IN the Shapingba District in Chongqing, Sichuan Province, there is the Hualong Bridge. During World War Ⅱ, my father ran a bean curd plant near the bridge where he sold bean curd and green vegetables. My mother made the bean curd while I helped to tend the kitchen fire. This small bean curd plant witnessed the hard times that my family had undergone in the eight years of the War of Resistance Against the Japanese Aggression. Now I'm over 70 and live together with my children in Hong Kong. Although I now live a peaceful and comfortable life, I cannot forget the past—the long, unstable years by the  相似文献

ONCE in a restaurant specializing in vegetarian food in Hubei Province, I saw some dishes on the menu which did not sound like vegetarian food, such as chicken, duck, fish and pork. It also includes bamboo shoots, mushrooms, edible fungus, aquatic plants and dried fruit. This kind of diet boasts a long history. As early as the Qin Dynasty (221-206 B.C.) and the early Han  相似文献

THE changes in collars, sleeves and lace of women's clothing should be regarded as changes in form. But the early 20th century also saw changes in the ideology of and attitudes towards women's fashions. The first striking change was that women began to adopt men's fashions. Some women who struggled for emancipation chose to dress as men in order to change the image of women as delicate and frail. Around 1903, Qiu Jin, a famous woman fighter of the Chinese democratic revolution, lived in Beijing. A Japanese friend was deeply impressed by  相似文献

Millions of urban educated youths were assigned to bordering regions, pastoral areas, as well as agricultural areas, during China's chaotic "cultural revolution" (1966-1976), to take part in Iocal production. Known as "urban educated youths settling down in the mountain and rural areas to join in labor," the movement was rigorously carried out all over the country during that time. Settling down in remote, poverty stricken villages and pastoral lands, these young people spent their youth in hardships. They shared the hard lives of local peasants and herdsman, and were tempered by the most rigorous challenges. Many of them returned to cities when the "cultural revolution" was over. However, their lives in the countryside have been ingrained deeply in their memories. This has become the most unforgettable part of their life. Here are the memories of Zhang Yaping, one of the young urban women who once stayed in Inner Mongolia.  相似文献

Silkworm raising and silk reeling is a great contribution of ancient Chinese women to the world civilization and progress. When the Silk Road opened in the Hah Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago, westerners used to call China the Kingdom of Silk. The gauze dress unearthed from the Mawangdui No. 1 Tomb of the Han Dynasty in Hunan's Changsha, is as thin as cicada's wings and only weighs 49 grams. Made of high quality silk, this dress is as soft and light as the dress made of georgette, revealing the ancient Chinese weaving workers' high skill and talent. It is a silk dress, the earliest and best preserved in the world currently. Also excavated from the same tomb is a mummified woman's body. The woman was the wife of a prime minister of a kingdom  相似文献
