In this article, we study Bayesian estimation for the covariance matrix Σ and the precision matrix Ω (the inverse of the covariance matrix) in the star-shaped model with missing data. Based on a Cholesky-type decomposition of the precision matrix Ω = ΨΨ, where Ψ is a lower triangular matrix with positive diagonal elements, we develop the Jeffreys prior and a reference prior for Ψ. We then introduce a class of priors for Ψ, which includes the invariant Haar measures, Jeffreys prior, and reference prior. The posterior properties are discussed and the closed-form expressions for Bayesian estimators for the covariance matrix Σ and the precision matrix Ω are derived under the Stein loss, entropy loss, and symmetric loss. Some simulation results are given for illustration.  相似文献

In the Bayesian approach, the Behrens–Fisher problem has been posed as one of estimation for the difference of two means. No Bayesian solution to the Behrens–Fisher testing problem has yet been given due, perhaps, to the fact that the conventional priors used are improper. While default Bayesian analysis can be carried out for estimation purposes, it poses difficulties for testing problems. This paper generates sensible intrinsic and fractional prior distributions for the Behrens–Fisher testing problem from the improper priors commonly used for estimation. It allows us to compute the Bayes factor to compare the null and the alternative hypotheses. This default procedure of model selection is compared with a frequentist test and the Bayesian information criterion. We find discrepancy in the sense that frequentist and Bayesian information criterion reject the null hypothesis for data, that the Bayes factor for intrinsic or fractional priors do not.  相似文献

The estimation problem of the parameters of a mixed geometric lifetime model, using Bayesian approach and Type I group censored sample, will be investigated in the case of two subpopulations. The Bayes estimates are derived for squared error, minimum expected, general entropy and linex loss functions under informative and diffuse priors. A practical example given by Nelson (W.B. Nelson, Hazard plotting methods for analysis of the life data with different failure models, J. Qual. Technol. 2 (1970), pp. 126–149) is considered. A simulation study is carried out along with risk.  相似文献

In this article, the problem of parameter estimation and variable selection in the Tobit quantile regression model is considered. A Tobit quantile regression with the elastic net penalty from a Bayesian perspective is proposed. Independent gamma priors are put on the l1 norm penalty parameters. A novel aspect of the Bayesian elastic net Tobit quantile regression is to treat the hyperparameters of the gamma priors as unknowns and let the data estimate them along with other parameters. A Bayesian Tobit quantile regression with the adaptive elastic net penalty is also proposed. The Gibbs sampling computational technique is adapted to simulate the parameters from the posterior distributions. The proposed methods are demonstrated by both simulated and real data examples.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper considers the statistical analysis of masked data in a parallel system with inverse Weibull distributed components under type II censoring. Based on Gamma conjugate prior, the Bayesian estimation as well as the hierarchical Bayesian estimation for the parameters and the reliability function of system are obtained by using the Bayesian theory and the hierarchical Bayesian method. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are provided to compare the performances of the estimates under different masking probabilities and effective sample sizes.  相似文献

Abstract

Linear mixed effects models have been popular in small area estimation problems for modeling survey data when the sample size in one or more areas is too small for reliable inference. However, when the data are restricted to a bounded interval, the linear model may be inappropriate, particularly if the data are near the boundary. Nonlinear sampling models are becoming increasingly popular for small area estimation problems when the normal model is inadequate. This paper studies the use of a beta distribution as an alternative to the normal distribution as a sampling model for survey estimates of proportions which take values in (0, 1). Inference for small area proportions based on the posterior distribution of a beta regression model ensures that point estimates and credible intervals take values in (0, 1). Properties of a hierarchical Bayesian small area model with a beta sampling distribution and logistic link function are presented and compared to those of the linear mixed effect model. Propriety of the posterior distribution using certain noninformative priors is shown, and behavior of the posterior mean as a function of the sampling variance and the model variance is described. An example using 2010 Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) data is given, and a numerical example studying small sample properties of the model is presented.  相似文献

In this paper, the Bayesian approach is applied to the estimation problem in the case of step stress partially accelerated life tests with two stress levels and type-I censoring. Gompertz distribution is considered as a lifetime model. The posterior means and posterior variances are derived using the squared-error loss function. The Bayes estimates cannot be obtained in explicit forms. Approximate Bayes estimates are computed using the method of Lindley [D.V. Lindley, Approximate Bayesian methods, Trabajos Estadistica 31 (1980), pp. 223–237]. The advantage of this proposed method is shown. The approximate Bayes estimates obtained under the assumption of non-informative priors are compared with their maximum likelihood counterparts using Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

Noninformative priors are used for estimating the reliability of a stress-strength system. Several reference priors (cf. Berger and Bernardo 1989, 1992) are derived. A class of priors is found by matching the coverage probabilities of one-sided Bayesian credible intervals with the corresponding frequentist coverage probabilities. It turns out that none of the reference priors is a matching prior. Sufficient conditions for propriety of posteriors under reference priors and matching priors are provided. A simple matching prior is compared with three reference priors when sample sizes are small. The study shows that the matching prior performs better than Jeffreys's prior and reference priors in meeting the target coverage probabilities.  相似文献

Multivariate density estimation plays an important role in investigating the mechanism of high-dimensional data. This article describes a nonparametric Bayesian approach to the estimation of multivariate densities. A general procedure is proposed for constructing Feller priors for multivariate densities and their theoretical properties as nonparametric priors are established. A blocked Gibbs sampling algorithm is devised to sample from the posterior of the multivariate density. A simulation study is conducted to evaluate the performance of the procedure.  相似文献

This paper develops Bayesian analysis in the context of progressively Type II censored data from the compound Rayleigh distribution. The maximum likelihood and Bayes estimates along with associated posterior risks are derived for reliability performances under balanced loss functions by assuming continuous priors for parameters of the distribution. A practical example is used to illustrate the estimation methods. A simulation study has been carried out to compare the performance of estimates. The study indicates that Bayesian estimation should be preferred over maximum likelihood estimation. In Bayesian estimation, the balance general entropy loss function can be effectively employed for optimal decision-making.  相似文献

Bayesian inference of a generalized Weibull stress‐strength model (SSM) with more than one strength component is considered. For this problem, properly assigning priors for the reliabilities is challenging due to the presence of nuisance parameters. Matching priors, which are priors matching the posterior probabilities of certain regions with their frequentist coverage probabilities, are commonly used but difficult to derive in this problem. Instead, we apply an alternative method and derive a matching prior based on a modification of the profile likelihood. Simulation studies show that this proposed prior performs well in terms of frequentist coverage and estimation even when the sample sizes are minimal. The prior is applied to two real datasets. The two-parameter generalized exponential (GE) distribution was introduced by Gupta and Kundu [Gupta, R.D. and Kundu, D., 1999, Generalized exponential distribution. Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics, 41(2), 173–188.]. It was observed that the GE can be used in situations where a skewed distribution for a nonnegative random variable is needed. In this article, the Bayesian estimation and prediction for the GE distribution, using informative priors, have been considered. Importance sampling is used to estimate the parameters, as well as the reliability function, and the Gibbs and Metropolis samplers data sets are used to predict the behavior of further observations from the distribution. Two data sets are used to illustrate the Bayesian procedure.  相似文献

This paper develops an objective Bayesian analysis method for estimating unknown parameters of the half-logistic distribution when a sample is available from the progressively Type-II censoring scheme. Noninformative priors such as Jeffreys and reference priors are derived. In addition, derived priors are checked to determine whether they satisfy probability-matching criteria. The Metropolis–Hasting algorithm is applied to generate Markov chain Monte Carlo samples from these posterior density functions because marginal posterior density functions of each parameter cannot be expressed in an explicit form. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to investigate frequentist properties of estimated models under noninformative priors. For illustration purposes, a real data set is presented, and the quality of models under noninformative priors is evaluated through posterior predictive checking.  相似文献

In this paper, the destructive negative binomial (DNB) cure rate model with a latent activation scheme [V. Cancho, D. Bandyopadhyay, F. Louzada, and B. Yiqi, The DNB cure rate model with a latent activation scheme, Statistical Methodology 13 (2013b), pp. 48–68] is extended to the case where the observations are grouped into clusters. Parameter estimation is performed based on the restricted maximum likelihood approach and on a Bayesian approach based on Dirichlet process priors. An application to a real data set related to a sealant study in a dentistry experiment is considered to illustrate the performance of the proposed model.  相似文献

This article considers a k level step-stress accelerated life testing (ALT) on series system products, where independent Weibull-distributed lifetimes are assumed for the components. Due to cost considerations or environmental restrictions, causes of system failures are masked and type-I censored observations might occur in the collected data. Bayesian approach combined with auxiliary variables is developed for estimating the parameters of the model. Further, the reliability and hazard rate functions of the system and components are estimated at a specified time at use stress level. The proposed method is illustrated through a numerical example based on two priors and various masking probabilities.  相似文献

One critical issue in the Bayesian approach is choosing the priors when there is not enough prior information to specify hyperparameters. Several improper noninformative priors for capture-recapture models were proposed in the literature. It is known that the Bayesian estimate can be sensitive to the choice of priors, especially when sample size is small to moderate. Yet, how to choose a noninformative prior for a given model remains a question. In this paper, as the first step, we consider the problem of estimating the population size for MtMt model using noninformative priors. The MtMt model has prodigious application in wildlife management, ecology, software liability, epidemiological study, census under-count, and other research areas. Four commonly used noninformative priors are considered. We find that the choice of noninformative priors depends on the number of sampling occasions only. The guidelines on the choice of noninformative priors are provided based on the simulation results. Propriety of applying improper noninformative prior is discussed. Simulation studies are developed to inspect the frequentist performance of Bayesian point and interval estimates with different noninformative priors under various population sizes, capture probabilities, and the number of sampling occasions. The simulation results show that the Bayesian approach can provide more accurate estimates of the population size than the MLE for small samples. Two real-data examples are given to illustrate the method.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper considers panel data models with fixed effects which have grouped patterns with unknown group membership. A two-stage estimation (TSE) procedure is developed to improve the properties of the GFE estimators of common parameters when the time span is small. Firstly, the common parameters are estimated. Subsequently, the optimal group assignment and the estimators of group effects are obtained by the K-means algorithm. Monte Carlo results reveal that the TSE estimator has a much smaller bias than the GFE estimator when the values of difference between effects are moderately small or at high variance of the idiosyncratic error.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper, we assume that the lifetimes have a two-parameter Pareto distribution and discuss some results of progressive Type-II censored sample. We obtain maximum likelihood estimators and Bayes estimators of the unknown parameters under squared error loss and a precautionary loss functions in progressively Type-II censored sample. Robust Bayes estimation of unknown parameters over three different classes of priors under progressively Type-II censored sample, squared error loss, and precautionary loss functions are obtained. We discuss estimation of unknown parameters on competing risks progressive Type-II censoring. Finally, we consider the problem of estimating the common scale parameter of two Pareto distributions when samples are progressively Type-II censored.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article, main characteristics of a generalized Gumbel (GG) distribution are derived. Parameter estimation with method of moments, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian approaches are demonstrated. Due to the ranges of its skewness and kurtosis, it is satisfactory for fitting a wide variety of datasets. Also, it can be used to model block maxima or minima data due to its close connection with the standard Gumbel distribution. It is demonstrated that the GG distribution fits more accurately than both of the standard Gumbel and generalized extreme value distributions to block maxima data under specific conditions.  相似文献
