Warner (1965) and Mangat (1994) models.  相似文献

In recent years randomized response methods have been introduced in an attempt to improve the accuracy and honesty in personalized response surveys of very sensitive questions. Two randomized response methods are compared, taking into account the protection afforded the respondent. In addition, we point out that the estimators, which previous authors have claimed to be the maximum likelihood estimators of the population proportion with the sensitive characteristic, are in fact not the maximum likelihood estimators.  相似文献
