Verbal Discrimination: A Neglected Chapter in the Social Psychology Of Aggression

While in our culture it is a common experience that hurting others is done more frequently by means of words than by physical force, the phenomena of verbal aggression and verbal discrimination have largely been neglected in the psychology of aggression. Connecting the research fields of aggression, discrimination, and discourse, and discussing the common definition of aggression as intentional harmdoing, it is argued that verbal discrimination, i.e., the verbal treatment of others as members of an allegedly inferior group or category, must be considered a case of aggression as this practice is a violation of other persons' rights or dignity.     

Merit and Gender: Organisations and the Mobilisation of Masculine Bias

Within work organisations, perceptions of gender-based competencies and inclinations affect assignment and other practices and thus the distribution of women and men among different opportunity structures. Five illustrations are provided to support the view that ideas about masculinity and femininity are embedded in organisational arrangements. The opportunity to accumulate merit and the attribution of merit appear to be structured along gender lines.

本文主要从社会性别意识的角度,结合目前农村女性外来务工者所受到的就业排斥现象,呈现对农村妇女就业进行排斥的主流性别意识,以及它如何使农村妇女对其进行内化而形成了自身的性别意识。重新审视现有的就业制度与主流性别意识之间的关系,关注农村流动妇女自身性别意识,有利于减轻并进一步消除农村流动妇女受到的就业排斥。

The Social Psychology of Physical Disability: 1948 and 1988

The editor of JSI's 1948 special issue on the social psychology of physical disability recalls some of the circumstances associated with its creation. He epitomizes the Zeitgeist in this field in 1948 and 1988, speculates on the influence of the JSI issue in the changes that occurred over those 40 years, and discusses several variables that may influence further developments by the year 2000.     

Historical Self-understanding in the Social Sciences: The Use of Thomas Kuhn in Psychology

Thomas Kuhn's (1962, 1970c) thesis concerning the structure of scientific change was critically examined in relation to the historical problems of social science. The use and interpretation of Kuhn's ideas by psychologists was reviewed and found to center around the proliferation of theoretical views as paradigms, the viewing of theoretical differences as paradigm clashes, and efforts to affirm particular conceptions of psychology's past or future. Such use was seen as curbing discussion of fundamental issues, and to reflect a continuing neglect of the foundational problems peculiar to social science. The relevance of Kuhn's work was seen to rest on a more critical view of his idea of "mature" science, better understanding of the type of social psychology upon which his thesis rests, and greater appreciation of his hermeneutic approach to social-historical analysis.     

日本雇佣体制转变的社会影响

上个世纪90年代后,伴随着日本经济泡沫的破灭,日本传统的终身雇佣和年功序列的雇佣体制出现重大转变。一方面社会上出现了大量的失业人员,另一方面非正式员工的数量急剧增加;而同时年功序列的工资体系也逐渐被“成果主义”的工资体系所代替。雇佣体制的变化给日本人的生活、社会的贫富差距以及人们的价值观念带来很大的影响,并且在社会保障和职业教育等方面给日本社会提出了许多新的课题。     

The Politics of Race and Gender: Children's Perceptions of Discrimination and the U.S. Presidency

In the year prior to Hillary Clinton's and Barack Obama's bids to become the Democratic nominee for the U.S. presidency, we explored children's views about the role of race and gender in the U.S. presidency, with a specific focus on perceptions of discrimination. Specifically, we examined children's (aged 5 to 10) knowledge of and attributions for the lack of female (Study 1, N = 76), African American (Study 2, N = 64), and Latino (Study 3, N = 65) presidents. Results indicated that children are knowledgeable about the gender, race, and ethnicity of past presidents, and that many children attribute the lack of female, African American, and Latino presidents to gender and racial discrimination. Theoretical and policy implications of the work are discussed.

新农村建设是加快社会主义现代化步伐实现国家发展战略转移的一项历史任务,它将发轫于20世纪80年代如今已成为联合国全球化战略的"社会性别主流化"观念融入其中,可以矫正、扼制和批判现存的性别歧视现象,促进市场经济发展中不和谐的性别关系的调整。由于性别歧视现象对宪政自由、公平、正义、人权等理念的实践亦有直接的负面影响,所以,深入探讨宪政框架下的新农村建设中的"社会性别主流化"的推进问题,不仅可以拓宽宪法学的研究视阈,而且可以基于宪政机制所具有的化解各类权利冲突的优越性,对国家政治稳定、经济繁荣以及全体公民人权的实现,产生积极的影响。
