Migration to Britain: the significance of a historical approach

The author discusses migration to Great Britain since 1945, with a focus on the importance of taking a historical approach in order to understand long-held assumptions regarding migration from the British Caribbean and the Indian subcontinent. Causes and consequences of non-European migrants being considered members of distinct and inferior races are analyzed. The author concludes that "when seeking to explain the nature and significance of racism in contemporary Europe, we might usefully begin by focussing on the processes involved in the construction and reproduction of the Nation-State...." The population dynamics of black-white-mulatto racial systems

Building on Preston and Campbell's two-sex model of intergenerational transmission, this article provides a theoretical analysis of the dynamics of the racial distribution in black-white-mulatto systems. The author shows that "bounded" patterns of racial classification and switching imply long-run racial homogeneity in the absence of differential reproduction. Beyond the theoretical analysis, the author attempts to account for the dramatic growth of the white population share in Puerto Rico in the early 20th century. Because the effects of racial classification and differential reproduction were roughly offsetting, the observed growth of the white share can be attributed almost entirely to racial switching.     

Fashioning Males and Females: Appearance Management and the Social Reproduction of Gender

The author examines the part played by appearance management in both the intergenerational and everyday reproduction of gendered identities in contemporary American society. The author empirically explores the contributions of appearance management to young children's gender socialization by drawing upon observation in preschools, informal interviews with children's parents, as well as others' observations and findings. That analysis indicates that sex-class related appearance management invests infants with gendered identities, promotes children's sex-class related identification of others, and encourages them to embrace behaviorally their own ascribed sex-class identities. Sex-class related appearance management is of fundamental importance to both the intergenerational and interactional reproduction of the seemingly natural and moral order of gendered person that characterizes our society.     

Personnel Development in the Field of Disability with a Focus on Employment Outcomes

The author discusses the key considerations for personnel development in the disability field with a focus on employment outcomes. The author emphasizes the role of support and facilitation by rehabilitation personnel as structures for inclusion. He discusses the fact that disabilities, like learning and change, are lifetime experiences for all of us. Accordingly, comprehensive personnel development must be attentive to the constituencies and the environment. It must be value based. Finally, comprehensive personnel development must address the present and future needs of all constituencies in the field of disability to achieve successful employment outcomes. The author presents the context for an educational framework for rehabilitation personnel. This framework is based on four pillars-formal education, professional certification, continuing education and self-directed learning. The synergistic relationship among these pillars, and the constituency groups provides the framework for effective disability policy and positive employment outcomes for persons with disabilities.     

From Marx to Bonger: Socialist Writings on Women,Gender, and Crime*

Contemporary socialist criminologists concentrate their analysis of crime on production relations, ignoring the co-determination of reproduction and thus the role gender plays in crime by men and women. The author argues that this omission has occurred by reason of the theoretical work of Marx and Engels, as well as other socialist “criminologists” of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The importance of the paper lies in its demonstration that the questions raised by these early socialist theoreticians are inadequate for developing a comprehensive theory of crime.     

Aftercare services

The author discusses the need for postplacement or "aftercare" services for youth leaving placement to live on their own, and explains how a statewide pilot project is helping to meet that need.

With a variety of influences tied to negative body image, it is important that college health professionals create a plan of action for reducing the negative effects of such influences. The author proposes that health professionals take a more active role in combating body image problems by using 3 important strategies: incorporating body image into basic health curricula and classes, focusing research efforts on intervention, and exploring the use of advocacy to initiate change at the societal level.

The author discusses a recent paper published in Nature that shows that a hyperactive allele of the tumor suppressor p53 leads to the development of some premature aging phenotypes in mice. This new discovery is discussed in light of previous findings related to mechanisms of aging.

Social reproduction and the limitations of protest camps: openness and exclusion of social movements in Japan

This paper investigates how activists conduct participatory democracy and realize prefiguration and horizontality in a protest camp setting. Recently, scholars have shown increasing interest in the internal lives of social movements. Anti-G8 direct action in Japan has provided an opportunity to examine how protesters practise prefiguration and horizontality in everyday experiments in alternative ways of living together. In the protest camp in Japan, participants faced institutional and material limitations. This study discusses the social reproduction processes within protest camps that operate according to these limitations. Three key findings emerged: first, the protest camp shows a great openness towards beginners; they can easily find roles in its social reproduction processes. To accomplish this, they use skills developed in their daily habits outside the protest. Second, the collective practice of social reproduction creates and clearly displays a hierarchical partnership between activists, in the sense that beginners are not only politically socialized, but that they learn the limited cultural codes of anti-globalism movements from other activists. The relationship between teaching and taught serves to create hierarchy and exclusion among participants. The third key finding is related to exclusion. For some activists who have experienced discrimination, the protest camp is a frustrating experience because it forces upon them codes and manners constructed in capitalist society. To them, the camp recreates the cleavage between majority and minority protesters. The paper argues that both exclusive and inclusive sides of the protest camps, particularly when discussing collective lifestyle practices, exhibit ambiguity.

The author discusses the underconcentration, particularly in social work’s understanding of the biological and spiritual aspects of human beings. The author also distinguishes the transactional model from other reductionist or interactionist models of human behavior, and addresses ways to implement the model in the classroom.     

On the Ukrainian Cinematic Tradition,the Dovzhenko Film Studio,and Ivan Mykolaichuk

Abstract

This article discusses the Ukrainian cinematic tradition as established by Oleksandr Dovzhenko in the 1920s and 1930s and revived at the Kyiv Film Studio during the short-lived renaissance of Ukrainian cinema between 1964 and 1972. The author focuses on the three figures that led national cinema out of its provincial dead end: the film directors Volodymyr Denysenko and Sergei Paradzhanov, and the actor Ivan Mykolaichuk. The author discusses their films Son [The Dream, 1964] and Tini zabutykh predkiv [Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, 1964] as best representing the turn from theatrical adaptations of literary classics to their creative cinematic rethinking. Mykolaichuk’s acting style matched this new trend perfectly because he was a carrier of the folk tradition that the two directors were seeking to harness for new ways of artistic expression.     

Academic Self‐Efficacy Within a Culture of Modern Racism: The Case of Benita

The author presents a case study that depicts an African American student's experience in her graduate program, as described to a career counselor. The ecological model of career development (E. P. Cook, M. J. Heppner, & K. M. O'Brien, 2002), which addresses both the microsystems and macrosystems levels of analyses, is applied to the case. The author presents proposed interventions for use with the client and discusses potential barriers to effective multicultural career counseling.     

Multiple Perspectives on the Influence of Gender in Online Interactions

As an information and communication technology, the Internet has contributed to structural changes in social life. This technology has opened up new social spaces for people to communicate across time and space, explore interests and interactions, and form and maintain relationships. Gender is a social structure that matters, but how it matters online is a topic that has intrigued researchers for the last 20 years. Research in the area of online gender interactions is multidisciplinary and addresses a variety of online forums including discussion groups, chat, instant messaging, blogs, virtual worlds and social network sites. Patterns are identified in the literature and examples of gender fluidity, gender reproduction, and a blending of gender fluidity and reproduction are presented. This paper provides a framework for understanding the multidisciplinary research on this topic and discusses how changes in online demographics and recent developments in information and communication technologies, such as social network sites, present new forums in which to explore the role of gender in online interactions.     

Response to Bonnie L. Yegidis

This article discusses distance learning techniques used to operationalize the concept of “globalization from below” in a social work methods course. In the E-Mail Partnership Project, one of the major course assignments, students communicate by e-mail to share information and discuss social issues through professional “pen pal” relationships with students overseas. The author reviews the course design, describes the project and its benefits, discusses the technical and cross-cultural issues that emerged throughout, and presents evaluation results Evaluation results suggest that international e-mail communication is one way to infuse international content into the curriculum.     

Supporting English Language Learners in Social Studies: Language-focused Strategies

With the significant enrollment increase of English Language Learners (ELLs) nationwide, social studies teachers face challenges to educate these students. As a response to the literature of preparing all content teachers to work with ELLs, this article introduces three teacher-friendly language-focused strategies. These strategies help social studies teachers to address the linguistic demands in this specific discipline for the purpose of content mastery. The author first discusses the linguistic challenges in social studies and argues that commonly used cognitively based strategies often fail to provide sufficient scaffolding for ELLs. The author then introduces three language-focused strategies with examples.     

The Emergence and Attributes of Second-Generation Community Support Systems for Persons with Serious Mental Illness

Abstract

This paper examines the original model of community support for people coping with psychiatric disabilities and illuminates four emergent factors that are bringing about what the author identifies as second-generation community support systems. The author discusses the important role of recovery in refraining the purpose and aims of second-generation community support systems and draws implications for how case management can function within these systems to make them more responsive to recipients.     

The politics of "disregarding": addressing Zainichi issues within the lesbian community in Japan

This article discusses the difference in positionality between Japanese lesbians and Zainichi (literally, "resident in Japan") Korean lesbians. The author first presents a narrative written by a Zainichi Korean lesbian, in which she expresses her anger toward Japanese lesbians. Setting her narrative as a starting point, the author retraces the controversial incident that occurred during the second Asian Lesbian Network (ALN) conference that was held in Japan in 1992. Through a re-reading of a series of narratives with regard to the second conference, the author demonstrates how the unequal power relations between Japanese lesbians and Zainichi Korean lesbians operate in what she calls the politics of "disregarding," where Zainichi Korean lesbians are continuously omitted from the consciousness of Japanese lesbians. doi:10.1300/ J155v10n03_05.     

Exhaustion in university students and the effect of coursework involvement

Although researchers have examined exhaustion extensively in occupational studies, this work-specific variable--despite its widespread acceptance and negative outcomes--has received little attention in regard to university students and their coursework. OBJECTIVE: The author examined the severity of exhaustion in students and the relationship between the personal/environmental variable of coursework involvement and exhaustion in university students. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred undergraduate business students from a large state university participated in the study. METHOD SUMMARY: The author used results from other exhaustion studies for comparative purpose and correlation and regression analyses to explore the variables of interest. RESULTS: The author found student exhaustion levels to be extreme when compared with those of traditional high-exhaustion occupations. Coursework involvement was a significant predictor of student exhaustion. CONCLUSIONS: The author discusses implications and recommendations for researchers, educators, and health-care providers.
