2011 Association of College and Research Libraries Conference

Abstract

The 2011 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) conference theme, “A Declaration of Interdependence,” linked the conference to its physical location, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The all-conference reception on Friday night in the six-year-old National Constitution Center expressed the theme perfectly. Held biennially, the 2011 ACRL conference attracted its highest attendance ever: over 5,000 attendees (some virtual), vendors, speakers and guests. Attendee demographics were decidedly younger than those seen at recent general American Library Association (ALA) conferences.     

2011 Special Libraries Association Conference

The 2011 Special Libraries Association Annual Conference took place June 12–15 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The conference's theme was “Future Ready,” and it featured a diverse array of programming for information professionals. Following are summaries from four of the conference sessions.

This quarter's column features a report from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Conference, held April 10–13, in Indianapolis, IN, and a workshop titled, “Developing Issues in Licensing: Text Mining, MOOCs, and More,” which was co-sponsored by the Collection Development and Electronic Resources Management Interest Groups of the Association of College and Research Libraries New England Chapter (ACRL/NEC), an independent chapter of ACRL, and which took place April 25, 2013 at Northeastern University in Boston, MA.     

New England Technical Services Librarians Spring 2011 Conference: 2020 Vision: A New Decade for Technical Services

This report discusses the program of the 2011 New England Technical Services Librarians (NETSL) annual spring conference, held on Friday, April 8 at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and entitled “2020 Vision: A New Decade for Technical Services.” NETSL is a section of the New England Library Association and a regional group of the American Library Association.

This quarter's column features reports from the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians annual conference, held May 15–17, 2011, wherein linked data and the Semantic Web were discussed, in addition to satisfying niche needs in cataloging and acquisitions among other topics; the MOBIUS Conference, held June 7–9, 2011, which featured talks on the proper application of Web 2.0 technologies, staff cross-training, and the use of Adobe Captivate to create video tutorials; and, the Special Libraries Association annual conference, held June 12–15, 2011, featuring content aggregation and disaggregation, an overview of RDA, and a broad discussion of standards for technical services, to name a few.

This quarter's column features a report from the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Conference, held March 25–28, 2015, in Portland, OR; a couple of reports from the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians (OVGTSL) Conference, held May 18–20 in Terre Haute, IN; one report from NASIG, held May 27–30 in Washington, DC; and several reports from the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference, held June 25–30 in San Francisco, CA. Topics discussed range from scholarly publishing, copyright and authors’ rights—including as they relate to zines—privacy and analytics, and linked data.

Abstract

The 2011 American Library Association conference took place June 23–28 at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. This report summarizes several programs and forums including the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) Continuing Resources Section, Electronic Resources Interest Group program; Holdings Forum: Universal and Repurposed Holdings Information: Emerging Initiatives and Projects; the RDA Update Forum; and the Continuing Resources Cataloging Committee Update Forum.

Abstract

The Big Tent for Statistics: Mentoring Required

Research supports the positive impact of mentoring on both job and career satisfaction. Recognizing this, the American Statistical Association (ASA) has started a new mission-centered focus on mentoring. This article describes the development and implementation of meeting-based mentoring programs at four ASA conferences in 2014 and 2015. We present results of the feedback evaluations from program participants and use them to motivate recommendations for creating and running conference mentoring programs and overcoming common challenges. These recommendations are applicable to creating and running conference mentoring programs in any field. We conclude with a discussion of the opportunities for the ASA to augment its mentoring programs in support of the professional development of its members.

Abstract

This column includes reports on sessions from the American Library Association Midwinter Conference 2019, with a report on how libraries can be part of a shared community with developers and users through the use of future of libraries, is open (FOLIO) library services platform and a report reflecting on future technological developments. Additionally, conference reports from the 14th Annual Electronic Resources & Libraries Conference, which includes reports on implementing troubleshooting training programs for public services staff and using budget cuts as an opportunity to generate goodwill. The remaining reports are from American Library Association Annual Conference 2019, which includes a report about the parallels between managing campaigns and managing an integrated library system (ILS) migration, how to improve a collection development plan with resources about Cheyenne and Arapaho people, and an exploration of the challenges of hosting student and faculty journals.

2011 MOBIUS Conference

The twelfth annual MOBIUS Conference was held June 7–9, 2011, at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri. The MOBIUS consortium of Missouri is currently composed of fifty-nine academic libraries, two public libraries, and the Missouri State Library. The conference offered various opportunities, including a keynote address by Meredith Farkas and a networking dessert session on the first night. The second day featured six concurrent sessions, each having six different presentations, along with delicious food, generous door prizes, and the chance to meet with vendors. The third day consisted of four different four-hour post-conference training sessions. Presentations are available for download from the conference Web site.¹

The annual meeting of the Kansas Library Association (KLA) was held April 6–8, 2011, in Topeka, KS, giving a brief respite and spring rejuvenation to academic and public librarians in the state.
