A set of three goodness-of-fit procedures is proposed to investigate the adequacy of fit of Fisher's distribution on the sphere as a model for a given sample of spherical data. The procedures are all based on standard tests using the empirical distribution function.  相似文献

This paper considers the generalised empirical Bayes two-action (testing) and multiple action problems concerning a distribution function The Dirichiet process priors p of Ferguson have been used as the prior distributions on the space of distribution functions on the real line. Test procedures are constructed for testing the goodness-of-fit of the error distribution in the regression context. The test statistic is based on an L 2-type distance between the characteristic function of the (assumed) error distribution and the empirical characteristic function of the residuals. The asymptotic null distribution as well as the behavior of the test statistic under contiguous alternatives is investigated, while the issue of the choice of suitable estimators has been particularly emphasized. Theoretical results are accompanied by a simulation study.  相似文献

The empirical likelihood method is proposed to construct the confidence regions for the difference in value between coefficients of two-sample linear regression model. Unlike existing empirical likelihood procedures for one-sample linear regression models, as the empirical likelihood ratio function is not concave, the usual maximum empirical likelihood estimation cannot be obtained directly. To overcome this problem, we propose to incorporate a natural and well-explained restriction into likelihood function and obtain a restricted empirical likelihood ratio statistic (RELR). It is shown that RELR has an asymptotic chi-squared distribution. Furthermore, to improve the coverage accuracy of the confidence regions, a Bartlett correction is applied. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by a simulation study.  相似文献

The discrete stable family constitutes an interesting two-parameter model of distributions on the non-negative integers with a Paretian tail. The practical use of the discrete stable distribution is inhibited by the lack of an explicit expression for its probability function. Moreover, the distribution does not possess moments of any order. Therefore, the usual tools—such as the maximum-likelihood method or even the moment method—are not feasible for parameter estimation. However, the probability generating function of the discrete stable distribution is available in a simple form. Hence, we initially explore the application of some existing estimation procedures based on the empirical probability generating function. Subsequently, we propose a new estimation method by minimizing a suitable weighted L 2-distance between the empirical and the theoretical probability generating functions. In addition, we provide a goodness-of-fit statistic based on the same distance.  相似文献

In linear and nonparametric regression models, the problem of testing for symmetry of the distribution of errors is considered. We propose a test statistic which utilizes the empirical characteristic function of the corresponding residuals. The asymptotic null distribution of the test statistic as well as its behavior under alternatives is investigated. A simulation study compares bootstrap versions of the proposed test to other more standard procedures.  相似文献

In addition to the distribution function, the mean residual life (MRL) function is the other important function which can be used to characterize a lifetime in survival analysis and reliability. For inference on the MRL function, some procedures have been proposed in the literature. However, the coverage accuracy of such procedures may be low when the sample size is small. In this article, an empirical likelihood (EL) inference procedure of MRL function is proposed and the limiting distribution of the EL ratio for MRL function is derived. Based on the result, we obtain confidence interval/band for the MRL function. The proposed method is compared with the normal approximation based method through simulation study in terms of coverage probability.  相似文献

Ranked-set sampling is an alternative to random sampling for settings in which measurements are difficult or costly. Ranked-set sampling utilizes information gained without measurement to structure the eventual measured sample. This additional information yields improved properties for ranked-set sample procedures relative to their simple random sample counterparts. We review the available nonparametric procedures for data from ranked-set samples. Estimation of the distribution function was the first nonparametric setting to which ranked-set sampling methodology was applied. Since the first paper on the ranked-set sample empirical distribution function, the two-sample location setting, the sign test, and the signed-rank test have all been examined for ranked-set samples. In addition, estimation of the distribution function has been considered in a more general setting. We discuss the similarities and differences in the properties of the ranked-set sample procedures for the various settings  相似文献

General conditions for the asymptotic efficiency of certain new inference procedures based on empirical transform functions are developed. A number of important processes, such as the empirical characteristic function, the empirical moment generating function, and the empirical moments, are considered as special cases.  相似文献

When faced with the problem of goodness-of-fit to the Lognormal distribution, testing methods typically reduce to comparing the empirical distribution function of the corresponding logarithmic data to that of the normal distribution. In this article, we consider a family of test statistics which make use of the moment structure of the Lognormal law. In particular, a continuum of moment conditions is employed in the construction of a new statistic for this distribution. The proposed test is shown to be consistent against fixed alternatives, and a simulation study shows that it is more powerful than several classical procedures, including those utilizing the empirical distribution function. We conclude by applying the proposed method to some, not so typical, data sets.  相似文献

Abstract.  The aim of this paper is to prove the validity of smooth residual bootstrap versions of procedures that are based on the empirical process of residuals estimated from a non-parametric regression model. From this result, consistency of various model tests in non-parametric regression is deduced, such as goodness-of-fit tests for the regression and variance function, tests for equality of regression functions and tests concerning the error distribution.  相似文献

The mean past lifetime (MPL) function (also known as the expected inactivity time function) is of interest in many fields such as reliability theory and survival analysis, actuarial studies and forensic science. For estimation of the MPL function some procedures have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we give a central limit theorem result for the estimator of MPL function based on a right-censored random sample from an unknown distribution. The limiting distribution is used to construct normal approximation-based confidence interval for MPL. Furthermore, we use the empirical likelihood ratio procedure to obtain confidence interval for the MPL function. These two intervals are compared with each other through simulation study in terms of coverage probability. Finally, a couple of numerical example illustrating the theory is also given.  相似文献

A general methodology is presented for non-parametric testing of independence, location and dispersion in multiple regression. The proposed testing procedures are based on the concepts of conditional distribution function, conditional quantile, and conditional shortest t-fraction. Techniques involved come from empirical process and extreme-value theory. The asymptotic distributions are standard Gumbel.  相似文献

In this paper, empirical likelihood inference for longitudinal data within the framework of partial linear regression models are investigated. The proposed procedures take into consideration the correlation within groups without involving direct estimation of nuisance parameters in the correlation matrix. The empirical likelihood method is used to estimate the regression coefficients and the baseline function, and to construct confidence intervals. A nonparametric version of Wilk's theorem for the limiting distribution of the empirical likelihood ratio is derived. Compared with methods based on normal approximations, the empirical likelihood does not require consistent estimators for the asymptotic variance and bias. The finite sample behaviour of the proposed method is evaluated with simulation and illustrated with an AIDS clinical trial data set.  相似文献

A unified approach of parameter-estimation and goodness-of-fit testing is proposed. The new procedures may be applied to arbitrary laws with continuous distribution function. Specifically, both the method of estimation and the goodness-of-fit test are based on the idea of optimally transforming the original data to the uniform distribution, the criterion of optimality being an L2-type distance between the empirical characteristic function of the transformed data, and the characteristic function of the uniform (0,1)(0,1) distribution. Theoretical properties of the new estimators and tests are studied and some connections with classical statistics, moment-based procedures and non-parametric methods are investigated. Comparison with standard procedures via Monte Carlo is also included, along with a real-data application.  相似文献

Generating samples from a two-stage distribution is an important part of the study of mixture models. These samples are used to examine estimation procedures, and other properties of the mixture model. In this paper we present an exemplary sampling method for generating data from the mixed distribution. This method uses the order statistic spacings of the mixing distribution and random sampling from the distribution conditional on the mixing variable to produce samples from the mixed distribution. We show that this exemplary procedure often produces data with an empirical distribution function closer to the mixed distribution than the Method of Composition. We illustrate the method with an example.  相似文献

The author compares two estimators of a continuous, concave distribution function having support on the positive half line. In terms of samples from uniform distributions, he gives stochastic bounds for the pointwise and sup‐norm differences between the least concave majorant of the empirical distribution function and the underlying distribution function. He also offers evidence demonstrating the almost paradoxical result that the empirical distribution function is not as good an estimator as its least concave majorant in terms of sup‐norm error but a better pointwise estimator of the true distribution function in terms of mean squared error.  相似文献

Abstract

An exact, closed form, and easy to compute expression for the mean integrated squared error (MISE) of a kernel estimator of a normal mixture cumulative distribution function is derived for the class of arbitrary order Gaussian-based kernels. Comparisons are made with MISE of the empirical distribution function, the infeasible minimum MISE, and the uniform kernel. A simple plug-in method of simultaneously selecting the optimal bandwidth and kernel order is proposed based on a non asymptotic approximation of the unknown distribution by a normal mixture. A simulation study shows that the method provides a viable alternative to existing bandwidth selection procedures.  相似文献

This paper discusses a goodness-of-fit test that uses the integral of the squared modulus of the difference between the empirical characteristic function of the sample data and the characteristic function of the hypothesized distribution. Monte Carlo procedures are employed to obtain the empirical percentage points for testing the fit of normal, logistic and exponential distributions with unknown location and scale parameters. Results of Monte Carlo power comparisons with other well-developed goodness-of-fit tests are summarized. Tne proposed test is shown to have superior power for testing the fit of the logistic distibotion (for moderate sample sizes) against a wide range of alternative distributions.  相似文献

We consider the testing problem in the mixed-effects functional analysis of variance models. We develop asymptotically optimal (minimax) testing procedures for testing the significance of functional global trend and the functional fixed effects based on the empirical wavelet coefficients of the data. Wavelet decompositions allow one to characterize various types of assumed smoothness conditions on the response function under the nonparametric alternatives. The distribution of the functional random-effects component is defined in the wavelet domain and captures the sparseness of wavelet representation for a wide variety of functions. The simulation study presented in the paper demonstrates the finite sample properties of the proposed testing procedures. We also applied them to the real data from the physiological experiments.  相似文献
