THE King of Tibet, Songtsan Gambo, was wise and capable. In order to make Tibet prosperous, he planned to marry Princess Wencheng of the Imperial Palace, who was both beautiful and kindhearted. He sent the resourceful Gawa to the Emperor to propose. In order to choose a satisfactory son-in-law among such a great number of suitors, the Emperor asked messengers to take part in a wisdom competition. He first asked the messengers to match the mares with their foals in a large herd. Of all the messengers, Gawa was the only one who passed this test. First he separated the mares from their foals and locked them into two paddocks. After half a day, he released the foals and herded them in with the mares. The hungry foals immediately ran to their mothers to suckle their milk. In this way it was easy to see who belonged to whom. After this test of wit the Emperor gave the messengers two more puzzles. The first one was to ask them to eat an entire sheep in one day, tan its hide, drink a jug of alcohol and walk bac  相似文献

I was born and brought up in Shanghai.Later, to follow my husband, I moved toBeijing. From the start I was impressed bythe courteous way the residents of theformer imperial city addressed people andtheir pleasing speech patterns, with curlingtongue to add an "er" pronunciation to manyof the Chinese words - so different from theflatter speech of Shanghai. Over the years inBeijing, I learned how to mimic the accentand found that the people of the two citiesare interestingly different in many ways. I was accustomed to sharing taxis when Iarrived, for in Shanghai, if you are going inthe same direction, strangers double up forcheaper fares. In the capital, however, it ishard to find someone willing to get in ifsomeone is already inside. One weekend,  相似文献

More Pregnancies, Babies in the Year of the Dog 准妈妈狗年扎堆生“狗宝宝” A growing number of women participated in pregnancy examinations in Beijing's health centers for women and children in the weeks leading up to the Year of the Dog. That indicates more babies will be born, compared with recent years, over the next several months. Among the 12 animals (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig) used to symbolize the years in which people are born, Chinese tend to believe the dog has the reputation of being "clever, loyal and reliable." Therefore, many couples hope to have their babies in 2006-the Year of the Dog. However, experts remind prospective parents not to be too superstitious, as the great number of children born in the Year of the Dog will face fierce competition at both school and work when they grow up.  相似文献
