They might be giants: a review of small presses and little magazines: an interview with Whitney Pastorek,Editor of Pindeldyboz

Abstract

This installment of “They Might Be Giants” highlights a small online/print zine from New York called Pindeldyboz. Described by its editor Whitney Pastorek as a lit mag, Pindeldyboz publishes new fiction every week or so at the Web site but then publishes longer fiction once a year in the annual print zine of the same name. While this may indicate a split personality on the part of the editor/publisher, the goals of both the print and online versions are the same: to publish good fiction.     

An Interview with Stanford M. Forrester, Editor and Publisher of bottle rockets

A little haiku zine / from Connecticut / who would have guessed? This installment of “They Might Be Giants” focuses on bottle rockets, a small haiku journal from, that's right, Connecticut. Life in the Trenches of Print and Web Publishing

With this installment of “From Picas to Pixels,” I look at the differences (and similarities) between print publishing and Web publishing from the zine perspective and the cost differences between the two. I even speculate about why e-journals are still so expensive even though Web publishing is so much cheaper than print publishing (at least from the zine perspective). But then I remind myself that academic journals are a whole lot different than zines and so I carefully excuse myself from the discussion!     

Celebrating Twenty Years of a Serials Column

A co-editor of “The Balance Point” column looks back at its twenty-year history, its current function and its future in serving the serials professional and scholarly community. The author examines how the column emerged as an idea by then Serials Review editor Cindy Hepfer in 1988 to be a forum on important serials issues for practitioners who might not otherwise write formally on these topics. The column has continued though the 1990s and 2000s to provide that function, as well as serve as an important place where authors are invited to explore serial issues much in need of a balanced approach. The author shares comments from past “Balance Point” column editors, John Riddick, Mary Beth Clack, Ellen Finnie Duranceau, Karen Cargille, Markel Tumlin, and Kay Johnson on how they regarded the column, the rewards and challenges they faced, and how they see the future of this format in an evolving electronic communication milieu.

Klingenberg structures and partial designs I: Congruence relations and solutions

We consider generalizations of projective Klingenberg and projective Hjelmslev planes, mainly (b, c)-K-structures. These are triples (φ, Π, Π′) where Π and Π′ are incidence structures and φ : Π → Π′ is an epimorphism which satisfies certain lifting axioms for double flags. The congruence relations of such triples are investigated, leading to nice factorizations of φ. Two integer invariants are associated with each congruence relation, generalizing a theorem of Kleinfeld on projective Hjelmslev planes. These invariants are completely characterized for a special class of triples: the balanced, minimally uniform neighbor cohesive (1,1)-K-structures. We show that a balanced neighbor cohesive (1,1)-K-structure Π “over” a PBIBD Π′ is again a PBIBD and compute its invariants. Several methods are given for constructing symmetric “divisible” PBIBD's on arbitrarily many classes.     

An Interview with Ariel Gore and Bee Lavender of Hip Mama

Abstract

Every small, unassuming zine has the potential to be big. Case in point: Hip Mama, a zine that began in the early '90s as Ariel Gore's senior project using a $1,000 student loan and blossomed into a nationally acclaimed alternative parenting resource. Together with Bee Lavender, Gore continues to publish the journal much as she did with that first issue. But today new readers and new technologies are pushing the zine onto the Web and into larger communities. Why is one choice different?

Group screening method for the statistical analysis of -optimal mixed-level supersaturated designs

In this paper, we propose the application of group screening methods for analyzing data using E(f_NOD)-optimal mixed-level supersaturated designs possessing the equal occurrence property. Supersaturated designs are a large class of factorial designs which can be used for screening out the important factors from a large set of potentially active variables. The huge advantage of these designs is that they reduce the experimental cost drastically, but their critical disadvantage is the high degree of confounding among factorial effects. Based on the idea of the group screening methods, the f factors are sub-divided into g “group-factors”. The “group-factors” are then studied using the penalized likelihood statistical analysis methods at a factorial design with orthogonal or near-orthogonal columns. All factors in groups found to have a large effect are then studied in a second stage of experiments. A comparison of the Type I and Type II error rates of various estimation methods via simulation experiments is performed. The results are presented in tables and discussion follows.     

The 5K Run Toolkit: A Quick,Painless, and Thoughtful Approach to Managing Print Journal Backruns

Abstract

Increasingly, academic libraries are choosing to discard or place in storage print journals that are now available online. The identification of these titles and related collection analysis activities are often time-intensive. The approach at the University of Saskatchewan Library was to develop an online toolkit that combined available data from disparate sources including the integrated library system, SFX link resolver, and OCLC's WorldCat and then present them in a collaborative open source environment. This paper demonstrates how the careful combination of existing data presented in a simple online format allowed subject specialists to make accurate print journal deselection decisions quickly and painlessly.     

Developing a Crystal Clear Future for the Serials Unit in an Electronic Environment: Results of a Workflow Analysis

Institutional growth at Old Dominion University and changes within its libraries over the past several years have left the Serials Unit feeling anything but crystal clear. In moving from a print to an electronic focus, the Serials Unit conducted a workflow analysis project. The analysis resulted in a report containing recommendations for reallocating responsibilities and documenting changes in staff skills and positions. This article, which grew out of a presentation at the 15th North Carolina Serials Conference “Crystal Clear? Today's Libraries, Tomorrow's Library Users,” describes the workflow analysis process and expands on how its recommendations have benefited the Serials Unit.     

Evaluating,Selecting, and Acquiring Electronic Resources

Abstract

The entire back archive of over 140 titles published by Oxford Journals has recently been digitized from print and made available online. The author discusses the motivation behind this undertaking, the resulting end product, and reviews the advantages of an online archive over a traditional print collection both to librarians and to academic researchers. The author also provides an overview of the business models and logistical challenges of such a project which will be of interest to librarians and of relevance to all journal publishers considering a similar digitization program.     

Women's & Gender Studies Journal Database: A Rutgers Experience

The Women's & Gender Studies Journal Database (WGSJD) at Rutgers University is a user-oriented, discipline-based database that provides quick access to journal titles available online. It is also a union list of journal titles, print and online, in the area of women's and gender studies at Rutgers University Libraries. The author describes this database and its value-added service in the context of Rutgers University Libraries' information system. Discussion also includes its advantages and disadvantages, the changing roles and areas of responsibilities for subject selectors, and how the database fits into future developments of the library's information system. Print Magazines for American College Libraries

Abstract

This paper opens discussion about the periodicals that are left behind in the debate over the transition from print to electronic journals in academic libraries, particularly college libraries. The author annotates 100 English-language print magazines titles that support a liberal arts curriculum and the leisure reading of an American college community. These titles should be maintained in print versions for browsing and usefulness, even if online availability exists. Magazines, with their mix of articles, illustrations, sidebars, tables, charts, graphs, lists, and short features, still have an important place in college libraries.     

Reviewing the Review Revues

Abstract

Several major print journals focus exclusively on book reviews, and many librarians use them as important selection tools. Some are specifically written for librarians and feature large numbers of reviews covering all subjects; others are more selective with a wider audience. Examples of both types of journals are examined to see how well their online versions reflect and enhance their print content. Serials Review 2003; 29:237–242.
