The two-sample problem and its extension to the k-sample problem are well known in the statistical literature. However, the discrete version of the k-sample problem is relatively less explored. Here in this work we suggest a k-sample non-parametric test procedure for discrete distributions based on mutual information. A detailed power study with comparison with other alternatives is provided. Finally, a comparison of some English soccer league teams based on their goal-scoring pattern is discussed.  相似文献

A test based on Tiku's MML (modified maximum likelihood) estimators is developed for testing that the population correlation coefficient is zero. The resistance of tests to acceptance and rejection of null hypotheses was denned and studied by Ylvisaker in the context of one-sample problems. This notion provides a measure of a test's resistance to outliers. In this paper, we propose an extension of this notion to rank-based tests of independence for bivariate random variables. We show, among other things, that Kendall's test of independence is more resistant than Spearman's test.  相似文献

The balanced iterative reducing and clustering hierarchies (BIRCH) algorithm handles massive datasets by reading the data file only once, clustering the data as it is read, and retaining only a few clustering features to summarize the data read so far. Using BIRCH allows to analyse datasets that are too large to fit in the computer main memory. We propose estimates of Spearman's ρ and Kendall's τ that are calculated from a BIRCH output and assess their performance through Monte Carlo studies. The numerical results show that the BIRCH-based estimates can achieve the same efficiency as the usual estimates of ρ and τ while using only a fraction of the memory otherwise required.  相似文献

An omnibus test of uniformity based upon the ratios of sample moments and population moments is introduced. Results of a monte carlo power study show that for two types of alternatives considered, the proposed test has good power in comparison with Neyman's test N 2Greenwood's test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and Chi-squared test.  相似文献

This study examines extensions of McNemar's Test with multinomial responses, and proposes a linear weighting scheme, based on the distance of the response change, that is applied to one of these extensions (Bowker's test). This weighted version of Bowker's test is then appropriate for ordinal response variables. A Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to examine the Type I error rate of the weighted Bowker's test for a cross-classification table based on a five-category ordinal response scale. The weighted Bowker's test was also applied to a data set involving change in student attitudes towards mathematics. The results of the weighted Bowker's test were compared with the results of Bowker's test applied to the same set of data.  相似文献

Mood's test, which is a relatively old test (and the oldest non‐parametric test among those tests in its class) for determining heterogeneity of variance, is still being widely used in different areas such as biometry, biostatistics and medicine. Although it is a popular test, it is not suitable for use on a two‐way factorial design. In this paper, Mood's test is generalised to the 2 × 2 factorial design setting and its performance is compared with that of Klotz's test. The power and robustness of these tests are examined in detail by means of a simulation study with 10,000 replications. Based on the simulation results, the generalised Mood's and Klotz's tests can especially be recommended in settings in which the parent distribution is symmetric. As an example application we analyse data from a multi‐factor agricultural system that involves chilli peppers, nematodes and yellow nutsedge. This example dataset suggests that the performance of the generalised Mood test is in agreement with that of the generalised Klotz's test.  相似文献

Measurement of the effect of extreme observations on test statistics has been discussed by many authors. Test resistance to rejection (acceptance) is one of the most appealing methods. Using the distribution of the test statistic, the exact and asymptotic distributions of the test resistance to rejection (acceptance) are introduced. Under proper conditions, two independent tests of the null hypothesis of homogeneity of means are provided by a set of sample averages. One test, with tail probability P 1, relates to the variation between the sample averages, while the other, with tail probability P 2, relates to the concordance of the rankings of the sample averages with the anticipated rankings under an alternative hypothesis. The quantity G = P 1 P 2 is considered as the combined test statistic and, except for the discreteness in the null distribution of P 2, would correspond to the Fisher statistic for combining probabilities. Illustration is made, for the case of four means, on how to get critical values of G or critical values of P 1 for each possible value of P 2, taking discreteness into account. Alternative measures of concordance considered are Spearman's ρ and Kendall's τ. The concept results, in the case of two averages, in assigning two-thirds of the test size to the concordant tail, one-third to the discordant tail.  相似文献

Pearson's partial correlation, Kendall's partial tau, and a partial correlation based on Spearman's rho need not be consistent estimators of zero under conditional independence. The ranges of possible limiting values of these correlations are computed under multivariate normality and lognormality. The authors present a new nonparametric approach to test for interaction in two‐way layouts. Based on the concept of composite linear rank statistics, they combine the correlated row and column ranking information to construct the test statistic. They determine the limiting distributions of the proposed test statistic under the null hypothesis and Pitman alternatives. They also propose consistent estimators for the limiting covariance matrices associated with the test. A two sample test of likelihood ratio type is proposed, assuming normal distribution theory, for testing the hypothesis that two samples come from identical normal populations versus the alternative that the populations are normal but vary in mean value and variance with one population having a smaller mean and smaller variance than the other. The small sample and large sample distribution of the proposed statistic are derived assuming normality. Some computations are presented which show the speed of convergence of small sample critical values to their asymptotic counterparts. Comparisons of local power of the proposed test are made with several potential competing tests. Asymptotics for the test statistic are derived when underlying distributions are not necessarily normal.  相似文献

In this note we propose two procedures for testing homogeneity of co-variance matrices that are both extensions of Hartley's (1940) test for equality of variances. The first is a two-stage procedure where the first step is a simple test for equality of the largest eigenvalues, and corresponding eigenvectors, of the covariance matrices. For data subject to right censoring it is suggested that the Wilcoxon ranking procedure can be generalized by scoring observations according to the expected values of order statistics from the uniform distribution subject to the same right censoring. This parallels the logrank scoring procedure in which scores correspond to the expected values of order statistics from the exponential distribution that have been subject to right censoring. A caveat is given that, in situations where the mechanism of censoring has been affected by treatment, the usual permutational analysis of ranking scores would be inappropriate.
