In this paper we establish the form of the optimal paired comparison design when there are k attributes, each with two levels, for testing for main effects, for main effects and two factor interactions and for main effects and two and three factor interactions. In all cases we assume that all pairs with the same number of attributes different appear equally often. In this setting the D and A optimal designs for main effects are the foldover pairs and those for main effects and two factor interactions have pairs in which about half the attributes are different.  相似文献

A new general class of m-class cyclic association scheme is defined for v treatments, where v is a composite number. A simple method of construction of PBIB designs having this association scheme using more than one initial block and some methods using only one initial block are proposed. A complete analysis of this type of PBIB designs is given. Also given is a list of 39 useful PBIB designs of this type having v≤15 and r≤10 and having only three associate classes together with their efficiency factors for all types of comparisons and over all efficiency factors.  相似文献

For ethical reasons it is important to try to obtain as much useful information as possible from an animal experiment whilst minimizing the number of animals used. Crossover designs, where applicable, provide an ideal framework for achieving this. If two or more treatment factors are included in the crossover design then the reduction in total animal usage can be considerable. In this paper we consider such designs, defined as multi-factor crossover designs. The designs are applicable when there are several different treatment factors, each at t levels, to be applied to the experimental units. The motivation for investigating these designs was a study conducted at GlaxoSmithKline to determine the preference of male and female dogs for t=5 different types of bed and t=5 different bedding conditions. A construction method is given for forming universally optimal designs for t not too large. Also given is an example for the special case where the number of treatment levels t=6.  相似文献

In this article, we present a study carried out to compare the effectiveness of the normal probability plot (NPP) and a simple dot plot in assessing the significance of the effects in experimental designs with factors at two levels (2 k?p designs). Several groups of students who had just completed a course that covered factorial designs were asked to identify the significant effects in a total of 32 situations, 16 of which were represented using NPPs and the other 16 using dot plots. Although the 32 scenarios were said to be different, there were really only 16 different situations, each of which was represented using the two methods to be compared. A simple graphical analysis shows no evidence that there is a difference between the two procedures. However, in designs with 16 runs there are some cases where NPP seems to give slightly better results.  相似文献

The problem of finding D-optimal designs, with two dispersion factors, for the estimation of all location main effects is investigated in the class of regular unreplicated two-level fractional factorial designs of resolution III. Designs having length three words involving both of the dispersion factors in the defining relation are shown to be inferior in terms of D-optimality. Tables of factors that are named as the two dispersion factors so that the resulting design is either D-optimal or has the largest determinant of the information matrix are provided. Rank-order of designs is studied when the number of length three words involving either one of the dispersion factors and the number of length four words involving both of the dispersion factors are fixed. Rank-order of designs when the numbers of aforementioned words are less than or equal to ten is given.  相似文献

Within the context of choice experimental designs, most authors have proposed designs for the multinomial logit model under the assumption that only the main effects matter. Very little attention has been paid to designs for attribute interaction models. In this article, three types of Bayesian D-optimal designs for the multinomial logit model are studied: main-effects designs, interaction-effects designs, and composite designs. Simulation studies are used to show that in situations where a researcher is not sure whether or not attribute interaction effects are present, it is best to take into account interactions in the design stage. In particular, it is shown that a composite design constructed by including an interaction-effects model and a main-effects model in the design criterion is most robust against misspecification of the underlying model when it comes to making precise predictions.  相似文献

Incomplete-block designs were constructed from three types of three-factor block-structured combinatorial designs which are not necessarily semi-Latin squares but whose treatments are ab initio arranged as in the semi-Latin square. The basic consideration for the construction involves the exploitation of the different block structures of the experimental units of the Quasi-semi-Latin Squares (QSLS) for the same treatments. All the emanating designs are found to be connected, only the designs in nine blocks are both variance- and efficiency-balanced and offer gain in efficiency but lead to about 46 percent loss of information.  相似文献

The effects of missing observations in a designed experiment are reviewed. Conditions are determined for a design to retain equal information, i.e. the same generalized variance of unknown parameters, when either any single or any pair of observations is lost. Some examples of designs with this property are given. Although there are many designs which retain equal information for the loss of exactly t observations, where t = 1,2,3,…, it is shown that it is not possible to obtain any design which retains equal information when any one and any two and also any three observations are missing.  相似文献

For regression models with quantitative factors it is illustrated that the E-optimal design can be extremely inefficient in the sense that it degenerates to a design which takes all observations at only one point. This phenomenon is caused by the different size of the elements in the covariance matrix of the least-squares estimator for the unknown parameters. For these reasons we propose to replace the E-criterion by a corresponding standardized version. The advantage of this approach is demonstrated for the polynomial regression on a nonnegative interval, where the classical and standardized E-optimal designs can be found explicitly. The described phenomena are not restricted to the E-criterion but appear for nearly all optimality criteria proposed in the literature. Therefore standardization is recommended for optimal experimental design in regression models with quantitative factors. The optimal designs with respect to the new standardized criteria satisfy a similar invariance property as the famous D-optimal designs, which allows an easy calculation of standardized optimal designs on many linearly transformed design spaces.  相似文献

For paired comparison experiments involving pairs of multifactor options differing in a specified number of factors the problem of finding optimal designs is considered, when only main effects are to be estimated. It is presumed that the set of factors can be partitioned into two groups such that the number of levels is constant within each group. The optimal designs for this frequently encountered case are also optimal for the corresponding choice experiments under the hypothesis that the parameters in the multinomial logit model are equal to zero.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the construction of optimal blocked main effects designs where m two-level factors are to be studied in N runs which are partitioned into b blocks of equal size. For N ≡ 2±od4 sufficient conditions are derived for a design to be Φ f optimal among all designs having main effects occurring equally often at their high and low levels within blocks and then this result is extended to the class of all designs for the case when the block size is two. A polycross is the pollination by natural hybridization of a group of genotypes, generally selected, grown in isolation from other compatible genotypes in such a way to promote random open pollination. A particular practical application of the polycross method occurs in the production of a synthetic variety resulting from cross-pollinated plants. Laying out these experiments in appropriate designs, known as polycross designs, would not only save experimental resources but also gather more information from the experiment. Different situations may arise in polycross nurseries where accordingly different polycross designs may be used. For situations in which some genotypes interfere in the growth or production of other genotypes, but have to be grown together, neighbour-restricted design is a better option. Furthermore, when the topography of the nursery is such that a known wind system in a certain direction may prevail, then designs balanced for neighbour effects of genotypes only in the direction of wind are appropriate which may help in saving experimental resources to a great extent. Also, when genotypes are planted in a small area without leaving much space between rows, designs balanced for neighbour effects from all possible eight directions are useful to have equal chance of pollinating and being pollinated by every other genotype. Here, polycross designs have been obtained to match above-mentioned three situations. SAS Macros have also been developed to generate these proposed designs.  相似文献

A series of weakly resolvable search designs for the pn factorial experiment is given for which the mean and all main effects are estimable in the presence of any number of two-factor interactions and for which any combination of three or fewer pairs of factors that interact may be detected. The designs have N = p(p–1)n+p runs except in one case where additional runs are required for detection and one case where (p?1)2 additional runs are needed to estimate all (p–1)2 degrees of freedom for each pair of detected interactions. The detection procedure is simple enough that computations can be carried out with hand calculations.  相似文献

In this article we will consider industrial experiments in which some experimental factors have hard to change levels and others have levels which are easy to change. In such situations, fractional factorial split plot designs are often used where the hard to change factors are included as a subset of the whole plot factors and the easy to change factors make up the subplot factors. Here we consider the problem of finding two-level split plot designs which have minimum aberration among those designs which also minimize the number of level changes for the hard to change factors.  相似文献

The purpose of screening experiments is to identify the dominant variables from a set of many potentially active variables which may affect some characteristic y. Edge designs were recently introduced in the literature and are constructed by using conferences matrices and were proved to be robust. We introduce a new class of edge designs which are constructed from skew-symmetric supplementary difference sets. These designs are particularly useful since they can be applied for experiments with an even number of factors and they may exist for orders where conference matrices do not exist. Using this methodology, examples of new edge designs for 6, 14, 22, 26, 38, 42, 46, 58, and 62 factors are constructed. Of special interest are the new edge designs for studying 22 and 58 factors because edge designs with these parameters have not been constructed in the literature since conference matrices of the corresponding order do not exist. The suggested new edge designs achieve the same model-robustness as the traditional edge designs. We also suggest the use of a mirror edge method as a test for the linearity of the true underlying model. We give the details of the methodology and provide some illustrating examples for this new approach. We also show that the new designs have good D-efficiencies when applied to first order models.  相似文献

A Second-order Latin cube of size n x n x n can be used as the design for an experiment in three space dimensions, with the three sets of layers used as three sets of blocks. The n2 treatments are then orthogonal to the main effects X, Y and Z of the blocking systems. Particular interest attaches to second-order Latin cubes whose treatments are an n x n factorial set, with the main effects A and B of the treatment factors orthogonal to the interactions XY, XZ and YZbetween pairs of blocking systems. This note describes such designs where components of the interaction AB are each totally confounded with one of XY, XZ and YZ. Cubes with n = 4 are then described where components of A, B and AB are each partially confounded. Finally, a defective design with n = 4 is described, to illustrate the need for care in composing designs for three dimensions.  相似文献

The D‐optimal minimax criterion is proposed to construct fractional factorial designs. The resulting designs are very efficient, and robust against misspecification of the effects in the linear model. The criterion was first proposed by Wilmut & Zhou (2011); their work is limited to two‐level factorial designs, however. In this paper we extend this criterion to designs with factors having any levels (including mixed levels) and explore several important properties of this criterion. Theoretical results are obtained for construction of fractional factorial designs in general. This minimax criterion is not only scale invariant, but also invariant under level permutations. Moreover, it can be applied to any run size. This is an advantage over some other existing criteria. Block designs are widely used in experimental situations where the experimental units are heterogeneous. The blocked general minimum lower order confounding (B-GMC) criterion is suitable for selecting optimal block designs when the experimenters have some prior information on the importance of ordering of the treatment factors. This paper constructs B-GMC 2n ? m: 2r designs with 5 × 2l/16 + 1 ? n ? (N ? 2l) < 2l ? 1 for l(r + 1 ? l ? n ? m ? 1), where 2n ? m: 2r denotes a two-level regular block design with N = 2n ? m runs, n treatment factors, and 2r blocks. With suitable choice of the blocking factors, each B-GMC block design has a common specific structure. Some examples illustrate the simple and effective construction method.  相似文献

This article proposes an algorithm to construct efficient balanced multi-level k-circulant supersaturated designs with m factors and n runs. The algorithm generates efficient balanced multi-level k-circulant supersaturated designs very fast. Using the proposed algorithm many balanced multi-level supersaturated designs are constructed and cataloged. A list of many optimal and near optimal, multi-level supersaturated designs is also provided for m ≤ 60 and number of levels (q) ≤10. The algorithm can be used to generate two-level k-circulant supersaturated designs also and some large optimal two-level supersaturated designs are presented. An upper bound to the number of factors in a balanced multi-level supersaturated design such that no two columns are fully aliased is also provided.  相似文献
