Multiattribute Utility Theory (MAUT) is a normative theory of choice that facilitates the segmentation of complex decisions into value dimensions and alternative positions and guides the recombination of these values and alternatives into an overall judgement. MAUT has proven to be helpful in resolving difficult public policy problems under conditions of uncertain outcome. This paper examines the feasibility of applying the approach to the needs assessment and services priority setting activities of county-wide human services planning councils. MAUT was applied to the 1989–1991 cycle of the Essex County (Newark), New Jersey Comprehensive Human Services Plan with some success. The decision-making and information-filtering processes uncovered by the approach are discussed as are the questions about community planning which it raises.  相似文献

We apply a set of rules for theorizing developed to expand the rigorous methodology of quantitative research to Doug McAdam's Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency, 1930–1970 (1982). We contend that the strength and breadth of McAdam's data and his application of that data to refute extant theories combined with his new flexible—perhaps overly so—concepts allowed political process theory (PPT) to rise to prominence in the field. We find his book to be a good example of how a single-case study, despite its shortcomings, can play a crucial role in the development of theory and the emergence of influential research paradigms.  相似文献

Equivalence Scale Exactness (ESE) or Independence of Base (IB), a condition on household preferences and interpersonal comparisons, makes adult-equivalence scales independent of utility levels. ESE is characterized by Income-Ratio Comparability (IRC) which assumes that utility equality is preserved by income scaling. If ESE/IRC is a maintained hypothesis, equivalence scales can be estimated from behaviour alone if preferences are not piglog. This condition is not met by a family of translog expenditure functions or by the Almost Ideal Demand System. A translog expenditure function can be used for the reference household, however, together with an independent specification of the equivalence scale.Earlier versions of this paper [1987–1992] have been presented at Amsterdam, Augsburg, Barcelona, Bilbao, CORE, Essex, GREQE, Kiel, Leyden, Madrid, Southhampton, Toulouse, UBC, and Valencia. Urban open spaces are highly valued for their contribution to the quality of life in the cities [Tenkel (1963). Cities and space: The future use of urban land. Third world cities, for example, Chiang Mai (Thailand), are no exception with regard to the role of urban open space in achieving such a goal [Tantayanusorn (2003). Unpublished doctoral thesis. However, the provision of urban open space as a social public facility is coming low in priority in comparison to other market-demanded facilities in the form of roads, car parks, clean water, electricity and the like. Such a fact was corroborated by a study conceived by Thailand's Social Research Institute (1996) which reveals that 73% of Chiang Mai population wanted more public open space.This paper aims at exploring the revitalization of existing traditional open spaces (kuang)—which is usually categorized as ‘religious land’, hence it is a religious property—in Chiang Mai as an intermediate strategy in providing the much needed public open space. In doing so, the physical and cultural characteristics of kuang have to be elaborated, while at the same time the local aspirations on urban open space were canvassed. The combined analysis of those two inquiries resulted in a proposal of kuang wat—a variance of kuang—utilization as an agent of urban open space provision in the project of achieving quality of urban life in Thai city of Chiang Mai.  相似文献

A survey examined the influence of Argentine (Linepithema humile (Mayr)) and coastal brown ant (Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius)) populations on other ants in the Perth metropolitan area, Western Australia. Twelve gardens (yards) were sampled; four infested by Argentine ants, three infested by coastal brown ants, and five controls where these two tramp ants were absent or collected only as isolated strays. Collection methods used were pitfall trapping and hand collection. A total of 27 species was recorded. Eight of these species, including the above two tramp ants, are non-native to the region. Pheidole megacephala was the most abundant species, comprising 95.4% of ants in P. megacephala–infested gardens. Linepithema humile comprised 92.1% of ants in L. humile–infested gardens. Other common ants were the native Iridomyrmex chasei and the introduced species Tetramorium simillimum and Tetramorium bicarinatum. The cryptic introduced species Cardiocondyla nuda and Tetramorium simillimum appear able to persist in small numbers in L. humile–infested gardens, but virtually no other ant species occurred where the coastal brown ant was well established. Mean richness, diversity, and evenness were significantly different between P. megacephala–infested and control gardens, and significantly different between L. humile–infested and control gardens. Diversity and evenness, but not richness, were significantly different between P. megacephala–infested and L. humile–infested gardens. Ordination analysis revealed that the three types of gardens had very different ant community profiles.  相似文献

A vocational rehabilitation counselor (VRC) was placed in a methadone maintenance (MM) clinic (Clinic 1; N=333) to increase vocational–educational (v–e) services and improve v–e outcomes. Data on individual service delivery and monthly patient v–e status provided project implementation and outcome data, respectively, in Clinic 1; v–e status data for patients in a comparison clinic (Clinic 2; N=358) allowed assessment of the VRC's impact. V–e services increased significantly in Clinic 1; net v–e involvement increased from 53 to 56% in Clinic 1 and declined in Clinic 2, 45–43%. Logistic regression showed that pre-treatment/at admission employment heavily influenced positive v–e change and that VRC services contributed significantly to v–e change among patients not working at admission. It was concluded that placing a VRC in an MM clinic is a cost-effective v–e intervention.  相似文献

This article presents preliminary data on perceived culture shock (PCS), length of stay (LS), and depression in a sample of 29 Russian speaking elderly (age ranged 54 to 81, mean = 65.8). The average LS in the United States was 4 years, 8 months. Measurement of PCS was based on the number of irrational beliefs endorsed on the Perceived Culture Shock Inventory (PCSI) developed by the authors; level of depression was measured by Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI; Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock, & Erbaugh, 1961); self-esteem was measured by Culture-Free Self-Esteem Inventories—Second Edition (CFSEI-2; Battle, 1981). It was hypothesized that the LS would be negatively related to the level of depression, contingent upon the level of PCS. Path analysis was used to analyze the data. Results indicated that 38% of variance in level of depression was explained by combined effects of PCS (Beta = 0.597, p = 0.001) and LS (Beta = –0.063, p = 0.698). LS accounted for 2.6% of variance in self-esteem.  相似文献

Often, strategic communication tools like public relations and media diplomacy are used to enhance a nation's image (Giffard, A., & Rivenburgh, N. K. (2000). This was arguably the first time that allegations of product deficiencies were targeted at a country. Using the image repair theory, this paper examined the strategies used and the image these strategies generated for China. Findings showed that the initial defensive strategies generated an image of a hurried and harried country. After it was willing to confront the crises through corrective action, a surer and more determined image emerged.  相似文献

The homeless will readily list ailments they claim to have, yet they will also claim that such ailments are not a problem and do not warrant treatment. In an attempt to understand this apparentparadox, data from a sample of homeless individuals were re-analyzed from a social comparison perspective. It was hypothesized that increased entrenchment in homelessness (increased isolation from nonhomeless environments and further involvement in the homeless environment)—operationalized by longer time spent on the street and a greater number of street friends—would lead homeless individuals to alter their perceptions of what constitutes a problem worthy of treatment. Results supported this hypothesis, in direction, and in almost all tests conducted. The involvement of adaptation level theory in such a social comparison process and the implications for intervention and treatment are discussed.  相似文献

I thought it would be more glamorous: Preconceptions and misconceptions of public relations among students in the principles course. Public Relations Review, 29, 199–214] argued that public relations majors often do not realize what is involved in the academic discipline or the professional field. This research builds on the findings of those studies to ask: are public relations educators doing any better in communicating the core competencies, responsibilities, knowledge requirements, skills, and abilities of the discipline and the public relations major? Through the use of 10 focus groups across majors at a top research university, we can see that little is known about public relations among non-majors, but public relations majors can articulate the requirements and functions of the field. Several primary areas of confusion emerged about public relations related to: marketing or promotion, spinning the truth, image, and public relations as a career choice. These ideas show a critical lack of transparency in public relations. Credibility of the public relations function is hampered by this failure to communicate about the functions and core competencies of the field. Implications for both the public relations practice and for public relations education are discussed.  相似文献

This study analyzed 161 cited and 177 uncited articles published in Public Relations Review (1975–1993) to determine if three independent variables—research methods, type of statistics, and topics—influenced whether or not articles were cited in other research articles. Significant differences were found between quantitative and qualitative research methods ( = 3.20, = .002) and topics (χ2(3,1)) = 10.47, = .01), but not by type of statistics. Topics also differed by years with professional topics the most published category and technical topics the least published. The authors provide tables listing the most cited authors, their university affiliations, and the journals citing their articles.  相似文献

Hypotheses and assumptions on the intimacy regulating and the monitoring function of gaze were tested in three successive experiments. In a 2 (sex of the dyad) × 6 (order of the intimacy levels) × 3 (questions' intimacy level) factorial design 144 subjects were interviewed by a confederate who was either constantly looking into their eyes (experiment I), was constantly avoiding mutual gaze (experiment II) or showed varying looking behavior (experiment III). The data clearly revealed that the compensation hypothesis predicting an inverse relationship between gaze and topic intimacy has to be rejected. Intimacy regulation through gaze functions more via adaptation processes. Adaptation can also account for differences in gaze dependent upon the partner's looking behavior. The sequence hypothesis which predicted decreasing gaze with increasing predictability of the partner's behavior was confirmed.It follows from these data that looking behavior has an internal structure with information receiving (regarding the partner's attentiveness and the ease of monitoring the interaction, monitoring function) more important in an encounter than information sending (communicative function); and—at least in the type of situation chosen—reactions towards situational conditions are primarily performed via adaptation processes.This research was supported by a grant from the University of Bielefeld 86/2754.  相似文献

Public Relations Review, 28, 21–37] provided a strategic framework to facilitate relationships with publics though the World Wide Web. Based on a review of research exploring Web-based public relations practices drawing on Kent and Taylor's theoretical framework, this essay offers a ten-year reflective survey on past, current, and future directions of Kent and Taylor's Internet principles, as they relate to the dialogic theory of public relations.  相似文献

This paper provides a historical analysis of the changing significance of the most influential statement ever made on inequality and development—Simon Kuznets’s “inverted U-curve hypothesis.” The shifting interpretations and appropriations of the hypothesis over time—from its status as a speculative supposition in 1955, to its rise and fall as a reified socioeconomic law, to its contested standing in the social sciences today—demonstrate how Kuznets’s arguments, originally advanced under more limited conditions, became transformed into overarching theoretical, empirical, and political constructions. This history suggests that even empirically grounded and testable social science models are contingent on the broader social and political contexts in which they are produced and negotiated.  相似文献

I present the first longitudinal estimates of covered union member and covered nonmember wage differentials in Great Britain. Crosssectional estimates show that covered union members receive a premium of about 10 percent over other workers, but covered nonmembers have no significant wage differential. Longitudinal estimates that accounted for fixed effects, selectivity, and measurement error indicated that OLS estimates are downward biased. The “true” union wage differential is likely about 30–35 percent. There is a large negative selection effect to union membership. No robust estimate could be found for covered nonmembers. The aim of this article is to provide a public relations perspective on the civil religion phenomenon through a study of Barcelona Football Club (BFC) as an institution and its public relations efforts. We believe that BFC can be seen as a form of civil religion that uses a devotional–promotional communication model which sets forth, upholds and reinforces relations with “faithful supporters”. Duke University was thrust into a crisis situation when three members of its lacrosse team were indicted on charges of first-degree rape and sexual assault. As the story received extensive media coverage and while the prosecution and defense were making their legal arguments, the reputation of Duke University was called into question and it too was in need of appropriate public relations communication strategies. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the actions and public relations communication emanating from Duke in its attempt to frame the story and restore its reputation. There is a general consensus that homeownership has beneficial effects for both individuals and society in many outcomes. However, research regarding the effect of homeownership on individuals’ subjective well-being remains inconclusive. In this paper, for the first time, we provide empirical evidence for the link between homeownership and housing satisfaction using panel data. We use the eight waves of the European Community Household Panel (ECHP) covering the period 1994–2001. We observe that renters who become homeowners not only experience a significant increase in housing satisfaction, but also after changing their tenure status, they obtain a different utility from the same housing context. This evidence might provide support to the hypothesis that a share of the differences in the perceived utility derived from housing can be attributed to (un)fulfilled expectations or aspirations regarding homeownership.  相似文献

One of the stylized facts from the past 30 years has been the declining rate of first births before age 30 for all women and the increase rate of first births after age 30 among women with four-year college degrees (Steven P. Martin, Demography, 37(4), 523–533, 2000). What are some of the factors behind womens decision to postpone their childbearing? We hypothesize that the wage difference often observed between like-educated mothers and non-mothers (Jane Waldfogel, Journal of Labor Economics, 16, 505–545, 1998a; Journal of Economic Perspectives 12(1) 137–156, 1998b) may be affected by the postponement of childbearing until after careers are fully established. Hence, we focus on college-educated women because they are typically more career-oriented than their non-college educated counterparts and also the group most often observed postponing maternity. We use individual-level data on women from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79) in order to control for individual-level unobserved heterogeneity as well as human capital characteristics, such as actual work experience, in our empirical analysis. We estimate wage equations, first producing base-line results to compare to the existing literature. Then, we expand the basic wage equation model to address fundamental econometric issues and the education/fertility issue at hand. Our empirical findings are two-fold. First, we find that college-educated mothers do not experience a motherhood wage penalty at all. In fact, they enjoy a wage boost when compared to college-educated childless women. Second, fertility delay enhances this wage boost even further. Our results provide an explanation for the observed postponement of maternity for educated women. We argue that the wage boost experienced by college-educated mothers may be the result of their search for family–friendly work environments, which, in turn, yields job matches with more female-friendly firms offering greater opportunities for advancement.JEL Codes: J13 and J3  相似文献

Recently, the theory of informational cascades has been tested in an experiment by L. Anderson and Ch. Holt (American Economic Review, 87 (1997) 847–862) who report that their data support the theory amazingly well. In this paper we report on an experiment designed to find out whether observed cascades are indeed due to rational Bayesian updating. However, we find little support for rational updating. The simple heuristic “follow your own signal” does much better in explaining our data than Bayesian rationality.  相似文献
