An Ordinary Mother Lived an Extraordinary Life

MY mother, Hou Xiangyun, was born into an ordinary family in the Eastern District in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province in the winter of 1890. My grandfather was a clerk in a pen shop. My grandmother managed the house and also made some money by winding silk yarn on a spool at home. Suzhou was one of the birthplaces of silk fabric in China, and the silk business was mostly concentrated in the Eastern District of the city. Mural Paintings in A Liao Tomb

It was a custom in the Liao Dynasty to decorate tombs with murals. The paintings in Zhao Dejun's tomb, excavated in Beijing, provide a well-known example. During the Five Dynasties period, Zhao Dejun was a warlord in Youzhou, which became the southern capital of Nanjing in the Liao Dynasty (and even later, was renamed Beijing). IN our family album, there is a picture of my grandfather, Fang Xiaoyue, and grandmother, Ma Junwan. The picture was taken in the 1920s when my grandparents were a newly married couple. Glass Bowl with Knobs

IN 1964, the tomb of Hua Fang was excavated at a construction site in Beijing's western suburbs. Hua Fang was the wife of Wang Jun, who was a prefectural governor of Youzhou (an ancient name for Beijing) during the Western Jin Dynasty. Found in the tomb were a bone ruler and a silver bell in good condition, as well as a packet of half-transparent pieces of glassware. The fragments were restored by experts in 1984 into a complete vessel, which is currently displayed in the Capital Museum.

Zhang Tian, a former white-collared employee with a company in Beijing, established the farm in 2011.     

Gilded Silver Crown with Double-dragon Pattern

Unearthed from a Liao tomb at Zhangjia Yingzi, Jianping County, Liaoning Province in 1956, this gilded silver crown with double-dragon pattern is 19 cm high and 20.9 cm in diameter. Its shape is suggestive of a mountain: higher in the middle and lower on both sides. On the front is a carving in the shape of a pearl surrounded by an S-shape pattern symbolizing good fortune. There is a lively dragon on either side. The complete design is based on the old theme "two dragons play with a pearl." Traditions of the Qidan, an ancient nationality of northern China, are evident in the design of the crown. It is recorded in     

Yi Daughters Go Beyond Daliangshan

The Yi nationality, which has a population of 6.57 million, are spread over a wide area including Yunnan. Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi. Most of them live in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province in compact communities.In ancient times, the forefathers of the Yis began to live and multiplied in Dianchi. Gongdu (now hi the southeast Xichang in Sichuan Province) and other places. Within the boundary of Lunan YI Autonomous County are ancient volcanic hills including the world famous Shilin (Stone Forest).The Yi nationality has its own language attd alphabet. This is China's earliest syllabic alphabet. Developed in the 13th century, it contains some ten thousand symbols, but of these a thousand symbols are used most frequently. After the Yi language standardization program was passed in 1975. it was tested in the Yi regions in Sichuan. Art Appreciation

In a rural fish pond. lotuses are in full bloom. lotus roots are spreading, ducks are playing, fish are swimming about, and a couple in a boat are happily feeding the fish. Disabled Woman Heads Beijing Fans Association

THE next time you go to a football match in Beijing, look around the edge of the field. You might see a young woman in a wheelchair cheering her favorite team. Wu Jinghong is more than a handicapped person, more than a woman football fan. She is the head of the Beijing Football Fans Association, a group more than 1,000 members strong. Wu alone started the association in 1988 and because she is a woman, encouraged other women fans to openly support their favorite teams.

AT a conference of the World Whaling Commission in Cambridge, England, in 1981, a special video tape caught the attention of experts at the meeting. D. 1368-1644), rebuilt in 1942 and now serves as a working monastery for Buddhist nuns. The building is a cultural relic under preservation by the city. Looking Towards the 1995 World Women's Conference——the second international seminar on women's studies

Women's development is a process. It is also a process to await the Fourth World Conference on Women to be held in Beijing in 1995, a process to further mobilize women from various countries to gain equality between the sexes and to take a part in social development. The second international seminar on women's studies was held from November 23 to 26, 1993, at Beijing University in preparation for this day. Some 100 women researchers from Australia, Bangladesh', Canada, the United States, England, Malaysia and Japan, as well as Hong Kong and China participated in the event. It was one of the most lively and active seminars held during this process. To take prompt action in development was a common nderstanding of the participants.
