In a graph \(G=(V,E)\), a set \(D \subseteq V\) is said to be a dominating set of G if for every vertex \(u\in V{\setminus }D\), there exists a vertex \(v\in D\) such that \(uv\in E\). A secure dominating set of the graph G is a dominating set D of G such that for every \(u\in V{\setminus }D\), there exists a vertex \(v\in D\) such that \(uv\in E\) and \((D{\setminus }\{v\})\cup \{u\}\) is a dominating set of G. Given a graph G and a positive integer k, the secure domination problem is to decide whether G has a secure dominating set of cardinality at most k. The secure domination problem has been shown to be NP-complete for chordal graphs via split graphs and for bipartite graphs. In Liu et al. (in: Proceedings of 27th workshop on combinatorial mathematics and computation theory, 2010), it is asked to find a polynomial time algorithm for computing a minimum secure dominating set in a block graph. In this paper, we answer this by presenting a linear time algorithm to compute a minimum secure dominating set in block graphs. We then strengthen the known NP-completeness of the secure domination problem by showing that the secure domination problem is NP-complete for undirected path graphs and chordal bipartite graphs.  相似文献

For a fixed integer \(b>1\), a set \(D\subseteq V\) is called a b-disjunctive dominating set of the graph \(G=(V,E)\) if for every vertex \(v\in V{\setminus }D\), v is either adjacent to a vertex of D or has at least b vertices in D at distance 2 from it. The Minimum b-Disjunctive Domination Problem (MbDDP) is to find a b-disjunctive dominating set of minimum cardinality. The cardinality of a minimum b-disjunctive dominating set of G is called the b-disjunctive domination number of G, and is denoted by \(\gamma _{b}^{d}(G)\). Given a positive integer k and a graph G, the b-Disjunctive Domination Decision Problem (bDDDP) is to decide whether G has a b-disjunctive dominating set of cardinality at most k. In this paper, we first show that for a proper interval graph G, \(\gamma _{b}^{d}(G)\) is equal to \(\gamma (G)\), the domination number of G for \(b \ge 3\) and observe that \(\gamma _{b}^{d}(G)\) need not be equal to \(\gamma (G)\) for \(b=2\). We then propose a polynomial time algorithm to compute a minimum cardinality b-disjunctive dominating set of a proper interval graph for \(b=2\). Next we tighten the NP-completeness of bDDDP by showing that it remains NP-complete even in chordal graphs. We also propose a \((\ln ({\varDelta }^{2}+(b-1){\varDelta }+b)+1)\)-approximation algorithm for MbDDP, where \({\varDelta }\) is the maximum degree of input graph \(G=(V,E)\) and prove that MbDDP cannot be approximated within \((1-\epsilon ) \ln (|V|)\) for any \(\epsilon >0\) unless NP \(\subseteq \) DTIME\((|V|^{O(\log \log |V|)})\). Finally, we show that MbDDP is APX-complete for bipartite graphs with maximum degree \(\max \{b,4\}\).  相似文献

Let \(\chi _2(G)\) and \(\chi _2^l(G)\) be the 2-distance chromatic number and list 2-distance chromatic number of a graph G, respectively. Wegner conjectured that for each planar graph G with maximum degree \(\varDelta \) at least 4, \(\chi _2(G)\le \varDelta +5\) if \(4\le \varDelta \le 7\), and \(\chi _2(G)\le \lfloor \frac{3\varDelta }{2}\rfloor +1\) if \(\varDelta \ge 8\). Let G be a planar graph without 4,5-cycles. We show that if \(\varDelta \ge 26\), then \(\chi _2^l(G)\le \varDelta +3\). There exist planar graphs G with girth \(g(G)=6\) such that \(\chi _2^l(G)=\varDelta +2\) for arbitrarily large \(\varDelta \). In addition, we also discuss the list L(2, 1)-labeling number of G, and prove that \(\lambda _l(G)\le \varDelta +8\) for \(\varDelta \ge 27\).  相似文献

To save energy and alleviate interference in a wireless sensor network, connected dominating set (CDS) has been proposed as the virtual backbone. Since nodes may fail due to accidental damage or energy depletion, it is desirable to construct a fault tolerant CDS, which can be modeled as a \(k\)-connected \(m\)-fold dominating set \(((k,m)\)-CDS for short): a subset of nodes \(C\subseteq V(G)\) is a \((k,m)\)-CDS of \(G\) if every node in \(V(G)\setminus C\) is adjacent with at least \(m\) nodes in \(C\) and the subgraph of \(G\) induced by \(C\) is \(k\)-connected.In this paper, we present an approximation algorithm for the minimum \((2,m)\)-CDS problem with \(m\ge 2\). Based on a \((1,m)\)-CDS, the algorithm greedily merges blocks until the connectivity is raised to two. The most difficult problem in the analysis is that the potential function used in the greedy algorithm is not submodular. By proving that an optimal solution has a specific decomposition, we managed to prove that the approximation ratio is \(\alpha +2(1+\ln \alpha )\), where \(\alpha \) is the approximation ratio for the minimum \((1,m)\)-CDS problem. This improves on previous approximation ratios for the minimum \((2,m)\)-CDS problem, both in general graphs and in unit disk graphs.  相似文献

Given a graph \(G=(V, E)\), a \(P_2\)-packing \(\mathcal {P}\) is a collection of vertex disjoint copies of \(P_2\)s in \(G\) where a \(P_2\) is a simple path with three vertices and two edges. The Maximum \(P_2\)-Packing problem is to find a \(P_2\)-packing \(\mathcal {P}\) in the input graph \(G\) of maximum cardinality. This problem is NP-hard for cubic graphs. In this paper, we give a branch-and-reduce algorithm for the Maximum \(P_2\)-Packing problem in cubic graphs. We analyze the running time of the algorithm using measure-and-conquer and show that it runs in time \(O^{*}(1.4366^n)\) which is faster than previous known exact algorithms where \(n\) is the number of vertices in the input graph.  相似文献

In the study of computer science, optimization, computation of Hessians matrix, graph coloring is an important tool. In this paper, we consider a classical coloring, total coloring. Let \(G=(V,E)\) be a graph. Total coloring is a coloring of \(V\cup {E}\) such that no two adjacent or incident elements (vertex/edge) receive the same color. Let G be a planar graph with \(\varDelta \ge 8\). We proved that if for every vertex \(v\in V\), there exists two integers \(i_v,j_v\in \{3,4,5,6,7\}\) such that v is not incident with adjacent \(i_v\)-cycles and \(j_v\)-cycles, then the total chromatic number of graph G is \(\varDelta +1\).  相似文献

A complete graph is the graph in which every two vertices are adjacent. For a graph \(G=(V,E)\), the complete width of G is the minimum k such that there exist k independent sets \(\mathtt {N}_i\subseteq V\), \(1\le i\le k\), such that the graph \(G'\) obtained from G by adding some new edges between certain vertices inside the sets \(\mathtt {N}_i\), \(1\le i\le k\), is a complete graph. The complete width problem is to decide whether the complete width of a given graph is at most k or not. In this paper we study the complete width problem. We show that the complete width problem is NP-complete on \(3K_2\)-free bipartite graphs and polynomially solvable on \(2K_2\)-free bipartite graphs and on \((2K_2,C_4)\)-free graphs. As a by-product, we obtain the following new results: the edge clique cover problem is NP-complete on \(\overline{3K_2}\)-free co-bipartite graphs and polynomially solvable on \(C_4\)-free co-bipartite graphs and on \((2K_2, C_4)\)-free graphs. We also give a characterization for k-probe complete graphs which implies that the complete width problem admits a kernel of at most \(2^k\) vertices. This provides another proof for the known fact that the edge clique cover problem admits a kernel of at most \(2^k\) vertices. Finally we determine all graphs of small complete width \(k\le 3\).  相似文献

Let \(G = (V;E)\) be a simple graph with vertex set \(V\) and edge set \(E\). A signed mixed Roman dominating function (SMRDF) of \(G\) is a function \(f: V\cup E\rightarrow \{-1,1,2\}\) satisfying the conditions that (i) \(\sum _{y\in N_m[x]}f(y)\ge 1\) for each \(x\in V\cup E\), where \(N_m[x]\) is the set, called mixed closed neighborhood of \(x\), consists of \(x\) and the elements of \(V\cup E\) adjacent or incident to \(x\) (ii) every element \(x\in V\cup E\) for which \(f(x) = -1\) is adjacent or incident to at least one element \(y\in V\cup E\) for which \(f(y) = 2\). The weight of a SMRDF \(f\) is \(\omega (f)=\sum _{x\in V\cup E}f(x)\). The signed mixed Roman domination number \(\gamma _{sR}^*(G)\) of \(G\) is the minimum weight of a SMRDF of \(G\). In this paper we initiate the study of the signed mixed Roman domination number and we present bounds for this parameter. In particular, we determine this parameter for some classes of graphs.  相似文献

A partition of the vertex set V(G) of a graph G into \(V(G)=V_1\cup V_2\cup \cdots \cup V_k\) is called a k-strong subcoloring if \(d(x,y)\ne 2\) in G for every \(x,y\in V_i\), \(1\le i \le k\) where d(xy) denotes the length of a shortest x-y path in G. The strong subchromatic number is defined as \(\chi _{sc}(G)=\text {min}\{ k:G \text { admits a }k\)-\(\text {strong subcoloring}\}\). In this paper, we explore the complexity status of the StrongSubcoloring problem: for a given graph G and a positive integer k, StrongSubcoloring is to decide whether G admits a k-strong subcoloring. We prove that StrongSubcoloring is NP-complete for subcubic bipartite graphs and the problem is polynomial time solvable for trees. In addition, we prove the following dichotomy results: (i) for the class of \(K_{1,r}\)-free split graphs, StrongSubcoloring is in P when \(r\le 3\) and NP-complete when \(r>3\) and (ii) for the class of H-free graphs, StrongSubcoloring is polynomial time solvable only if H is an induced subgraph of \(P_4\); otherwise the problem is NP-complete. Next, we consider a lower bound on the strong subchromatic number. A strong set is a set S of vertices of a graph G such that for every \(x,y\in S\), \(d(x,y)= 2\) in G and the cardinality of a maximum strong set in G is denoted by \(\alpha _{s}(G)\). Clearly, \(\alpha _{s}(G)\le \chi _{sc}(G)\). We consider the complexity status of the StrongSet problem: given a graph G and a positive integer k, StrongSet asks whether G contains a strong set of cardinality k. We prove that StrongSet is NP-complete for (i) bipartite graphs and (ii) \(K_{1,4}\)-free split graphs, and it is polynomial time solvable for (i) trees and (ii) \(P_4\)-free graphs.  相似文献

Let \(G=(V,E)\) be a graph and \(\phi \) be a total \(k\)-coloring of \(G\) using the color set \(\{1,\ldots , k\}\). Let \(\sum _\phi (u)\) denote the sum of the color of the vertex \(u\) and the colors of all incident edges of \(u\). A \(k\)-neighbor sum distinguishing total coloring of \(G\) is a total \(k\)-coloring of \(G\) such that for each edge \(uv\in E(G)\), \(\sum _\phi (u)\ne \sum _\phi (v)\). By \(\chi ^{''}_{nsd}(G)\), we denote the smallest value \(k\) in such a coloring of \(G\). Pil?niak and Wo?niak first introduced this coloring and conjectured that \(\chi _{nsd}^{''}(G)\le \Delta (G)+3\) for any simple graph \(G\). In this paper, we prove that the conjecture holds for planar graphs without intersecting triangles with \(\Delta (G)\ge 7\). Moreover, we also show that \(\chi _{nsd}^{''}(G)\le \Delta (G)+2\) for planar graphs without intersecting triangles with \(\Delta (G) \ge 9\). Our approach is based on the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz and the discharging method.  相似文献

For \(S\subseteq G\), let \(\kappa (S)\) denote the maximum number r of edge-disjoint trees \(T_1, T_2, \ldots , T_r\) in G such that \(V(T_i)\cap V(T_j)=S\) for any \(i,j\in \{1,2,\ldots ,r\}\) and \(i\ne j\). For every \(2\le k\le n\), the k-connectivity of G, denoted by \(\kappa _k(G)\), is defined as \(\kappa _k(G)=\hbox {min}\{\kappa (S)| S\subseteq V(G)\ and\ |S|=k\}\). Clearly, \(\kappa _2(G)\) corresponds to the traditional connectivity of G. In this paper, we focus on the structure of minimally 2-connected graphs with \(\kappa _{3}=2\). Denote by \(\mathcal {H}\) the set of minimally 2-connected graphs with \(\kappa _{3}=2\). Let \(\mathcal {B}\subseteq \mathcal {H}\) and every graph in \(\mathcal {B}\) is either \(K_{2,3}\) or the graph obtained by subdividing each edge of a triangle-free 3-connected graph. We obtain that \(H\in \mathcal {H}\) if and only if \(H\in \mathcal {B}\) or H can be constructed from one or some graphs \(H_{1},\ldots ,H_{k}\) in \(\mathcal {B}\) (\(k\ge 1\)) by applying some operations recursively.  相似文献

In the prize-collecting travelling salesman problem, we are given a weighted graph \(G=(V,E)\) with edge weights \(\ell :E\rightarrow \mathbb {R}_+\), a special vertex \(r\in V\), penalties \(\pi :V\rightarrow \mathbb {R}_+\) and the goal is to find a closed tour \(T\) such that \(r\in V(T)\) and such that the cost \(\ell (T)+\pi (V\setminus V(T))\), which is the sum of the edges in the tour and the cost of the vertices not spanned by \(T\), is minimized. We consider an online variant of the prize-collecting travelling salesman problem related to graph exploration. In the Canadian Tour Operator Problem the task is to find a closed route for a tourist bus in a given network \(G=(V,E)\) in which some edges are blocked by avalanches. An online algorithm learns from a blocked edge only when reaching one of its endpoints. The bus operator has the option to avoid visiting each node \(v\in V\) by paying a refund of \(\pi (v)\) to the tourists. The goal consists of minimizing the sum of the travel costs and the refunds. We study the problem on a simple (weighted) path and prove tight bounds on the competitiveness of deterministic algorithms. Specifically, we give an algorithm with competitive ratio equal to the golden ratio \(\phi =(1+\sqrt{5})/2\). We also study the effect of resource augmentation, where the online algorithm either pays a discounted cost for traversing edges or for the penalties.  相似文献

The problem of minimum number of choosability of graphs was first introduced by Vizing. It appears in some practical problems when concerning frequency assignment. In this paper, we study two important list coloring, list edge coloring and list total coloring. We prove that \(\chi '_{l}(G)=\varDelta \) and \(\chi ''_{l}(G)=\varDelta +1\) for planar graphs with \(\varDelta \ge 8\) and without adjacent 4-cycles.  相似文献

Data aggregation is an essential yet time-consuming task in wireless sensor networks. This paper studies the well-known minimum-latency aggregation schedule problem and proposes an energy-efficient distributed scheduling algorithm named Clu-DDAS based on a novel cluster-based aggregation tree. Our approach differs from all the previous schemes where connected dominating sets or maximal independent sets are employed. This paper proves that Clu-DDAS has a latency bound of \(4R'+2 \varDelta -2\), where \(\varDelta \) is the maximum degree and \(R'\) is the inferior network radius which is smaller than the network radius \(R\). Our experiments show that Clu-DDAS has an approximate latency upper bound of \(4R'+1.085 \varDelta -2\) with increased \(\varDelta \). Clu-DDAS has comparable latency as the previously best centralized algorithm, E-PAS, but consumes 78 % less energy as shown by the simulation results. Clu-DDAS outperforms the previously best distributed algorithm, DAS, whose latency bound is \(16R'+\varDelta -14\) on both latency and energy consumption. On average, Clu-DDAS transmits 67 % fewer total messages than DAS. The paper also proposes an adaptive strategy for updating the schedule to accommodate dynamic network topology.  相似文献

A \(k\)-connected (resp. \(k\)-edge connected) dominating set \(D\) of a connected graph \(G\) is a subset of \(V(G)\) such that \(G[D]\) is \(k\)-connected (resp. \(k\)-edge connected) and each \(v\in V(G)\backslash D\) has at least one neighbor in \(D\). The \(k\) -connected domination number (resp. \(k\) -edge connected domination number) of a graph \(G\) is the minimum size of a \(k\)-connected (resp. \(k\)-edge connected) dominating set of \(G\), and denoted by \(\gamma _k(G)\) (resp. \(\gamma '_k(G)\)). In this paper, we investigate the relation of independence number and 2-connected (resp. 2-edge-connected) domination number, and prove that for a graph \(G\), if it is \(2\)-edge connected, then \(\gamma '_2(G)\le 4\alpha (G)-1\), and it is \(2\)-connected, then \(\gamma _2(G)\le 6\alpha (G)-3\), where \(\alpha (G)\) is the independent number of \(G\).  相似文献

Based on the power observation rules, the problem of monitoring a power utility network can be transformed into the graph-theoretic power domination problem, which is an extension of the well-known domination problem. A set \(S\) is a power dominating set (PDS) of a graph \(G=(V,E)\) if every vertex \(v\) in \(V\) can be observed under the following two observation rules: (1) \(v\) is dominated by \(S\), i.e., \(v \in S\) or \(v\) has a neighbor in \(S\); and (2) one of \(v\)’s neighbors, say \(u\), and all of \(u\)’s neighbors, except \(v\), can be observed. The power domination problem involves finding a PDS with the minimum cardinality in a graph. Similar to message passing protocols, a PDS can be considered as a dominating set with propagation that applies the second rule iteratively. This study investigates a generalized power domination problem, which limits the number of propagation iterations to a given positive integer; that is, the second rule is applied synchronously with a bounded time constraint. To solve the problem in block graphs, we propose a linear time algorithm that uses a labeling approach. In addition, based on the concept of time constraints, we provide the first nontrivial lower bound for the power domination problem.  相似文献

A signed total Roman dominating function (STRDF) on a graph \(G\) is a function \(f:V(G)\rightarrow \{-1,1,2\}\) satisfying the conditions that (i) \(\sum _{x\in N(v)}f(x)\ge 1\) for each vertex \(v\in V(G)\), where \(N(v)\) is the neighborhood of \(v\), and (ii) every vertex \(u\) for which \(f(u)=-1\) is adjacent to at least one vertex \(v\) for which \(f(v)=2\). The weight of an SRTDF \(f\) is \(\sum _{v\in V(G)}f(v)\). The signed total Roman domination number \(\gamma _{stR}(G)\) of \(G\) is the minimum weight of an STRDF on \(G\). In this paper we initiate the study of the signed total Roman domination number of graphs, and we present different bounds on \(\gamma _{stR}(G)\). This paper studies the continuous connected 2-facility location problem (CC2FLP) in trees. Let \(T = (V, E, c, d, \ell , \mu )\) be an undirected rooted tree, where each node \(v \in V\) has a weight \(d(v) \ge 0\) denoting the demand amount of v as well as a weight \(\ell (v) \ge 0\) denoting the cost of opening a facility at v, and each edge \(e \in E\) has a weight \(c(e) \ge 0\) denoting the cost on e and is associated with a function \(\mu (e,t) \ge 0\) denoting the cost of opening a facility at a point x(et) on e where t is a continuous variable on e. Given a subset \(\mathcal {D} \subseteq V\) of clients, and a subset \(\mathcal {F} \subseteq \mathcal {P}(T)\) of continuum points admitting facilities where \(\mathcal {P}(T)\) is the set of all the points on edges of T, when two facilities are installed at a pair of continuum points \(x_1\) and \(x_2\) in \(\mathcal {F}\), the total cost involved in CC2FLP includes three parts: the cost of opening two facilities at \(x_1\) and \(x_2\), K times the cost of connecting \(x_1\) and \(x_2\), and the cost of all the clients in \(\mathcal {D}\) connecting to some facility. The objective is to open two facilities at a pair of continuum points in \(\mathcal {F}\) to minimize the total cost, for a given input parameter \(K \ge 1\). This paper focuses on the case of \(\mathcal {D} = V\) and \(\mathcal {F} = \mathcal {P}(T)\). We first study the discrete version of CC2FLP, named the discrete connected 2-facility location problem (DC2FLP), where two facilities are restricted to the nodes of T, and devise a quadratic time edge-splitting algorithm for DC2FLP. Furthermore, we prove that CC2FLP is almost equivalent to DC2FLP in trees, and develop a quadratic time exact algorithm based on the edge-splitting algorithm. Finally, we adapt our algorithms to the general case of \(\mathcal {D} \subseteq V\) and \(\mathcal {F} \subseteq \mathcal {P}(T)\).  相似文献

Given a graph \(G=(V,E,D,W)\), the generalized covering salesman problem (CSP) is to find a shortest tour in G such that each vertex \(i\in D\) is either on the tour or within a predetermined distance L to an arbitrary vertex \(j\in W\) on the tour, where \(D\subset V\),\(W\subset V\). In this paper, we propose the online CSP, where the salesman will encounter at most k blocked edges during the traversal. The edge blockages are real-time, meaning that the salesman knows about a blocked edge when it occurs. We present a lower bound \(\frac{1}{1 + (k + 2)L}k+1\) and a CoverTreeTraversal algorithm for online CSP which is proved to be \(k+\alpha \)-competitive, where \(\alpha =0.5+\frac{(4k+2)L}{OPT}+2\gamma \rho \), \(\gamma \) is the approximation ratio for Steiner tree problem and \(\rho \) is the maximal number of locations that a customer can be served. When \(\frac{L}{\texttt {OPT}}\rightarrow 0\), our algorithm is near optimal. The problem is also extended to the version with service cost, and similar results are derived.  相似文献
