In the aftermath of the Olympic Games, we look back on the highlights for Chinese women. Outstanding performances by the athletes thrilled audiences across the country. Chinese athletes did remarkably well, winning 28 gold medals for the country; there were not a few female athletes among them, who picke up a total of 16 golds. This issue features the Chinese women gold medalists as a mark of respect and to say that we, as women ourselves, are extremely proud of them.

The year 2010 is the last year of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development as well as the final year of the 2001-2010 Program for Women and Children. In addition, this year marks the centenary of the International Working Women＇s Day. We will continue to take the Scientific Outlook on Development as our guide, diligently serve the overall interests of the country, serve women and serve local branches of the All-China Women＇s Federation and strive to open up new prospects for programs to help women.

China will establish this year＇s health files for at least 20 percent of rural residents, and will give priority to women, children and seniors, Deng Haihua, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, told a recent news conference. Deng said the ministry began, in 2007, to establish rural family health files in 13 counties nationwide as part of the country＇s medical service system reform. ＂Standard electronic documents will replace conventional paper documentation throughout the country,＂ Deng added. ＂We, and the Ministry of Civil Affairs （MCA）, have also made efforts to improve medical security for children suffering from congenital heart disease and leukemia. New rural cooperative medical insurance and the MCA medical allowance now cover 90 percent of these patients＇ treatment fees,＂ Deng added.     

China and Sweden Compare Women's Development

WHEN China opens its doors to the outside world, fresh air comes in. So do flies. While drug addicts were unknown in China for 30 years, there are now reports of drug users and their related crimes. In an effort to abolish drug abuse in China, rehabilitation centers are being set up throughout the country to give medical aid to drug users trying to kick the habit. Chinese Nation Joins in Jubilation for Hong Kong's Return

On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong finally returns to the motherland. July 1 was a day of Chinese national pride. Looking back, Hong Kong experienced great changes and the Chinese nation was subjected to humiliation during the 156 years. The Chinese nation had expected and made unremitting efforts to become stronger for more than 100 years. After resuming sovereignty over Hong Kong, the Chinese government will bring a brighter future to Hong Kong under the policies of "one country, two systems," and "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong, with a high degree of autonomy."
