Teaching psychology to social workers: Dilemmas of programme design

The discipline of psychology can be defined by specifying its content. This can be done by listing its various sub-disciplines. Such a listing provides the basis for examining some of the dilemmas associated with choice of content and the depth to which the content is to be taught. Psychology can also be defined as a product of history and a history that has taken place in a certain cultural context. The dominant context has been that of the university which has sought to emphasise the importance of a scientific and empirical approach. The limitations of this approach are identified and discussed along with those of (solely) conceptual approaches that are found in more practical spheres like those of counselling and psychotherapy. Finally relating psychology to other disciplines provides another perspective on its essential nature. With the nature of the discipline in mind some consideration is given to the psychology of learning applied psychology.

Women and health: female circumcision

Documented cases of female circumcision are reported for Malaysia, Indonesia, East and West Africa. Infibulation is reported for East and West Africa. A specific village listing is provided. Female circumcision as practised in African villages is designed to reduce sexual enjoyment. Those girls who refuse the operation are often ostracized. Sunna circumcision, the cutting of the prepuce of the clitoris, is performed with razor blades and knives by old women. In some areas cuts in the vagina are made to make childbearing easier. The result is the opposite. Moslems perform infibulation (fastening the labia majora together) to insure virginity and paternity. In Kenya defenders of the practise of clitoridectomy say its opposers are viewing the situation emotionally from a Western perspective. Changes are typically resisted by men, especially if they are perceived as being determined by outsiders.

Less assessment and more suggestions please: Factors contributing to effective supervision of counsellors at different experience levels

Abstract

Twenty-two supervisors and 60 supervisees working in community counselling services in Melbourne were asked to rate the importance of 46 supervisory behaviours to good supervision, as well as listing behaviours that contribute to and detract from good supervision. In general, supervisors saw good supervision as relating primarily to feedback to the supervisee, while supervisees were interested in learning new skills and gaining assistance with conceptualisation in supervision. The responses confirmed evidence of differing supervisee and supervisor perceptions of supervision seen in previous research of students' supervisory needs in America.

Differences in responses from supervisees in this sample to the American sample suggest some cultural differences and some differing needs attributable to different levels of experience. Responses in the current research support a developmental model of supervision; that supervisees have different needs as they gain experience. Applying a process model to behaviours believed to contribute to and detract from good supervision revealed that the bulk of responsibility for a good supervisory relationship is attributed to supervisors. Neither supervisors nor supervisees indicated a high level of supervisee qualities and skills that contribute to good supervision. This has obvious training implications.     

A Model for Developing and Managing Distance Education Programs Using Interactive Video Technology

Based on two years of experience with a distance MSW program, the authors present an evolving model for the development, management, and evaluation of distance education graduate programs that use interactive video technology. The model includes five core components: (a) accreditation standards compliance, (b) resource requirements, (c) curriculum adaptation, (d) faculty development, and (e) program evaluation. While not an exhaustive listing, these components are advanced as central to the effective planning and administration of distance education programs in social work.     

Field research and word processor files: A technical note

Doing field research means storing and sorting great volumes of fieldnotes. A micro word processor (WP) can reduce all of this paper to a few disks. The process of setting up files, marking subfiles, listing files in a directory, and calling up files in old and new arrangements requires some knowledge of WP limits and techniques. This note outlines the process, the limits, and the questions one must ask about how to run a specific WP system in order to use it fully. The note ends with two cautions. The cost of computer supplies may deter unfunded workers, especially those with access to free typing materials or labor. More crucial, planning for files may tempt an over-hasty researcher to define theory categories prematurely.     

On the measurement of unemployment

This paper investigates how alternative measures of unemployment may be derived from information on unemployment duration. It begins by listing various properties that unemployment indices should satisfy, and shows how ‘duration profiles’ can usefully represent unemployment data. Theorem 1 establishes that unemployment indices are unanimous iff the duration profiles do not intersect. Two families of unemployment indices are examined in detail. Both allow unemployment to be decomposed across population subgroups. In addition, they can be expressed as the product of three components reflecting the contributions of the unemployment rate, mean unemployment duration, and differences in duration among the unemployed.
