T o commemorate the UN Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995, the "10th Anniversary Commemoration of the Fourth World Conference on Women" is going to be held from August 29 to September 1 in Beijing. This grand occasion is co-sponsored by the National Working Committee on Women and Children, All-China Women's Federation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations system in China. Participants will discuss the following issues: women's participation in decision-making and management, women's economic empowerment, women and the poverty eradication, women's human rights and the elimination of violence against women, women and HIV/AIDS, and women and sustainable development.     

Looking Towards the 1995 World Women's Conference——the second international seminar on women's studies

Women's development is a process. It is also a process to await the Fourth World Conference on Women to be held in Beijing in 1995, a process to further mobilize women from various countries to gain equality between the sexes and to take a part in social development. The second international seminar on women's studies was held from November 23 to 26, 1993, at Beijing University in preparation for this day. Some 100 women researchers from Australia, Bangladesh', Canada, the United States, England, Malaysia and Japan, as well as Hong Kong and China participated in the event. It was one of the most lively and active seminars held during this process. To take prompt action in development was a common nderstanding of the participants.     

Chinese and Foreign Students Debate Gender Equality

WITH the Fourth World Conference on Women drawing near, more and more people are showing a strong interest in women's issues. On April 12 the debate "Is the Equality Between Men and Women Impossible?" was held at Beijing Language and Culture University. Hundreds of students and teachers crowded into the 200-seat university theater where the debate was held. The debate consisted of two teams representing positive and negative sides     

Women Battle Inequality

WTTH women parliamentarians worldwide gathering in Beijing on 15 September 1996, China's capital city was once again in the spotlight as women gathered to promote gender equality. One year after the Fourth World Conference on Women and the NGO Forum, and one day before the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held its 96th Conference, 150 women parliamentarians from more than 70 countries gathered in Beijing to attend the 96th Women     

A Folk Women's Research Institute

THE Women's Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Management Science, a folk women's organization, is well-known for the influence its extensive research and activities dealing with women's issues ve had throughout China. Wang Xingjuan devised a plan to open the institute in February 1988 right after her retirement from the Beijing Publishing House; it opened in October of that same year.     

1996 To Readers

AT the golden season of 1995, women and guests from all over the world gathered in Beijing. The UN Fourth World Conference on Women was a complete success. The Conference approved the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action, both aiming at accelerating the implementation of the Nairobi Forward-Looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women. Chinese women celebrated their first International Women's Day in 1924. The celebration was held at the No.1 Public Park in Guangzhou City, initiated by the Central Women's Department of the Kuomintang government.
