Good Intentions - Unpredictable Consequences

A commendable degree of success has been achieved in relocating people with learning disabilities from residential institutions into ordinary community settings. Nevertheless, a challenging task remains if people with all levels of learning disabilities are to be enabled to become meaningfully involved in ordinary community activities. The author argues that a structured day service has a vital role to play in this process, but that, unless the underlying problems that have continued to frustrate the development of a coherent national day care strategy are objectively reappraised and addressed, the true potential of the 'care in the community' policy will not only never be realised, but could actually become imperilled. This paper offers evidence to support the view that current policy trends are based on normalisation theories that, although sound and commendable in principle, have been misunderstood and misused. Consequently, the premises upon which these policy trends are based are fundamentally flawed.     

Using Work Values to Predict Post‐Retirement Work Intentions

Work values might be proximal predictors of individuals' late‐career intentions because they serve as guiding principles for the selection, evaluation, and justification of vocational behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between work values and post‐retirement work intentions. The authors investigated individual work values within the structure of 4 higher order values elaborated on by Schwartz et al. ( 2012 ). Relationships between work values and 4 types of post‐retirement work intentions were examined. Data from 1,071 employees of a German logistics company were used to test the hypotheses. The results of a structural equation model indicated that work values were differentially related to the 4 types of post‐retirement work intentions. The identified work value–work type combinations add to the literature on post‐retirement work. Practice implications for promoting positive individual and organizational outcomes are drawn from the results.     

Making the Randomized Response Technique Work

The ability of the randomized response technique to obtain sensitiveinformation on surveys was compared to two other methods involvingself-administered questionnaires. Using a national probabilitysample, and extending upon a number of developmental changeswhich have evolved over the years, the randomized response techniqueproved to be decidedly superior to the other methods.     

Making the Net Work for Intercultural Education

This article examines the use of the Internet in education, and how its use can revolutionise the way children learn, the way they communicate their ideas and the role of the teacher in the classroom. The Internet has some of the greatest potential in the field of education and particularly intercultural education—due to the nature of the medium, cultural, national, gender, racial and national barriers between students can be reduced and communication with any part of the world is immediate, frequent and informal.

There are many challenges for educators using this new medium in the classroom—there is a great lack of training in IT, the schools themselves need to be connected and there must be a fundamental change in the philosophy of teaching. In addition, there is a grave need for on‐line educational content. This article examines three educational websites for young people and presents an example of a group exercise for student publishing.     

Beyond Words: Comics in the Social Work Classroom

ABSTRACT

Equipping future social workers to interrogate social justice, human rights, and cultural issues requires a revision of social work education. Culturally relevant teaching is increasingly important in today’s globalized world. In this article, we explore the role of comics as a form of social work pedagogy to tackle complex social issues. The article argues that comics offer specific benefits to educators seeking to develop critical thinking and self-reflexivity in their students. We present findings from focus group discussions with social work students to examine the relevance of comics in social work education. Ultimately, the use of comics as a teaching tool contributes to the effective preparation of future social workers through the mutual transformation it engenders in students and educators.     

Student Views on Good Practice in Social Work Education

This article focuses on the delivery of a social work degree programme in England, one of the constituent jurisdictions of the United Kingdom, and explores student perceptions of their learning experience and what constitutes effective teaching. The data are drawn from a larger research project which is ongoing and focuses upon the specific ways in which the BSc Hons Social Work degree at a university in the East Midlands prepares students to meet the demands of employers. Linked to the national evaluation of the new social work degree, social work academics at the university worked with final year social work degree students as co-researchers to evaluate student views on the quality of teaching practices across the teaching team.     

Making Sexuality Visible in Australian Social Work Education

As a social axis of analysis, sexuality has not received the same level of recent attention from social work educators in Australia as it has from its counterparts in the northern hemisphere. Following McNay's notion of ‘situated intersubjectivity’ as a theoretical framework, this paper sets out a socio-cultural approach to making sexuality visible. It details a teaching exemplar, demonstrating a number of experiential exercises designed to enhance final year social work student investigations of cultural discourses and social practices of people's everyday sexual lives, including sexual diversity, homophobia, heterosexuality and heteronormativity.     

Making Strategic Communications Work to Prevent Elder Abuse

ABSTRACT

With more and more noise hitting the public, more tasks to accomplish, and limited resources, elder abuse prevention organizations must speak with one voice and act in solid partnership. This article touches on processes, systems, procedures, and resources necessary to develop strategic communications plans that are single in strategy and consistent in objectives and image. While the problem of elder abuse has been primarily covered in the academic and health professional press, this article focuses on the usage of mainstream marketing and communications principles to offer suggestions on how to achieve broad national awareness of the issues.
