Dear Women of China Thank you for a wonderful September issue. The cover photo was both sad and uplifting. I was drawn by the little boy＇s determined face and the title mentioning Zhouqu. I knew it had to be some kind,of disaster, and reading about the relief efforts and the people affected was touching. In the past two years, China has seen quite a few natural disasters. I wonder what may have caused these problems to begin with. I hope that the people in China will have safer futures.

The Chinese Government and countless people in society attach importance to the children＇s healthy growth. July 1st marks the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China. It is a big event for mainlanders and Hongkongers alike. These days, the "Pearl of the East" is dynamic-as ever. FAMILY planning and population control has been the basic State policy of China since 1972. The 25th Article of the Constitution of the People's Republic of China promulgated in 1978 stipulates, "The state promotes family planning so that population growth may fit the plans for economic and social development."
