You probably already know that China boasts of spectacular mountains, and may have heard of the famous Dunhuang caves with Buddhist paintings, but you may not know about China's amazing karst caves. In Southern China's Guizhou Province is a national scenic place called Zhijin Cave.

Dear Women of China Thank you for a wonderful September issue. The cover photo was both sad and uplifting. I was drawn by the little boy＇s determined face and the title mentioning Zhouqu. I knew it had to be some kind,of disaster, and reading about the relief efforts and the people affected was touching. In the past two years, China has seen quite a few natural disasters. I wonder what may have caused these problems to begin with. I hope that the people in China will have safer futures.     

The World of the Little Painters

Agroup of little painters, aged three to twelve, paint actively in the study office for children's paintings of the Children's and Women's Activity Center of Hunan Province. They come from ordinary families, and all of them have gone through a period of scrawling, but they have become extraordinary artists. Children here never imitate other people's paintings; nor would I want them to. As their teacher, I encourage them to observe the world and     

Warm Breeze

Middle-aged female painter Wang Yingchun is a first-grade artist at the Research Instituteof Chinese Painting. With a solid foundation in: Chinese painting, oil painting andsculpture she began to experiment in the early 1980s with stone carving, murals, folkart, landscapes, flowers and birds, cubism, expressionism and abstractionism. Living ina time of social transformation, she felt pressed to create her own artistic style. Aftervisiting South America, she produced a batch of works which drew the essence of theBeast Group and used a new technique, without sketching the contours of flowers, sothat the paintings look wild, romantic and exuberant. This painting Warm Breeze displaysWang's style: While extensively studying the paintings of various schools, she makes hertraditional Chinese ink paintings tinted with modern color.     

Art Appreciation

These paintings display the high degree of skill required by Chinese painters. The paintings shown here demonstrate the painter's skill in using line and color. On the basis of tradition, he has created something new. The painter, Jin Hongiun, traveled to the tropical forests of southern China a number of times in recent years to

I＇ll be working in China for the next few years and I＇d like to bring my dog, Copper, with me. He＇s a full-grown golden retriever and he weighs 72 pounds. Dear Women of China, I＇ve had the pleasure of having dinner with my Chinese girlfriend＇s family a few times in the past, but each time they urged me to drink lots of alcohol. I understand that it＇s their way of welcoming and encouraging me to feel comfortable around them, but I＇m not very fond of drinking. However, every time I try to refuse a drink, they keep insisting that I drink anyway, until I give up trying to convince them. Now, I＇m uneasy about having more dinners with them.
