A Bayesian analysis is provided for the Wilcoxon signed-rank statistic (T+). The Bayesian analysis is based on a sign-bias parameter φ on the (0, 1) interval. For the case of a uniform prior probability distribution for φ and for small sample sizes (i.e., 6 ? n ? 25), values for the statistic T+ are computed that enable probabilistic statements about φ. For larger sample sizes, approximations are provided for the asymptotic likelihood function P(T+|φ) as well as for the posterior distribution P(φ|T+). Power analyses are examined both for properly specified Gaussian sampling and for misspecified non Gaussian models. The new Bayesian metric has high power efficiency in the range of 0.9–1 relative to a standard t test when there is Gaussian sampling. But if the sampling is from an unknown and misspecified distribution, then the new statistic still has high power; in some cases, the power can be higher than the t test (especially for probability mixtures and heavy-tailed distributions). The new Bayesian analysis is thus a useful and robust method for applications where the usual parametric assumptions are questionable. These properties further enable a way to do a generic Bayesian analysis for many non Gaussian distributions that currently lack a formal Bayesian model.  相似文献

A great deal of inference in statistics is based on making the approximation that a statistic is normally distributed. The error in doing so is generally O(n?1/2), where n is the sample size and can be considered when the distribution of the statistic is heavily biased or skewed. This note shows how one may reduce the error to O(n?(j+1)/2), where j is a given integer. The case considered is when the statistic is the mean of the sample values of a continuous distribution with a scale or location change after the sample has undergone an initial transformation, which may depend on an unknown parameter. The transformation corresponding to Fisher's score function yields an asymptotically efficient procedure.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a nonparametric method based on jackknife empirical likelihood ratio to test the equality of two variances. The asymptotic distribution of the test statistic has been shown to follow χ2 distribution with the degree of freedom 1. Simulations have been conducted to show the type I error and the power compared to Levene's test and F test under different distribution settings. The proposed method has been applied to a real data set to illustrate the testing procedure.  相似文献

This paper contains an application of the asymptotic expansion of a pFp() function to a problem encountered in econometrics. In particular we consider an approximation of the distribution function of the limited information maximum likelihood (LIML) identifiability test statistic using the method of moments. An expression for the Sth order asymptotic approximation of the moments of the LIML identifiability test statistic is derived and tabulated. The exact distribution function of the test statistic is approximated by a member of the class of F (variance ratio) distribution functions having the same first two integer moments. Some tabulations of the approximating distribution function are included.  相似文献

This article studies a new procedure to test for the equality of k regression curves in a fully non‐parametric context. The test is based on the comparison of empirical estimators of the characteristic functions of the regression residuals in each population. The asymptotic behaviour of the test statistic is studied in detail. It is shown that under the null hypothesis, the distribution of the test statistic converges to a finite combination of independent chi‐squared random variables with one degree of freedom. The coefficients in this linear combination can be consistently estimated. The proposed test is able to detect contiguous alternatives converging to the null at the rate n ? 1 ∕ 2. The practical performance of the test based on the asymptotic null distribution is investigated by means of simulations.  相似文献

We present results that extend an existing test of equality of correlation matrices. A new test statistic is proposed and is shown to be asymptotically distributed as a linear combination of independent x 2 random variables. This new formulation allows us to find the power of the existing test and our extensions by deriving the distribution under the alternative using a linear combination of independent non-central x 2 random variables. We also investigate the null and the alternative distribution of two related statistics. The first one is a quadratic form in deviations from a control group with which the remaining k-1 groups are to be compared. The second test is designed for comparing adjacent groups. Several approximations for the null and the alternative distribution are considered and two illustrative examples are provided.  相似文献

Abstract

In a 2-step monotone missing dataset drawn from a multivariate normal population, T2-type test statistic (similar to Hotelling’s T2 test statistic) and likelihood ratio (LR) are often used for the test for a mean vector. In complete data, Hotelling’s T2 test and LR test are equivalent, however T2-type test and LR test are not equivalent in the 2-step monotone missing dataset. Then we interest which statistic is reasonable with relation to power. In this paper, we derive asymptotic power function of both statistics under a local alternative and obtain an explicit form for difference in asymptotic power function. Furthermore, under several parameter settings, we compare LR and T2-type test numerically by using difference in empirical power and in asymptotic power function. Summarizing obtained results, we recommend applying LR test for testing a mean vector.  相似文献

A new method is described for robust analysis of variance in the balanced fixed effects case. The method uses the empirical characteristic function of the treatment samples, and has an interpretation in terms of S-estimators. The test statistic, under the null hypothesis, asymptotically follows a central chi-square distribution, and under contiguous alternatives a noncentral chi-square distribution. A Monte Carlo study suggests that, for finite samples, this is reasonably well approximated by the usual F distribution used in analysis of variance. The test statistic has a bounded influence function. The new procedure competes well with Huber's and a Wald-type procedure except in very heavy-tailed cases.  相似文献

For testing the fit of the inverse Gaussian distribution with unknown parameters, the empirical distribution-function statistic A2 is studied. Two procedures are followed in constructing the test statistic; they yield the same asymptotic distribution. In the first procedure the parameters in the distribution function are directly estimated, and in the second the distribution function is estimated by its Rao-Blackwell distribution estimator. A table is given for the asymptotic critical points of A2. These are shown to depend only on the ratio of the unknown parameters. An analysis is provided of the effect of estimating the ratio to enter the table for A2. This analysis enables the proposal of the complete operating procedure, which is sustained by a Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

Because of its simplicity, the Q statistic is frequently used to test the heterogeneity of the estimated intervention effect in meta-analyses of individually randomized trials. However, it is inappropriate to apply it directly to the meta-analyses of cluster randomized trials without taking clustering effects into account. We consider the properties of the adjusted Q statistic for testing heterogeneity in the meta-analyses of cluster randomized trials with binary outcomes. We also derive an analytic expression for the power of this statistic to detect heterogeneity in meta-analyses, which can be useful when planning a meta-analysis. A simulation study is used to assess the performance of the adjusted Q statistic, in terms of its Type I error rate and power. The simulation results are compared to that obtained from the proposed formula. It is found that the adjusted Q statistic has a Type I error rate close to the nominal level of 5%, as compared to the unadjusted Q statistic commonly used to test for heterogeneity in the meta-analyses of individually randomized trials with an inflated Type I error rate. Data from a meta-analysis of four cluster randomized trials are used to illustrate the procedures.  相似文献

A power study suggests that a good test of fit analysis for the binomial distribution is provided by a data-dependent Chernoff–Lehmann X 2 test with class expectations greater than unity, and its components. These data-dependent statistics involve arithmetically simple parameter estimation, convenient approximate distributions and provide a comprehensive assessment of how well the data agree with a binomial distribution. We suggest that a well-performed single test of fit statistic is the Anderson–Darling statistic.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider testing the equality of two mean vectors with unequal covariance matrices. In the case of equal covariance matrices, we can use Hotelling’s T2 statistic, which follows the F distribution under the null hypothesis. Meanwhile, in the case of unequal covariance matrices, the T2 type test statistic does not follow the F distribution, and it is also difficult to derive the exact distribution. In this paper, we propose an approximate solution to the problem by adjusting the degrees of freedom of the F distribution. Asymptotic expansions up to the term of order N? 2 for the first and second moments of the U statistic are given, where N is the total sample size minus two. A new approximate degrees of freedom and its bias correction are obtained. Finally, numerical comparison is presented by a Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

The Bartlett's test (1937) for equality of variances is based on the χ2 distribution approximation. This approximation deteriorates either when the sample size is small (particularly < 4) or when the population number is large. According to a simulation investigation, we find a similar varying trend for the mean differences between empirical distributions of Bartlett's statistics and their χ2 approximations. By using the mean differences to represent the distribution departures, a simple adjustment approach on the Bartlett's statistic is proposed on the basis of equal mean principle. The performance before and after adjustment is extensively investigated under equal and unequal sample sizes, with number of populations varying from 3 to 100. Compared with the traditional Bartlett's statistic, the adjusted statistic is distributed more closely to χ2 distribution, for homogeneity samples from normal populations. The type I error is well controlled and the power is a little higher after adjustment. In conclusion, the adjustment has good control on the type I error and higher power, and thus is recommended for small samples and large population number when underlying distribution is normal.  相似文献

Collings and Margolin(1985) developed a locally most powerful unbiased test for detecting negative binomial departures from a Poisson model, when the variance is a quadratic function of the mean. Kim and Park(1992) developed a locally most powerful unbiased test, when the variance is a linear function of the mean. It is found that a different mean-variance structure of a negative binomial derives a different locally optimal test statistic.

In this paper Collings and Margolin's and Kim and Park's results are unified and extended by developing a test for overdispersion in Poisson model against Katz family of distributions, Our setup has two extensions: First, Katz family of distributions is employed as an extension of the negative binomial distribution. Second, the mean-variance structure of the mixed Poisson model is given by σ2 = μ+cμr for arbitrary but fixed r. We derive a local score test for testing H0 : c = 0. Superiority of a new test is proved by the asymtotic relative efficiency as well as the simulation study.  相似文献

Using the empirical characteristic function, we derive a Cramér-von Mises test for symmetry of the error distribution in a class of nonlinear parametric heteroscedastic models. We study the convergence of the residual-based empirical distribution function. We establish a functional limit theorem for an empirical process of residuals, and investigate the asymptotic null distribution function of our test statistic. A simulation experiment is conducted to evaluate small-sample performances of our test.  相似文献

The importance of the normal distribution for fitting continuous data is well known. However, in many practical situations data distribution departs from normality. For example, the sample skewness and the sample kurtosis are far away from 0 and 3, respectively, which are nice properties of normal distributions. So, it is important to have formal tests of normality against any alternative. D'Agostino et al. [A suggestion for using powerful and informative tests of normality, Am. Statist. 44 (1990), pp. 316–321] review four procedures Z 2(g 1), Z 2(g 2), D and K 2 for testing departure from normality. The first two of these procedures are tests of normality against departure due to skewness and kurtosis, respectively. The other two tests are omnibus tests. An alternative to the normal distribution is a class of skew-normal distributions (see [A. Azzalini, A class of distributions which includes the normal ones, Scand. J. Statist. 12 (1985), pp. 171–178]). In this paper, we obtain a score test (W) and a likelihood ratio test (LR) of goodness of fit of the normal regression model against the skew-normal family of regression models. It turns out that the score test is based on the sample skewness and is of very simple form. The performance of these six procedures, in terms of size and power, are compared using simulations. The level properties of the three statistics LR, W and Z 2(g 1) are similar and close to the nominal level for moderate to large sample sizes. Also, their power properties are similar for small departure from normality due to skewness (γ1≤0.4). Of these, the score test statistic has a very simple form and computationally much simpler than the other two statistics. The LR statistic, in general, has highest power, although it is computationally much complex as it requires estimates of the parameters under the normal model as well as those under the skew-normal model. So, the score test may be used to test for normality against small departure from normality due to skewness. Otherwise, the likelihood ratio statistic LR should be used as it detects general departure from normality (due to both skewness and kurtosis) with, in general, largest power.  相似文献

The nonparametric component in a partially linear model is estimated by a linear combination of fixed-knot cubic B-splines with a second-order difference penalty on the adjacent B-spline coefficients. The resulting penalized least-squares estimator is used to construct two Wald-type spline-based test statistics for the null hypothesis of the linearity of the nonparametric function. When the number of knots is fixed, the first test statistic asymptotically has the distribution of a linear combination of independent chi-squared random variables, each with one degree of freedom, under the null hypothesis. The smoothing parameter is determined by specifying a value for the asymptotically expected value of the test statistic under the null hypothesis. When the number of knots is fixed and under the null hypothesis, the second test statistic asymptotically has a chi-squared distribution with K=q+2 degrees of freedom, where q is the number of knots used for estimation. The power performances of the two proposed tests are investigated via simulation experiments, and the practicality of the proposed methodology is illustrated using a real-life data set.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a general kth correlation coefficient between the density function and distribution function of a continuous variable as a measure of symmetry and asymmetry. We first propose a root-n moment-based estimator of the kth correlation coefficient and present its asymptotic results. Next, we consider statistical inference of the kth correlation coefficient by using the empirical likelihood (EL) method. The EL statistic is shown to be asymptotically a standard chi-squared distribution. Last, we propose a residual-based estimator of the kth correlation coefficient for a parametric regression model to test whether the density function of the true model error is symmetric or not. We present the asymptotic results of the residual-based kth correlation coefficient estimator and also construct its EL-based confidence intervals. Simulation studies are conducted to examine the performance of the proposed estimators, and we also use our proposed estimators to analyze the air quality dataset.  相似文献
