The Pareto distribution is found in a large number of real world situations and is also a well-known model for extreme events. In the spirit of Neyman [1937. Smooth tests for goodness of fit. Skand. Aktuarietidskr. 20, 149–199] and Thomas and Pierce [1979. Neyman's smooth goodness-of-fit test when the hypothesis is composite. J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 74, 441–445], we propose a smooth goodness of fit test for the Pareto distribution family which is motivated by LeCam's theory of local asymptotic normality (LAN). We establish the behavior of the associated test statistic firstly under the null hypothesis that the sample follows a Pareto distribution and secondly under local alternatives using the LAN framework. Finally, simulations are provided in order to study the finite sample behavior of the test statistic.  相似文献

In this paper tests of hypothesis are constructed for the family of skew normal distributions. The proposed tests utilize the fact that the moment generating function of the skew normal variable satisfies a simple differential equation. The empirical counterpart of this equation, involving the empirical moment generating function, yields simple consistent test statistics. Finite-sample results as well as results from real data are provided for the proposed procedures.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the partial linear model with the covariables missing at random. Empirical likelihood ratios for the regression coefficients and the baseline function are investigated, the empirical log-likelihood ratios are proven to be asymptotically chi-squared and the corresponding confidence regions for the parameters of interest are then constructed. The finite sample behavior of the proposed method is evaluated with simulation and illustrated with an AIDS clinical trial dataset.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider how to incorporate quantile information to improve estimator efficiency for regression model with missing covariates. We combine the quantile information with least-squares normal equations and construct an unbiased estimating equations (EEs). The lack of smoothness of the objective EEs is overcome by replacing them with smooth approximations. The maximum smoothed empirical likelihood (MSEL) estimators are established based on inverse probability weighted (IPW) smoothed EEs and their asymptotic properties are studied under some regular conditions. Moreover, we develop two novel testing procedures for the underlying model. The finite-sample performance of the proposed methodology is examined by simulation studies. A real example is used to illustrate our methods.  相似文献

A p-value is developed for testing the equivalence of the variances of a bivariate normal distribution. The unknown correlation coefficient is a nuisance parameter in the problem. If the correlation is known, the proposed p-value provides an exact test. For large samples, the p-value can be computed by replacing the unknown correlation by the sample correlation, and the resulting test is quite satisfactory. For small samples, it is proposed to compute the p-value by replacing the unknown correlation by a scalar multiple of the sample correlation. However, a single scalar is not satisfactory, and it is proposed to use different scalars depending on the magnitude of the sample correlation coefficient. In order to implement this approach, tables are obtained providing sub-intervals for the sample correlation coefficient, and the scalars to be used if the sample correlation coefficient belongs to a particular sub-interval. Once such tables are available, the proposed p-value is quite easy to compute since it has an explicit analytic expression. Numerical results on the type I error probability and power are reported on the performance of such a test, and the proposed p-value test is also compared to another test based on a rejection region. The results are illustrated with two examples: an example dealing with the comparability of two measuring devices, and an example dealing with the assessment of bioequivalence.  相似文献

The estimation of the mean of an univariate normal population with unknown variance is considered when uncertain non-sample prior information is available. Alternative estimators are defined to incorporate both the sample as well as the non-sample information in the estimation process. Some of the important statistical properties of the restricted, preliminary test, and shrinkage estimators are investigated. The performances of the estimators are compared based on the criteria of unbiasedness and mean square error in order to search for a ‘best’ estimator. Both analytical and graphical methods are explored. There is no superior estimator that uniformly dominates the others. However, if the non-sample information regarding the value of the mean is close to its true value, the shrinkage estimator over performs the rest of the estimators. We consider the comparison of mean vectors for k groups when k is large and sample size per group is fixed. The asymptotic null and non-null distributions of the normal theory likelihood ratio, Lawley–Hotelling and Bartlett–Nanda–Pillai statistics are derived under general conditions. We extend the results to tests on the profiles of the mean vectors, tests for additional information (provided by a sub-vector of the responses over and beyond the remaining sub-vector of responses in separating the groups) and tests on the dimension of the hyperplane formed by the mean vectors. Our techniques are based on perturbation expansions and limit theorems applied to independent but non-identically distributed sequences of quadratic forms in random matrices. In all these four MANOVA problems, the asymptotic null and non-null distributions are normal. Both the null and non-null distributions are asymptotically invariant to non-normality when the group sample sizes are equal. In the unbalanced case, a slight modification of the test statistics will lead to asymptotically robust tests. Based on the robustness results, some approaches for finite approximation are introduced. The numerical results provide strong support for the asymptotic results and finiteness approximations.  相似文献

A general approach for comparing designs of paired comparison experiments on the basis of the asymptotic relative efficiencies, in the Bahadur sense, of their respective likelihood ratio tests is discussed and extended to factorials. Explicit results for comparing five designs of 2q factorial paired comparison experiments are obtained. These results indicate that some of the designs which require comparison of fewer distinct pairs of treatments than does the completely balanced design are, generally, more efficient for detecting main effects and/or certain interactions. The developments of this paper generalize the work of Littell and Boyett (1977) for comparing two designs of R x C factorial paired comparison experiments.  相似文献

Bayesian inference of a generalized Weibull stress‐strength model (SSM) with more than one strength component is considered. For this problem, properly assigning priors for the reliabilities is challenging due to the presence of nuisance parameters. Matching priors, which are priors matching the posterior probabilities of certain regions with their frequentist coverage probabilities, are commonly used but difficult to derive in this problem. Instead, we apply an alternative method and derive a matching prior based on a modification of the profile likelihood. Simulation studies show that this proposed prior performs well in terms of frequentist coverage and estimation even when the sample sizes are minimal. The prior is applied to two real datasets. By comparing estimators of the variance of idiosyncratic error at different robust levels, two Hausman-type test statistics are respectively constructed for the existence of individual and time effects in the panel regression model with incomplete data. The resultant test statistics have several desired properties. Firstly, they are robust to the presence of one effect when the other is tested. Secondly, they are immune to the non-normal distribution of the disturbances since the distributional conditions are not needed in the construction of the statistics. Thirdly, they have more robust performances than the main competitors in the literature when the covariates are correlated with the effects. Additionally, they are very simple and have no heavy computational burden. Joint tests for both of the two effects are also discussed. Monte Carlo evidence shows that the proposed tests have desired finite sample properties, and a real data analysis gives further support.  相似文献

An account of the behavior of the independent-samples t-test when applied to homoschedastic bivariate normal data is presented, and a comparison is made with the paired-samples t-test. Since the significance level is not violated when applying the independent-samples t-test to data which consist of positively correlated pairs and since the estimate of the variance is based on a larger number of ‘degrees of freedom’, the results suggest that when the sample size is small, one should not worry much about the possible existence of weak positive correlation. One may do better, powerwise, to ignore such correlation and use the independent-samples t-test, as though the samples were independent.  相似文献

Suppose that there are independent samples available from several multivariate normal populations with the same mean vector m? but possibly different covariance matrices. The problem of developing a confidence region for the common mean vector based on all the samples is considered. An exact confidence region centered at a generalized version of the well-known Graybill-Deal estimator of m? is developed, and a multiple comparison procedure based on this confidence region is outlined. Necessary percentile points for constructing the confidence region are given for the two-sample case. For more than two samples, a convenient method of approximating the percentile points is suggested. Also, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the methods. Further, for the bivariate case, the proposed confidence region and the ones based on individual samples are compared numerically with respect to their expected areas. The numerical results indicate that the new confidence region is preferable to the single-sample versions for practical use.  相似文献
