In this article, maximum likelihood estimates of an exchangeable multinomial distribution using a parametric form to model the parameters as functions of covariates are derived. The non linearity of the exchangeable multinomial distribution and the parametric model make direct application of Newton Rahpson and Fisher's scoring algorithms computationally infeasible. Instead parameter estimates are obtained as solutions to an iterative weighted least-squares algorithm. A completely monotonic parametric form is proposed for defining the marginal probabilities that results in a valid probability model.  相似文献

Representative points (RPs) are a set of points that optimally represents a distribution in terms of mean square error. When the prior data is location biased, the direct methods such as the k-means algorithm may be inefficient to obtain the RPs. In this article, a new indirect algorithm is proposed to search the RPs based on location-biased datasets. Such an algorithm does not constrain the parameter model of the true distribution. The empirical study shows that such algorithm can obtain better RPs than the k-means algorithm.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a method to assess influence in skew-Birnbaum–Saunders regression models, which are an extension based on the skew-normal distribution of the usual Birnbaum–Saunders (BS) regression model. An interesting characteristic that the new regression model has is the capacity of predicting extreme percentiles, which is not possible with the BS model. In addition, since the observed likelihood function associated with the new regression model is more complex than that from the usual model, we facilitate the parameter estimation using a type-EM algorithm. Moreover, we employ influence diagnostic tools that considers this algorithm. Finally, a numerical illustration includes a brief simulation study and an analysis of real data in order to show the proposed methodology.  相似文献

Mixed-Weibull distribution has been used to model a wide range of failure data sets, and in many practical situations the number of components in a mixture model is unknown. Thus, the parameter estimation of a mixed-Weibull distribution is considered and the important issue of how to determine the number of components is discussed. Two approaches are proposed to solve this problem. One is the method of moments and the other is a regularization type of fuzzy clustering algorithm. Finally, numerical examples and two real data sets are given to illustrate the features of the proposed approaches.  相似文献

New techniques for the analysis of stochastic volatility models in which the logarithm of conditional variance follows an autoregressive model are developed. A cyclic Metropolis algorithm is used to construct a Markov-chain simulation tool. Simulations from this Markov chain converge in distribution to draws from the posterior distribution enabling exact finite-sample inference. The exact solution to the filtering/smoothing problem of inferring about the unobserved variance states is a by-product of our Markov-chain method. In addition, multistep-ahead predictive densities can be constructed that reflect both inherent model variability and parameter uncertainty. We illustrate our method by analyzing both daily and weekly data on stock returns and exchange rates. Sampling experiments are conducted to compare the performance of Bayes estimators to method of moments and quasi-maximum likelihood estimators proposed in the literature. In both parameter estimation and filtering, the Bayes estimators outperform these other approaches.  相似文献

This paper presents a robust extension of factor analysis model by assuming the multivariate normal mean–variance mixture of Birnbaum–Saunders distribution for the unobservable factors and errors. A computationally analytical EM-based algorithm is developed to find maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters. The asymptotic standard errors of parameter estimates are derived under an information-based paradigm. Numerical merits of the proposed methodology are illustrated using both simulated and real datasets.  相似文献

This article introduces a new asymmetric distribution constructed by assuming the multivariate normal mean-variance mixture model. Called normal mean-variance mixture of the Lindley distribution, we derive some mathematical properties of the new distribution. Also, a feasible maximum likelihood estimation procedure using the EM algorithm and the asymptotic standard errors of parameter estimates are developed. The performance of the proposed distribution is illustrated by means of real datasets and simulation analysis.  相似文献

Very often, in psychometric research, as in educational assessment, it is necessary to analyze item response from clustered respondents. The multiple group item response theory (IRT) model proposed by Bock and Zimowski [12] provides a useful framework for analyzing such type of data. In this model, the selected groups of respondents are of specific interest such that group-specific population distributions need to be defined. The usual assumption for parameter estimation in this model, which is that the latent traits are random variables following different symmetric normal distributions, has been questioned in many works found in the IRT literature. Furthermore, when this assumption does not hold, misleading inference can result. In this paper, we consider that the latent traits for each group follow different skew-normal distributions, under the centered parameterization. We named it skew multiple group IRT model. This modeling extends the works of Azevedo et al. [4], Bazán et al. [11] and Bock and Zimowski [12] (concerning the latent trait distribution). Our approach ensures that the model is identifiable. We propose and compare, concerning convergence issues, two Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) algorithms for parameter estimation. A simulation study was performed in order to evaluate parameter recovery for the proposed model and the selected algorithm concerning convergence issues. Results reveal that the proposed algorithm recovers properly all model parameters. Furthermore, we analyzed a real data set which presents asymmetry concerning the latent traits distribution. The results obtained by using our approach confirmed the presence of negative asymmetry for some latent trait distributions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Simplex regression model is often employed to analyze continuous proportion data in many studies. In this paper, we extend the assumption of a constant dispersion parameter (homogeneity) to varying dispersion parameter (heterogeneity) in Simplex regression model, and present the B-spline to approximate the smoothing unknown function within the Bayesian framework. A hybrid algorithm combining the block Gibbs sampler and the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm is presented for sampling observations from the posterior distribution. The procedures for computing model comparison criteria such as conditional predictive ordinate statistic, deviance information criterion, and averaged mean squared error are presented. Also, we develop a computationally feasible Bayesian case-deletion influence measure based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence. Several simulation studies and a real example are employed to illustrate the proposed methodologies.  相似文献

This article considers a Bayesian hierarchical model for multiple comparisons in linear models where the population medians satisfy a simple order restriction. Representing the asymmetric Laplace distribution as a scale mixture of normals with an exponential mixing density and a continuous prior restricted to order constraints, a Gibbs sampling algorithm for parameter estimation and simultaneous comparison of treatment medians is proposed. Posterior probabilities of all possible hypotheses on the equality/inequality of treatment medians are estimated using Bayes factors that are computed via the Savage-Dickey density ratios. The performance of the proposed median-based model is investigated in the simulated and real datasets. The results show that the proposed method can outperform the commonly used method that is based on treatment means, when data are from nonnormal distributions.  相似文献

Several models for longitudinal data with nonrandom missingness are available. The selection model of Diggle and Kenward is one of these models. It has been mentioned by many authors that this model depends on untested modelling assumptions, such as the response distribution, from the observed data. So, a sensitivity analysis of the study’s conclusions for such assumptions is needed. The stochastic EM algorithm is proposed and developed to handle continuous longitudinal data with nonrandom intermittent missing values when the responses have non-normal distribution. This is a step in investigating the sensitivity of the parameter estimates to the change of the response distribution. The proposed technique is applied to real data from the International Breast Cancer Study Group.  相似文献

Abstract

Variable selection in finite mixture of regression (FMR) models is frequently used in statistical modeling. The majority of applications of variable selection in FMR models use a normal distribution for regression error. Such assumptions are unsuitable for a set of data containing a group or groups of observations with heavy tails and outliers. In this paper, we introduce a robust variable selection procedure for FMR models using the t distribution. With appropriate selection of the tuning parameters, the consistency and the oracle property of the regularized estimators are established. To estimate the parameters of the model, we develop an EM algorithm for numerical computations and a method for selecting tuning parameters adaptively. The parameter estimation performance of the proposed model is evaluated through simulation studies. The application of the proposed model is illustrated by analyzing a real data set.  相似文献

This paper considers quantile regression models using an asymmetric Laplace distribution from a Bayesian point of view. We develop a simple and efficient Gibbs sampling algorithm for fitting the quantile regression model based on a location-scale mixture representation of the asymmetric Laplace distribution. It is shown that the resulting Gibbs sampler can be accomplished by sampling from either normal or generalized inverse Gaussian distribution. We also discuss some possible extensions of our approach, including the incorporation of a scale parameter, the use of double exponential prior, and a Bayesian analysis of Tobit quantile regression. The proposed methods are illustrated by both simulated and real data.  相似文献

A folded type model is developed for analysing compositional data. The proposed model involves an extension of the α‐transformation for compositional data and provides a new and flexible class of distributions for modelling data defined on the simplex sample space. Despite its rather seemingly complex structure, employment of the EM algorithm guarantees efficient parameter estimation. The model is validated through simulation studies and examples which illustrate that the proposed model performs better in terms of capturing the data structure, when compared to the popular logistic normal distribution, and can be advantageous over a similar model without folding.  相似文献

We present a class of truncated non linear regression models for location and scale where the truncated nature of the data is incorporated into the statistical model by assuming that the response variable follows a truncated distribution. The location parameter of the response variable is assumed to be modeled by a continuous non linear function of covariates and unknown parameters. In addition, the proposed model also allows for the scale parameter of the responses to be characterized by a continuous function of the covariates and unknown parameters. Three particular cases of the proposed models are presented by considering the response variable to follow a truncated normal, truncated skew normal, and truncated beta distribution. These truncated non linear regression models are constructed assuming fixed known truncation limits and model parameters are estimated by direct maximization of the log-likelihood using a non linear optimization algorithm. Standardized residuals and diagnostic metrics based on the cases deletion are considered to verify the adequacy of the model and to detect outliers and influential observations. Results based on simulated data are presented to assess the frequentist properties of estimates, and a real data set on soil-water retention from the Buriti Vermelho River Basin database is analyzed using the proposed methodology.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A general Bayesian random effects model for analyzing longitudinal mixed correlated continuous and negative binomial responses with and without missing data is presented. This Bayesian model, given some random effects, uses a normal distribution for the continuous response and a negative binomial distribution for the count response. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithm is described for estimating the posterior distribution of the parameters. This Bayesian model is illustrated by a simulation study. For sensitivity analysis to investigate the change of parameter estimates with respect to the perturbation from missing at random to not missing at random assumption, the use of posterior curvature is proposed. The model is applied to a medical data, obtained from an observational study on women, where the correlated responses are the negative binomial response of joint damage and continuous response of body mass index. The simultaneous effects of some covariates on both responses are also investigated.  相似文献

The Zero-inflated Poisson distribution has been used in the modeling of count data in different contexts. This model tends to be influenced by outliers because of the excessive occurrence of zeroes, thus outlier identification and robust parameter estimation are important for such distribution. Some outlier identification methods are studied in this paper, and their applications and results are also presented with an example. To eliminate the effect of outliers, two robust parameter estimates are proposed based on the trimmed mean and the Winsorized mean. Simulation results show the robustness of our proposed parameter estimates.  相似文献

We propose here a robust multivariate extension of the bivariate Birnbaum–Saunders (BS) distribution derived by Kundu et al. [Bivariate Birnbaum–Saunders distribution and associated inference. J Multivariate Anal. 2010;101:113–125], based on scale mixtures of normal (SMN) distributions that are used for modelling symmetric data. This resulting multivariate BS-type distribution is an absolutely continuous distribution whose marginal and conditional distributions are of BS-type distribution of Balakrishnan et al. [Estimation in the Birnbaum–Saunders distribution based on scalemixture of normals and the EM algorithm. Stat Oper Res Trans. 2009;33:171–192]. Due to the complexity of the likelihood function, parameter estimation by direct maximization is very difficult to achieve. For this reason, we exploit the nice hierarchical representation of the proposed distribution to propose a fast and accurate EM algorithm for computing the maximum likelihood (ML) estimates of the model parameters. We then evaluate the finite-sample performance of the developed EM algorithm and the asymptotic properties of the ML estimates through empirical experiments. Finally, we illustrate the obtained results with a real data and display the robustness feature of the estimation procedure developed here.  相似文献

This article proposes to use a standardized version of the normal-Laplace mixture distribution for the modeling of tail-fatness in an asset return distribution and for the fitting of volatility smiles implied by option prices. Despite the fact that only two free parameters are used, the proposed distribution allows arbitrarily high kurtosis and uses one shape parameter to adjust the density function within three standard deviations for any specified kurtosis. For an asset price model based on this distribution, the closed-form formulas for European option prices are derived, and subsequently the volatility smiles can be easily obtained. A regression analysis is conducted to show that the kurtosis, which is commonly used as an index of tail-fatness, is unable to explain the smiles satisfactorily under the proposed model, because the additional shape parameter also significantly accounts for the deviations revealed in smiles. The effectiveness of the proposed parsimonious model is demonstrated in the practical examples where the model is fitted to the volatility smiles implied by the NASDAQ market traded foreign exchange options.  相似文献

This study is concerned with the extension of the Mallows–Bradley–Terry ranking model for one block comparison consisting of all the items of interest to situations which allow an expression of no preference. We consider a modification of the Mallows–Bradley–Terry ranking model by introducing an additional parameter, called an index of discrimination, in the model. This permits ties in the model. The maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters are found using a Maximization–Minimization algorithm: the evaluation of the mathematical expectations involved in the log-likelihood equation is obtained by generating samples of Monte Carlo Markov chain from the stationary distribution. In addition, a simulation study for asymptotic properties assessment has been made. The proposed method is applied to analyze data election.  相似文献
