Gauze Dress and a Mummy

Silkworm raising and silk reeling is a great contribution of ancient Chinese women to the world civilization and progress. When the Silk Road opened in the Hah Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago, westerners used to call China the Kingdom of Silk. The gauze dress unearthed from the Mawangdui No. 1 Tomb of the Han Dynasty in Hunan's Changsha, is as thin as cicada's wings and only weighs 49 grams. Made of high quality silk, this dress is as soft and light as the dress made of georgette, revealing the ancient Chinese weaving workers' high skill and talent. It is a silk dress, the earliest and best preserved in the world currently. Also excavated from the same tomb is a mummified woman's body. The woman was the wife of a prime minister of a kingdom     

Art Appreciation

Modern embossed forged copper has an elegant character. This art form works well as decoration for the walls of buildings. Chen Chuan, the designer, pursues a look of simplicity and powerfulness in his works Auspiciousness and Harmony, which is based on the themes of man and nature. Chen carefully plans the arrangement of convex and concave parts, adding texture by hammering or scraping in many small points and fine lines. With a steel pick, the artist creates a surface sometimes rough and matte, sometimes smooth and shiny. Chen Chuan graduated from the Hubei Institute of Arts in 1965, and was deputy director of the Shandong Provincial Art Gallery from 1984 to 1991. A member of the China Artists Association and the China Graphic Art Association, Chen Chuan is ranked as a first-class artisan, and currently serves as director of the forge copper art office of the Shandong Academy. He has won awards at exhibitions held both at home and abroad.

Dear Women of China, I saw a post on your Weibo account, in which you reported that foreigners who intend to work as teachers in China may face a higher threshold, as employers nationwide will require teachers to have previous teaching experience. I worked as a trainer and head teacher. I wouldn＇t mind if new teachers did not have experience as long they were willing to learn, and as long as they loved the trade. I would never consider the race or place of origin, but only the teaching quality and proper language skills, of a potential teacher.     

Women's Art and Women Artists in Cultural Change

ON March 3rd, 1998, an exhibition titled "Century · Women" drew up its curtain at the China Arts Gallery in Beijing, and attracted a vast number of visitors with its large scale, historical overview, and representation of a great number of painters with various styles. While people strolled in the gallery, a lively forum on the topic of "Visual Angle of Gender: Women's Arts and Women Artists in Cultural Change" was also taking place in Beijing. The purpose of the forum was to corroborate the academic value of the exhibition, as well as to analyze the cultural significance of women's art through the exploration of the history and present situation of Chinese women's art, Over 30 scholars and artists presented speeches on the topic; the audience numbered in the hundreds.
