Meet the Parents
During the past 10 years that I have lived in China, nay parents have visited me once. As my family hails from a rural village (in southern Finland), which is often -- accidentally -- left off of maps, it is stressful enough to make the weekly groteW shopping ride to the closest city, to say nothing of flying thousands of kilometers to a metropolis of millions to see their firstborn. One can only imagine how overwhelming a city like Beijing must be for someone whose highlight of the day is to pick up the mail -- my mother always gets a little too excited over the prospect of catching a glimpse of a neighbor on the way to the mailbox.  相似文献

AS a metropolitan resident who is used to seeing towering buildings, an incessant stream of vehicles and people, I've always longed to have a taste of an ancient civilization, which is vigorous but exquisite, bold but elegant, natural but mysterious. I realized my dream when I went to Xi'an, a capital with a history of over 1,000 years. Xi'an was once the capital for eleven dynasties, including the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang. This is the place where China's ancient civilization developed. Ancestors at Banpo created exquisite painted pottery; the Western Zhou Dynasty (about 1,066-771 B.C.) saw the height of the splendors of the bronze culture; the Qin Emperor Shi Huang (Qin Dynasty, from about 221-206 B.C.)  相似文献

IN Guangzhou, where restaurants are plentiful and food from many places is served, the baozai meal, a kind of traditional Chinese fast food, has retained its place in the hearts of Guangzhou's caterers. The history of the baozai meal starts at least from the beginning of this century. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, Guangzhou was the largest trading port in south China with a developed, commodities-based economy. There were many dockworkers and porters living in the city at the time. They worked very hard and were often too busy to eat their meals at home. As a result, different kinds of meals were invented to meet their needs, such as the botou meal (bo is kind of earthen bowl), the dietou meal (die is small plate) and the baozai meal  相似文献

Silkworm raising and silk reeling is a great contribution of ancient Chinese women to the world civilization and progress. When the Silk Road opened in the Hah Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago, westerners used to call China the Kingdom of Silk. The gauze dress unearthed from the Mawangdui No. 1 Tomb of the Han Dynasty in Hunan's Changsha, is as thin as cicada's wings and only weighs 49 grams. Made of high quality silk, this dress is as soft and light as the dress made of georgette, revealing the ancient Chinese weaving workers' high skill and talent. It is a silk dress, the earliest and best preserved in the world currently. Also excavated from the same tomb is a mummified woman's body. The woman was the wife of a prime minister of a kingdom  相似文献
