This review considers current and potential uses of ring-recovery and mark-recapture methods for conservation-oriented research by European ringing schemes. These schemes are concerned mainly with large-scale studies of the demography and movements of widespread species, much of the data being gathered by volunteers. The data holdings and data-gathering potential of the 33 European ringing schemes are outlined. Over 110 million birds have been ringed in Europe giving rise to 1.8 million recoveries. Some 64% of these recoveries are held in the computerized EURING data bank. Passerines comprise 43% of all recoveries and only 15% are of waterfowl. Currently, about 4 million birds are ringed each year and 90 000 recoveries are reported. Ringing effort is much higher in northern and western Europe than in southern and eastern Europe. Most schemes have recorded the ringing and recovery details of birds that have been recovered in computer files but most ringing data are held only on paper. These ringing data must be computerized for rigorous analyses of survival or movements. Without such computerization, future widespread ringing will be of little value. Five key areas of conservation-oriented research using data from European ringing schemes are identified; monitoring, investigating the causes of population declines, impacts of hunting, flyway networks and seabird studies. Current work and future research opportunities in these areas are discussed, and conservation priorities are identified. Demographic studies for monitoring and identifying the causes of declines are developing well, and are likely to be enhanced further by more gathering of mark-recapture data from standardized projects (such as constant effort sites), by improved access to computerized ringing data and by the development of more flexible, user-friendly software for ring-recovery analysis. Interest in studies of movements is reviving, with quantitative methods starting to be applied to population turnover at migratory stop-over sites (Jolly-Seber models) and to movements between sites (multi-state models). Future planned ringing studies will be important for testing ideas about the dynamics of meta-populations. European ringing schemes have the opportunity to enhance greatly their contribution to conservation over the next decade. This will require better access to computerized data and the development of more planned, cooperative projects at European and national scales. The close collaboration of biologists and statisticians in the analysis of previously collected data should be extended to the review of existing sampling strategies and to the development of new projects.  相似文献

In one-way ANOVA, most of the pairwise multiple comparison procedures depend on normality assumption of errors. In practice, errors have non-normal distributions so frequently. Therefore, it is very important to develop robust estimators of location and the associated variance under non-normality. In this paper, we consider the estimation of one-way ANOVA model parameters to make pairwise multiple comparisons under short-tailed symmetric (STS) distribution. The classical least squares method is neither efficient nor robust and maximum likelihood estimation technique is problematic in this situation. Modified maximum likelihood (MML) estimation technique gives the opportunity to estimate model parameters in closed forms under non-normal distributions. Hence, the use of MML estimators in the test statistic is proposed for pairwise multiple comparisons under STS distribution. The efficiency and power comparisons of the test statistic based on sample mean, trimmed mean, wave and MML estimators are given and the robustness of the test obtained using these estimators under plausible alternatives and inlier model are examined. It is demonstrated that the test statistic based on MML estimators is efficient and robust and the corresponding test is more powerful and having smallest Type I error.  相似文献

Simes' (1986) improved Bonferroni test is verified by simulations ?to control the α-level when testing the overall homogeneity hypothesis with all pairwise t statistics in a balanced parallel group design. Similarly, this result was found to hold (for practical purposes) in various underlying distributions other than the normal and in some unbalanced designs. To allow the use of step-up procedures based on pairwise t statistics, simulations were used to verify that Simes' test, when applied to testing multiple subset homogeneity hypotheses with pairwise t statistics also keeps the level ? α. Some robustness as above was found here too. Tables of the simulation results are provided and an example of a step-up Hommel-Shaffer type procedure with pairwise comparisons is given.  相似文献

We consider pairwise multiple comparisons and multiple comparisons with a control among mean vectors for high-dimensional data under the multivariate normality. For such cases, the statistics based on the Dempster trace criterion are given, and also their approximate upper percentiles are derived by using the Bonferroni’s inequality. Finally, the accuracy of their approximate values is evaluated by Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

Permutation tests based on medians are examined for pairwise comparison of scale. Tests that have been found in the literature to be effective for comparing scale for two groups are extended to the case of all pairwise comparisons, using the Tukey-type adjustment of Richter and McCann [Multiple comparison of medians using permutation tests. J Mod Appl Stat Methods. 2007;6(2):399–412] to guarantee strong Type I error rate control. Power and Type I error rate estimates are computed using simulated data. A method based on the ratio of deviances performed best and appears to be the best overall test.  相似文献

A sequentially rejective (SR) testing procedure introduced by Holm (1979) and modified (MSR) by Shaffer (1986) is considered for testing all pairwise mean comparisons.For such comparisons, both the SR and MSR methods require that the observed test statistics be ordered and compared, each in turn, to appropriate percentiles on Student's t distribution.For the MSR method these percentiles are based on the maximum number of true null hypotheses remaining at each stage of the sequential procedure, given prior significance at previous stages, A function is developed for determining this number from the number of means being tested and the stage of the test.For a test of all pairwise comparisons, the logical implications which follow the rejection of a null hypothesis renders the MSR procedure uniformly more powerful than the SR procedure.Tables of percentiles for comparing K means, 3 < K < 6, using the MSR method are presented.These tables use Sidak's (1967) multiplicative inequality and simplify the use of t he MSR procedure.Several modifications to the MSR are suggested as a means of further increasing the power for testing the pairwise comparisons.General use of the MSR and the corresponding function for testing other parameters besides the mean is discussed.  相似文献

A fixed effects one-way layout model of analysis of variance is considered where the variances are taken to be possibly unequal. Conservative single-stage procedures based on Banerjee’s method for the solution of the Behrens-Fisher problem are proposed for the following multiple comparisons problems: 1) all pairwise comparisons with a control population mean, and 2) all pairwise comparisons and all linear contrasts among the means. Since these procedures are likely to be very conservative in practice, approximate procedures based on Welch’s method for the solution of the Behrens-Fisher problem are suggested as alternatives. Monte Carlo studies indicate that the latter are much less conservative and hence may be better in practice. Both these sets of procedures need only the tables of the Student’s t-distribution for their application and are very simple to use. Exact two-stage procedures are proposed for the following multiple comparisons problems: 1) all pairwise comparisons and all linear contrasts among the means, and 2) all linear combinations of the means.  相似文献

Two multiple comparisons procedures for determining which of K arbitrarily censored populations differ from each other are proposed. The procedures are based on multiple comparisons using the generalized Wilcoxon and log-rank statistics. The procedures incorporate a pairwise ranking scheme, rather than the joint ranking scheme proposed by Breslow (1970) and Crowley and Thomas (1975). A conservative testing method suggested by an inequality due to ?idák (1967) is given; a numerical example is presented.  相似文献

We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model for multiple comparisons in mixed models where the repeated measures on subjects are described with the subject random effects. The model facilitates inferences in parameterizing the successive differences of the population means, and for them, we choose independent prior distributions that are mixtures of a normal distribution and a discrete distribution with its entire mass at zero. For the other parameters, we choose conjugate or vague priors. The performance of the proposed hierarchical model is investigated in the simulated and two real data sets, and the results illustrate that the proposed hierarchical model can effectively conduct a global test and pairwise comparisons using the posterior probability that any two means are equal. A simulation study is performed to analyze the type I error rate, the familywise error rate, and the test power. The Gibbs sampler procedure is used to estimate the parameters and to calculate the posterior probabilities.  相似文献

Network meta-analysis synthesizes several studies of multiple treatment comparisons to simultaneously provide inference for all treatments in the network. It can often strengthen inference on pairwise comparisons by borrowing evidence from other comparisons in the network. Current network meta-analysis approaches are derived from either conventional pairwise meta-analysis or hierarchical Bayesian methods. This paper introduces a new approach for network meta-analysis by combining confidence distributions (CDs). Instead of combining point estimators from individual studies in the conventional approach, the new approach combines CDs, which contain richer information than point estimators, and thus achieves greater efficiency in its inference. The proposed CD approach can efficiently integrate all studies in the network and provide inference for all treatments, even when individual studies contain only comparisons of subsets of the treatments. Through numerical studies with real and simulated data sets, the proposed approach is shown to outperform or at least equal the traditional pairwise meta-analysis and a commonly used Bayesian hierarchical model. Although the Bayesian approach may yield comparable results with a suitably chosen prior, it is highly sensitive to the choice of priors (especially for the between-trial covariance structure), which is often subjective. The CD approach is a general frequentist approach and is prior-free. Moreover, it can always provide a proper inference for all the treatment effects regardless of the between-trial covariance structure.  相似文献

In this paper, conservative simultaneous confidence intervals for multiple comparisons among mean vectors in multivariate normal distributions are considered. Some properties of the multivariate Tukey–Kramer procedure for pairwise comparisons and the conservative simultaneous confidence procedure for comparisons with a control are presented. Particularly, the upper bound for the conservativeness of the simultaneous confidence procedure for comparisons with a control is obtained. Finally, numerical results by Monte Carlo simulations and an example to illustrate the procedure are given.  相似文献

In problems related to evaluations of products or services (e.g. in customer satisfaction analysis) the main difficulties concern the synthesis of the information, which is necessary for the presence of several evaluators and many response variables (aspects under evaluation). In this article, the problem of determining and comparing the satisfaction of different groups of customers, in the presence of multivariate response variables and using the results of pairwise comparisons is addressed. Within the framework of group ranking methods and multi criteria decision making theory, a new approach, based on nonparametric techniques, for evaluating group satisfaction in a multivariate framework is proposed and the concept of Multivariate Relative Satisfaction is defined. An application to the evaluation of public transport services, like the railway service and the urban bus service, by students of the University of Ferrara (Italy) is also discussed.  相似文献

By their very nature, statistical models are constructed on the basis of a number of simplifying assumptions. It is usual to assume that all the individuals in a 'group' or 'cohort' have similar survival, recovery or reporting probabilities. From a number of earlier studies of the Cape Griffon Gyps coprotheres in southern Africa, it is clear that there have been many violations of these assumptions of homogeneity. To get a better understanding of the process whereby a dead ringed bird is found and reported, an analysis was undertaken of 575 recoveries from 7130 individuals ringed as nestlings. From a series of univariate generalized linear models, it was found that the proportion of ringed birds reported dead varied with the following factors: (1) ring prefix (representing different grades and thicknesses of aluminium): there was considerable variation in reporting rate between cohorts fitted with different ring prefix series used; (2) metal type: birds fitted with monel metal rings were reported at a rate twice that of those bearing aluminium rings; (3) colour rings: recoveries of birds with colour rings were much more likely to be reported than birds with only a metal ring; (4) epoch: the reporting rate has increased steadily from the 1950s through to the mid-1980s. All of these factors are confounded and so a number of multivariate generalized linear models were constructed. It was found that the variations in the cohort-specific reporting rate could be described well by a model including factors for metal-ring type and the presence or absence of colour rings. Using the tougher monel metal ring along with a set of colour rings more than doubles the reporting rate and their continued use is strongly recommended for future studies. The year-to-year variations could be accounted for by this model but the colony of ringing did not enter the model. The models used were based on two assumptions: (i) the reporting rate was constant for all individuals within a given cohort and (ii) the recoveries were complete. It is argued that the results are congruent with these assumptions. There is now a clearer model of the manner in which the ring-recovery reporting process proceeds and this has opened the way to building a more realistic statistical model to estimate survival in the Cape Griffon.  相似文献

This paper compares the five-parameter beta generalized gamma (BGG) distribution to the three-parameter generalized gamma (GG). Both distributions include the four standard hazard shapes that we believe is an important property for any parametric family. For several BGG distributions, we select matching GGs and compute the Kullback-Liebler distance, observing remarkable agreement. We explore the beta parameters' influence on the matched GG parameters, detecting a strong connection between the distributions. Lastly, we compare the distributions using two real-data examples. We conclude from these comparisons that the BGG is not likely to be more useful for analytical purposes than the simpler GG.  相似文献

In this paper, the shape matrix estimators based on spatial sign and rank vectors are considered. The estimators considered here are slight modifications of the estimators introduced in Dümbgen (1998) and Oja and Randles (2004) and further studied for example in Sirkiä et al. (2009). The shape estimators are computed using pairwise differences of the observed data, therefore there is no need to estimate the location center of the data. When the estimator is based on signs, the use of differences also implies that the estimators have the so called independence property if the estimator, that is used as an initial estimator, has it. The influence functions and limiting distributions of the estimators are derived at the multivariate elliptical case. The estimators are shown to be highly efficient in the multinormal case, and for heavy-tailed distributions they outperform the shape estimator based on sample covariance matrix.  相似文献

Two-sample comparisons belonging to basic class of statistical inference are extensively applied in practice. There is a rich statistical literature regarding different parametric methods to address these problems. In this context, most of the powerful techniques are assumed to be based on normally distributed populations. In practice, the alternative distributions of compared samples are commonly unknown. In this case, one can propose a combined test based on the following decision rules: (a) the likelihood-ratio test (LRT) for equality of two normal populations and (b) the Shapiro–Wilk (S-W) test for normality. The rules (a) and (b) can be merged by, e.g., using the Bonferroni correction technique to offer the correct comparison of the samples distribution. Alternatively, we propose the exact density-based empirical likelihood (DBEL) ratio test. We develop the tsc package as the first R package available to perform the two-sample comparisons using the exact test procedures: the LRT; the LRT combined with the S-W test; as well as the newly developed DBEL ratio test. We demonstrate Monte Carlo (MC) results and a real data example to show an efficiency and excellent applicability of the developed procedure.  相似文献

In this research, we propose simultaneous confidence intervals for all pairwise multiple comparisons in a two-way unbalanced design with unequal variances, using a parametric bootstrap approach. Simulation results show that Type 1 error of the multiple comparison test is close to the nominal level even for small samples. They also show that the proposed method outperforms Tukey–Kramer procedure when variances are heteroscedastic and group sizes are unequal.  相似文献

In this paper we give tables for the null distributions of the statistics for the one-sided and two-sided alternatives. Halperin et al. (1988) suggested an approach which allows for k Type I errors while using Scheffe's method of multiple comparisons for linear combinations of p means. In this paper we apply the same type of error control to Tukey's method of multiple pairwise comparisons. In fact, the variant of the Tukey (1953) approach discussed here defines the error control objective as assuring with a specified probability that at most one out of the p(p-l)/2 comparisons between all pairs of the treatment means is significant in two-sided tests when an overall null hypothesis (all p means are equal) is true or, from a confidence interval point of view, that at most one of a set of simultaneous confidence intervals for all of the pairwise differences of the treatment means is incorrect. The formulae which yield the critical values needed to carry out this new procedure are derived and the critical values are tabulated. A Monte Carlo study was conducted and several tables are presented to demonstrate the experimentwise Type I error rates and the gains in power furnished by the proposed procedure  相似文献
