Given a set of \(n\) sensors, the strong minimum energy topology (SMET) problem in a wireless sensor network is to assign transmit powers to all sensors such that (i) the graph induced only using the bi-directional links is connected, that is, there is a path between every pair of sensors, and (ii) the sum of the transmit powers of all the sensors is minimum. This problem is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we study a special case of the SMET problem, namely , the \(k\)-strong minimum energy hierarchical topology (\(k\)-SMEHT) problem. Given a set of \(n\) sensors and an integer \(k\), the \(k\)-SMEHT problem is to assign transmission powers to all sensors such that (i) the graph induced using only bi-directional links is connected, (ii) at most \(k\) nodes of the graph induced using only bi-directional links have two or more neighbors, that is they are non-pendant nodes, and (iii) the sum of the transmit powers of all the sensors in \(G\) is minimum. We show that \(k\)-SMEHT problem is NP-hard for arbitrary \(k\). However, we propose a \(\frac{k+1}{2}\)-approximation algorithm for \(k\)-SMEHT problem, when \(k\) is a fixed constant. Finally, we propose a polynomial time algorithm for the \(k\)-SMEHT problem for \(k=2\).  相似文献

In this paper we give improved approximation algorithms for some network design problems. In the bounded-diameter or shallow-light \(k\)-Steiner tree problem (SL\(k\)ST), we are given an undirected graph \(G=(V,E)\) with terminals \(T\subseteq V\) containing a root \(r\in T\), a cost function \(c:E\rightarrow \mathbb {R}^+\), a length function \(\ell :E\rightarrow \mathbb {R}^+\), a bound \(L>0\) and an integer \(k\ge 1\). The goal is to find a minimum \(c\)-cost \(r\)-rooted Steiner tree containing at least \(k\) terminals whose diameter under \(\ell \) metric is at most \(L\). The input to the buy-at-bulk \(k\)-Steiner tree problem (BB\(k\)ST) is similar: graph \(G=(V,E)\), terminals \(T\subseteq V\) containing a root \(r\in T\), cost and length functions \(c,\ell :E\rightarrow \mathbb {R}^+\), and an integer \(k\ge 1\). The goal is to find a minimum total cost \(r\)-rooted Steiner tree \(H\) containing at least \(k\) terminals, where the cost of each edge \(e\) is \(c(e)+\ell (e)\cdot f(e)\) where \(f(e)\) denotes the number of terminals whose path to root in \(H\) contains edge \(e\). We present a bicriteria \((O(\log ^2 n),O(\log n))\)-approximation for SL\(k\)ST: the algorithm finds a \(k\)-Steiner tree with cost at most \(O(\log ^2 n\cdot \text{ opt }^*)\) where \(\text{ opt }^*\) is the cost of an LP relaxation of the problem and diameter at most \(O(L\cdot \log n)\). This improves on the algorithm of Hajiaghayi et al. (2009) (APPROX’06/Algorithmica’09) which had ratio \((O(\log ^4 n), O(\log ^2 n))\). Using this, we obtain an \(O(\log ^3 n)\)-approximation for BB\(k\)ST, which improves upon the \(O(\log ^4 n)\)-approximation of Hajiaghayi et al. (2009). We also consider the problem of finding a minimum cost \(2\)-edge-connected subgraph with at least \(k\) vertices, which is introduced as the \((k,2)\)-subgraph problem in Lau et al. (2009) (STOC’07/SICOMP09). This generalizes some well-studied classical problems such as the \(k\)-MST and the minimum cost \(2\)-edge-connected subgraph problems. We give an \(O(\log n)\)-approximation algorithm for this problem which improves upon the \(O(\log ^2 n)\)-approximation algorithm of Lau et al. (2009).  相似文献

A \(k\)-connected (resp. \(k\)-edge connected) dominating set \(D\) of a connected graph \(G\) is a subset of \(V(G)\) such that \(G[D]\) is \(k\)-connected (resp. \(k\)-edge connected) and each \(v\in V(G)\backslash D\) has at least one neighbor in \(D\). The \(k\) -connected domination number (resp. \(k\) -edge connected domination number) of a graph \(G\) is the minimum size of a \(k\)-connected (resp. \(k\)-edge connected) dominating set of \(G\), and denoted by \(\gamma _k(G)\) (resp. \(\gamma '_k(G)\)). In this paper, we investigate the relation of independence number and 2-connected (resp. 2-edge-connected) domination number, and prove that for a graph \(G\), if it is \(2\)-edge connected, then \(\gamma '_2(G)\le 4\alpha (G)-1\), and it is \(2\)-connected, then \(\gamma _2(G)\le 6\alpha (G)-3\), where \(\alpha (G)\) is the independent number of \(G\).  相似文献

This paper investigates the MINimum-length-\(k\)-Disjoint-Paths (MIN-\(k\)-DP) problem: in a sensor network, given two nodes \(s\) and \(t\), a positive integer \(k\), finding \(k\) (node) disjoint paths connecting \(s\) and \(t\) with minimum total length. An efficient distributed algorithm named Optimally-Finding-Disjoint-Paths (OFDP) is proposed for this problem. OFDP guarantees correctness and optimality, i.e., (1) it will find \(k\) disjoint paths if there exist \(k\) disjoint paths in the network or the maximum number of disjoint paths otherwise; (2) the disjoint paths it outputs do have minimum total length. To the best of our knowledge, OFDP is the first distributed algorithm that can solve the MIN-\(k\)-DP problem with correctness and optimality guarantee. Compared with the existing centralized algorithms which also guarantee correctness and optimality, OFDP is shown to be much more efficient by simulation results.  相似文献

To save energy and alleviate interference in a wireless sensor network, connected dominating set (CDS) has been proposed as the virtual backbone. Since nodes may fail due to accidental damage or energy depletion, it is desirable to construct a fault tolerant CDS, which can be modeled as a \(k\)-connected \(m\)-fold dominating set \(((k,m)\)-CDS for short): a subset of nodes \(C\subseteq V(G)\) is a \((k,m)\)-CDS of \(G\) if every node in \(V(G)\setminus C\) is adjacent with at least \(m\) nodes in \(C\) and the subgraph of \(G\) induced by \(C\) is \(k\)-connected.In this paper, we present an approximation algorithm for the minimum \((2,m)\)-CDS problem with \(m\ge 2\). Based on a \((1,m)\)-CDS, the algorithm greedily merges blocks until the connectivity is raised to two. The most difficult problem in the analysis is that the potential function used in the greedy algorithm is not submodular. By proving that an optimal solution has a specific decomposition, we managed to prove that the approximation ratio is \(\alpha +2(1+\ln \alpha )\), where \(\alpha \) is the approximation ratio for the minimum \((1,m)\)-CDS problem. This improves on previous approximation ratios for the minimum \((2,m)\)-CDS problem, both in general graphs and in unit disk graphs.  相似文献

The \(k\)-distance total domination problem is to find a minimum vertex set \(D\) of a graph such that every vertex of the graph is within distance \(k\) from some vertex of \(D\) other than itself, where \(k\) is a fixed positive integer. In this paper we show that there is a polynomial time algorithm for the strongly planar not-all-equal 3SAT problem. Also, we prove that a restricted version of planar not-all-equal 3SAT is \( \mathbf {NP} \)-complete and in consequence of this result, we show that for a given planar bipartite graph \(G\), deciding whether there is a vertex-labeling by gap from \(\{1,2\}\) such that the induced proper coloring is a proper vertex 2-coloring is \( \mathbf {NP} \)-complete.  相似文献

This paper studies approximation algorithm for the maximum weight budgeted connected set cover (MWBCSC) problem. Given an element set \(X\), a collection of sets \({\mathcal {S}}\subseteq 2^X\), a weight function \(w\) on \(X\), a cost function \(c\) on \({\mathcal {S}}\), a connected graph \(G_{\mathcal {S}}\) (called communication graph) on vertex set \({\mathcal {S}}\), and a budget \(L\), the MWBCSC problem is to select a subcollection \({\mathcal {S'}}\subseteq {\mathcal {S}}\) such that the cost \(c({\mathcal {S'}})=\sum _{S\in {\mathcal {S'}}}c(S)\le L\), the subgraph of \(G_{\mathcal {S}}\) induced by \({\mathcal {S'}}\) is connected, and the total weight of elements covered by \({\mathcal {S'}}\) (that is \(\sum _{x\in \bigcup _{S\in {\mathcal {S'}}}S}w(x)\)) is maximized. We present a polynomial time algorithm for this problem with a natural communication graph that has performance ratio \(O((\delta +1)\log n)\), where \(\delta \) is the maximum degree of graph \(G_{\mathcal {S}}\) and \(n\) is the number of sets in \({\mathcal {S}}\). In particular, if every set has cost at most \(L/2\), the performance ratio can be improved to \(O(\log n)\).  相似文献

In the Minimum Weight Partial Connected Set Cover problem, we are given a finite ground set \(U\), an integer \(q\le |U|\), a collection \(\mathcal {E}\) of subsets of \(U\), and a connected graph \(G_{\mathcal {E}}\) on vertex set \(\mathcal {E}\), the goal is to find a minimum weight subcollection of \(\mathcal {E}\) which covers at least \(q\) elements of \(U\) and induces a connected subgraph in \(G_{\mathcal {E}}\). In this paper, we derive a “partial cover property” for the greedy solution of the Minimum Weight Set Cover problem, based on which we present (a) for the weighted version under the assumption that any pair of sets in \(\mathcal {E}\) with nonempty intersection are adjacent in \(G_{\mathcal {E}}\) (the Minimum Weight Partial Connected Vertex Cover problem falls into this range), an approximation algorithm with performance ratio \(\rho (1+H(\gamma ))+o(1)\), and (b) for the cardinality version under the assumption that any pair of sets in \(\mathcal {E}\) with nonempty intersection are at most \(d\)-hops away from each other (the Minimum Partial Connected \(k\)-Hop Dominating Set problem falls into this range), an approximation algorithm with performance ratio \(2(1+dH(\gamma ))+o(1)\), where \(\gamma =\max \{|X|:X\in \mathcal {E}\}\), \(H(\cdot )\) is the Harmonic number, and \(\rho \) is the performance ratio for the Minimum Quota Node-Weighted Steiner Tree problem.  相似文献

Given a graph \(G=(V,E)\) and a non-negative integer \(c_u\) for each \(u\in V\), partial degree bounded edge packing problem is to find a subgraph \(G^{\prime }=(V,E^{\prime })\) with maximum \(|E^{\prime }|\) such that for each edge \((u,v)\in E^{\prime }\), either \(deg_{G^{\prime }}(u)\le c_u\) or \(deg_{G^{\prime }}(v)\le c_v\). The problem has been shown to be NP-hard even for uniform degree constraint (i.e., all \(c_u\) being equal). In this work we study the general degree constraint case (arbitrary degree constraint for each vertex) and present two combinatorial approximation algorithms with approximation factors \(4\) and \(2\). Then we give a \(\log _2 n\) approximation algorithm for edge-weighted version of the problem and an efficient exact algorithm for edge-weighted trees with time complexity \(O(n\log n)\). We also consider a generalization of this problem to \(k\)-uniform hypergraphs and present a constant factor approximation algorithm based on linear programming using Lagrangian relaxation.  相似文献

The directed Steiner tree (DST) NP-hard problem asks, considering a directed weighted graph with n nodes and m arcs, a node r called root and a set of k nodes X called terminals, for a minimum cost directed tree rooted at r spanning X. The best known polynomial approximation ratio for DST is a \(O(k^\varepsilon )\)-approximation greedy algorithm. However, a much faster k-approximation, returning the shortest paths from r to X, is generally used in practice. We give two new algorithms : a fast k-approximation called Greedy\(_\text {FLAC}\) running in \(O(m \log (n)k + \min (m, nk)nk^2)\) and a \(O(\sqrt{k})\)-approximation called Greedy\(_\text {FLAC}^\triangleright \) running in \(O(nm + n^2 \log (n)k +n^2 k^3)\). We provide computational results to show that, Greedy\(_\text {FLAC}\) rivals in practice with the running time of the fast k-approximation and returns solution with smaller cost in practice.  相似文献

The model \(k\)-CSP is a random CSP model with moderately growing arity \(k\) of constraints. By incorporating certain linear structure, \(k\)-CSP is revised to a random linear CSP, named \(k\)-hyper-\({\mathbb F}\)-linear CSP. It had been shown theoretically that the two models exhibit exact satisfiability phase transitions when the constraint density \(r\) is varied accordingly. In this paper, we use finite-size scaling analysis to characterize the threshold behaviors of the two models with finite problem size \(n\). A series of experimental studies are carried out to illustrate the scaling window of the model \(k\)-CSP.  相似文献

Let \(G\) be a connected graph with \(n\ge 2\) vertices. Let \(k\ge 1\) be an integer. Suppose that a fire breaks out at a vertex \(v\) of \(G\). A firefighter starts to protect vertices. At each step, the firefighter protects \(k\)-vertices not yet on fire. At the end of each step, the fire spreads to all the unprotected vertices that have a neighbour on fire. Let \(\hbox {sn}_k(v)\) denote the maximum number of vertices in \(G\) that the firefighter can save when a fire breaks out at vertex \(v\). The \(k\)-surviving rate \(\rho _k(G)\) of \(G\) is defined to be \(\frac{1}{n^2}\sum _{v\in V(G)} {\hbox {sn}}_{k}(v)\), which is the average proportion of saved vertices. In this paper, we prove that if \(G\) is a planar graph with \(n\ge 2\) vertices and without 5-cycles, then \(\rho _2(G)>\frac{1}{363}\).  相似文献

For a given graph and an integer t, the MinMax 2-Clustering problem asks if there exists a modification of a given graph into two maximal disjoint cliques by inserting or deleting edges such that the number of the editing edges incident to each vertex is at most t. It has been shown that the problem can be solved in polynomial time for \(t<n/4\), where n is the number of vertices. In this paper, we design parameterized algorithms for different ranges of t. Let \(k=t-n/4\). We show that the problem is polynomial-time solvable when roughly \(k<\sqrt{n/32}\). When \(k\in o(n)\), we design a randomized and a deterministic algorithm with sub-exponential time parameterized complexity, i.e., the problem is in SUBEPT. We also show that the problem can be solved in \(O({2}^{n/r}\cdot n^2)\) time for \(k<n/12\) and in \(O(n^2\cdot 2^{3n/4+k})\) time for \(n/12\le k< n/4\), where \(r=2+\lfloor (n/4-3k-2)/(2k+1) \rfloor \ge 2\).  相似文献

In this paper, we study some extremal problems of three kinds of spectral radii of \(k\)-uniform hypergraphs (the adjacency spectral radius, the signless Laplacian spectral radius and the incidence \(Q\)-spectral radius). We call a connected and acyclic \(k\)-uniform hypergraph a supertree. We introduce the operation of “moving edges” for hypergraphs, together with the two special cases of this operation: the edge-releasing operation and the total grafting operation. By studying the perturbation of these kinds of spectral radii of hypergraphs under these operations, we prove that for all these three kinds of spectral radii, the hyperstar \(\mathcal {S}_{n,k}\) attains uniquely the maximum spectral radius among all \(k\)-uniform supertrees on \(n\) vertices. We also determine the unique \(k\)-uniform supertree on \(n\) vertices with the second largest spectral radius (for these three kinds of spectral radii). We also prove that for all these three kinds of spectral radii, the loose path \(\mathcal {P}_{n,k}\) attains uniquely the minimum spectral radius among all \(k\)-th power hypertrees of \(n\) vertices. Some bounds on the incidence \(Q\)-spectral radius are given. The relation between the incidence \(Q\)-spectral radius and the spectral radius of the matrix product of the incidence matrix and its transpose is discussed.  相似文献

The Gutman index (also known as Schultz index of the second kind) of a graph \(G\) is defined as \(Gut(G)=\sum \nolimits _{u,v\in V(G)}d(u)d(v)d(u, v)\). A graph \(G\) is called a cactus if each block of \(G\) is either an edge or a cycle. Denote by \(\mathcal {C}(n, k)\) the set of connected cacti possessing \(n\) vertices and \(k\) cycles. Let \(k, m\) be positive integers, let \(G\) be a graph with \(m\) edges, and let \(h(m)=\sqrt{2m+\frac{1}{4}}-\frac{1}{2}\). Bollobás and Scott asked whether \(G\) admits a \(k\)-partition \(V_{1}, V_{2}, \ldots , V_{k}\) such that \(\max _{1\le i\le k} \{e(V_{i})\}\le \frac{m}{k^2}+\frac{k-1}{2k^2}h(m)\) and \(e(V_1, \ldots , V_k)\ge {k-1\over k} m +{k-1\over 2k}h(m) -\frac{(k-2)^{2}}{8k}\). In this paper, we present a positive answer to this problem on the graphs with large number of edges and small number of vertices with degrees being multiples of \(k\). Particularly, if \(d\) is not a multiple of \(k\) and \(G\) is \(d\)-regular with \(m\ge {9\over 128}k^4(k-2)^2\), then \(G\) admits a \(k\)-partition as desired. We also improve an earlier result by showing that \(G\) admits a partition \(V_{1}, V_{2}, \ldots , V_{k}\) such that \(e(V_{1},V_{2},\ldots ,V_{k})\ge \frac{k-1}{k}m+\frac{k-1}{2k}h(m)-\frac{(k-2)^{2}}{2(k-1)}\) and \(\max _{1\le i\le k}\{e(V_{i})\}\le \frac{m}{k^{2}}+\frac{k-1}{2k^{2}}h(m)\).  相似文献

We study the maximum coverage problem with group budget constraints (MCG). The input consists of a ground set X, a collection \(\psi \) of subsets of X each of which is associated with a combinatorial structure such that for every set \(S_j\in \psi \), a cost \(c(S_j)\) can be calculated based on the combinatorial structure associated with \(S_j\), a partition \(G_1,G_2,\ldots ,G_l\) of \(\psi \), and budgets \(B_1,B_2,\ldots ,B_l\), and B. A solution to the problem consists of a subset H of \(\psi \) such that \(\sum _{S_j\in H} c(S_j) \le B\) and for each \(i \in {1,2,\ldots ,l}\), \(\sum _{S_j \in H\cap G_i}c(S_j)\le B_i\). The objective is to maximize \(|\bigcup _{S_j\in H}S_j|\). In our work we use a new and improved analysis of the greedy algorithm to prove that it is a \((\frac{\alpha }{3+2\alpha })\)-approximation algorithm, where \(\alpha \) is the approximation ratio of a given oracle which takes as an input a subset \(X^{new}\subseteq X\) and a group \(G_i\) and returns a set \(S_j\in G_i\) which approximates the optimal solution for \(\max _{D\in G_i}\frac{|D\cap X^{new}|}{c(D)}\). This analysis that is shown here to be tight for the greedy algorithm, improves by a factor larger than 2 the analysis of the best known approximation algorithm for MCG.  相似文献
