This paper offers data from the inpatient treatment of four psychotic adolescents in a clinic in Tubingen, in the Federal Republic of Germany. The author describes crucial episodes in therapy of each, and includes his own physical sensations and reactions, his dreams, and the thinking and feeling that determined his responses to these young patients. This way of working is a non-medical form of psychoanalysis.  相似文献

While the field of social work is heavily committed to the treatment of children and adolescents with behavior problems, it has given little attention to the application of Piaget's egocentrism theory to these problems. This paper outlines the theory proposed by Piaget and reviews subsequent empirical validation and clinical applications of his theory. The role of social work in developing more sophisticated applications of Piaget's theory is discussed.  相似文献

The establishment of an accurate psychosocial assessment is important in clinical social work with all adolescents. With those who are physically ill the complexities imposed by the illness make it essential to take into account the predictable physical and emotional effects of the illness or disability as well as the developmental tasks, the apparent adequacy and flexibility of the defenses and coping capacities and the availability of personal, cultural and institutional resources. A framework for assessment is proposed which examines these variables and their dynamic relationships.  相似文献

Educators recognize that social, personal, and environmental conditions can interfere with childrens' learning. As a result, educational reforms have emphasized family support services and the provision of social and related services at or near the school. However, the entry of agency based social workers into the school has not sufficiently taken into account the role of pupil personnel staff, including school social workers. Findings from a state study that examined the population served and services provided by school social workers are discussed in light of the implications they have for collaboration between school and agency social workers working within the school.  相似文献

Drawing on a critical synthesis of the two main citizenship traditions, so as to construct citizenship as both a status and a practice, linked through the notion of human agency, the article explores citizenship's exclusionary and inclusionary sides within both a national and international framework. Within a national framework, the implications of citizenship's ‘false universalism’ are explored as the basis for a recasting of citizenship in a way that addresses the tension between universalism and particularity or difference. Within an international framework, a human rights perspective is introduced as a means of challenging citizenship's exclusion of nation state outsiders, most notably immigrants and asylum-seekers. This approach draws upon a multi-tiered conceptualisation of citizenship stretching from the local through to the global.

Some implications for social work practice and policy are then discussed in relation to support for active citizenship in deprived communities and anti-poverty action in which poor people themselves have a voice. This includes a brief consideration of political exclusion; the potential of self-help groups and community social work and development work; and user-involvement. The article concludes that citizenship offers social work a framework that embraces anti-poverty work, principles of partnership and anti-discriminatory practice and an inclusionary stance.  相似文献

This paper presents a critical review of globalization as explicated in the social work literature. It argues that writers about globalization and social work have so far accepted an unprolematized and undifferentiated construction of the theory of globalization which does not engage with the significant differences that exist between different accounts of globalization. In doing so they implicitly reproduce neo-liberal assumptions about the role of the state and its relationship to global forces. This results in a reductionist and pessimistic analysis of the fragmentation and deprofessionalization of welfare and social work which is often at variance with empirical evidence. Specifically, the acceptance of a narrow and economically over-deterministic reading of globalization unwittingly depoliticizes debates about social work and undermines resistance to the challenges to welfare.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the challenges to social work evolving from two major discourses contributing to the common sense contextualising social work within the new spirit of capitalism and the governing of the soul. Beside neo-liberal ideas and values challenging social work values and the welfare state, the question is also about managerialism. To what extent is the social worker able to contribute to liberating, reflexive critique, or exert pastoral power? I have chosen to see how the idea of the social investment state may be linked to Rose’s and Foucault’s ideas about expanding governmentality and end my discussion by relating to some of the early writing on social work’s challenges in confronting ideas and practices interpreted as neoliberalisation moves.  相似文献

The social work profession has not yet taken a leadership role in addressing the myriad of challenges that individuals on the autism spectrum encounter across the lifespan. In this essay, we argue that social workers are well equipped to engage in research and practice aimed at promoting full and meaningful inclusion in society, as well as social and economic justice, for individuals on the autism spectrum. We highlight short- and long-term goals that provide the social work profession with a framework to engage in research, practice, education, and advocacy aimed at supporting individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.  相似文献

This paper argues that the identity of social work as a form of professional practice within Europe is a timely matter for contemporary debate. Economic and political moves in Europe towards integration have created the possibility of establishing an identity which could both incorporate a range of diverse activities and also create a form of practice that is distinct. This article will address the emerging concept of social exclusion as a potential focus for social work professional practice in a changing global setting. It will be argued that the concept is one that can incorporate the broad range of practice in social work in a manner that could have similar meaning for all the different practitioners involved.  相似文献

This project focuses on children growing up in impoverished life circumstances, originating from an increasing level of poverty in Germany. There are two perspectives in social work research on children living in poverty: first, current research on childhood recognises that children are social agents in their own practices of life; second, research on poverty draws attention to the issue of social inequality, and broaches the question of the structural constraints and limitations of daily life. We report on current German research on children living in poverty, and focus on the role of peer relationships in coping with discrimination. This research is substantiated with the results of our own research project. We find that children develop strategies to mitigate the effects of poverty. The family can also help by providing the child with an interpretation of their poverty, and through daily coping mechanisms. Additionally, children can gain support from their peers. However, bridging social capital and gaining access to other social milieus is seldom successful. We conclude with a discussion of strategies that point the way out of child poverty. Such an optimistic goal, however, would require an alliance of practice, research and policy in the field of social work.  相似文献

The last 10 years have witnessed an increasing interest in evidence-based practice in the field of medicine. The product of a time characterised by the explosion of information technology, a heightened sense of risk, and the enshrining of the principles of economy, effectiveness, transparency and consumerism, evidence-based practice has rapidly expanded from medicine to other fields, including social work. The new paradigm has generated not only great enthusiasm in many areas of the social work profession but also an intense debate about the transferability of the principles of evidence-based practice from medicine to a discipline that operates amidst particularly complex and multifaceted societal factors. Similarly, the concept of evidence upon which social work practice should be based has been the object of considerable discussion, though initial emphasis on results from randomised controlled trials seems to be gradually shifting towards broader approaches to defining evidence. Although organisational constraints and job pressures are likely to favour the use, among practitioners, of ‘preappraised’ resources, this should not prevent social workers from acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to make independent and critical appraisal of evidence.  相似文献

In this paper we will be examining the way in which the education social work service goes about its routine, everyday work with truants (which, for the purposes of this paper, will be seen as the service's major occupational task to resolve).1 Such an analysis has, in our view, a twofold importance. Firstly, it adds to the extensive literature2 on disaffection amongst school students; secondly, it contributes to juvenile justice studies3 which have highlighted the importance attached to truancy in the formal decision-making process; this in turn has led to the development of a range of administrative and judicial strategies to remedy the problem4. In addition, it is our view that the truancy problem is likely to increase in the light of the growing certainty of unemployment on leaving school for large sections of the youth population, coupled with fiscal cuts in the education budget: we have been able to show in our Sheffield-based research (which confirms trends indicated in earlier studies undertaken in this same city5 that there has been a statistically significant increase in non-attendance amongst fifth formers between 1976 and 1982 in the local comprehensive schools.6 The truancy issue has been perceived as a serious social problem for a number of years now7 and, on the same basis, we can expect that this will continue – indeed, as something of the moral panic that exists in the related social sphere of youth unemployment.8 Perhaps this is one of the reasons for the reference to the role of the service in the 1983 Conservative party manifesto:9‘we shall switch the emphasis in the education welfare service back to school attendance so as to reduce truancy'.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Dalai Lama’s claim to be a Marxist deserves consideration, if not scrutiny, through a review of core Buddhist tenets and basic Marxist concepts. To that end, this paper seeks to achieve three aims: first, to confirm if one can reasonably agree that the Dalai Lama is a Marxist; second, to explore whether a vision of social justice can emerge from a dialog between Marxist politics and Buddhist spirituality; and third, to discuss some implications for social work practice toward social change.  相似文献

This article examines the applicability of D. W. Winnicott's theoretical concepts to clinical social work practice with clients whose psychosocial well-being has been compromised by environmental deprivation and related developmental vulnerabilities. This examination is organized around three questions: (1) Why is Winnicott relevant for social work? (2) Which of his concepts are most useful for social workers? (3) How can these concepts be put into practice with social work problems and populations? The translation of theory to practice is illustrated with case material.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Increasing globalisation, reorganisation of the Scandinavian welfare regimes and the awareness of increasing global roots of local social problems necessitated change in the curriculum of social work in three Scandinavian schools of social work in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Recent global transformations, increasing global inequalities, increasing forced migration and the emergence of glocal social problems make the traditional education and methods of social work ineffective and in some cases harmful for people in need of social work intervention. This article examines the need to provide critical, global and multilevel perspectives in social work education in order to prepare social work students for the increasing social problems with global roots. The article, which is based on cross-national collaborations in social work education between three Scandinavian countries, addresses global and critical components in theoretical courses, professional training and field practice in the social work education of the countries in question. It is argued that social work education should move beyond the old division of classical and international/intercultural toward including global and critical perspectives in an integrative manner in all programs.  相似文献
