On Francis Galton's Difference Problem

Francis Galton proposed to split the money available for the first two prizes in a competition according to some ratio X, depending on the marks of the three best competitors, but invariant under change of location or scale of the marks. Assuming normality, Galton found that EX is about .75 and empirically he observed that X is nearly uniformly distributed between and 1. Our main purpose is to show that Galton was indeed right for a wide class of underlying distributions. As the number of competitors tends to ∞, the ratio X tends (in distribution) to a uniform random variable.

A discrete uniform distribution is defined over the integers 1, 2, …, k. Following Tenenbein, who investigated the point estimation of k for a sample drawn without replacement, this paper considers a number of point estimators of k for sampling with replacement and presents conservative confidence sets for k for both methods of sampling.

A genealogy of Florence Nightingale, Charles Darwin, Francis Galton and Francis Ysidro Edgeworth with special reference to their Italian connections and an annexe on Beatrice Webb and Charles Booth

In this article we show that several leading natural scientists, statisticians and social scientists born between 1730 and 1930 are closely related by marriage, thereby forming what Annan (Studies in social history: a tribute to C. M. Trevelyan, Longmans, Green, London, pp 241–287, 1955) has named an Intellectual Aristocracy. We also establish that the first three individuals mentioned in our title had family connections with Italy.
