Abstract

Reports from the 18th North American Serials Interest Group Conference held in June 2003 and the annual meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology held in October 2003.

The two reports in this column describe the experience of a conference student grant winner at the 2003 North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) Conference at Portland State University (PSU) and six plenary sessions from the 66th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST) held in Long Beach, CA. NASIG has not been held in the Northwest since the group was in Vancouver in 1996. Many attendees enjoyed spending time in Powell's bookshop. I'm sure the Portland economy was booming with so many librarians in town. Because there were no residence halls at PSU, delegates stayed in local hotels—quite a change for long-time NASIG members. Lisa Bowman focuses on this theme of change. Rafal Kasprowski presents a very thorough and fascinating report on ASIST sessions dealing with the humanizing of technology. While not specifically aimed at serialists, we can all appreciate how this topic fits into our daily routines where technology seems to rule, or maybe it only rules as much as we let it. Nonetheless, Kasprowski covers a lot of excellent research on new directions in system design as well as several theoretical and methodological approaches for more effective information service. Social and cultural analysis is important, and emotion can even play a key role in user interaction with systems. There is a lot yet to learn and understand about user behavior, and the ASIST conference has really put together an excellent series of presentations.  相似文献

Preface
The appearance of this issue will mark almost two years since its inception by the late Editor, Professor Don B. Owen. Professor Malay Ghosh suggested a special issue on Pitman's Measure of Closeness (PMC) to Professor Owen in autumn of 1989. After a thorough review process the issue was finalized in June 1991. It is with remorse that we publish this special issue in memory of Professor Owen.

The completion of the issue coincided with a special conference, “Pitman's Measure of Cfoseness: Celebrating a Decade of Renaissance,” held on June 15, 1991 at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). The papers in this special issue, except those of Professor Kubokawa and Drs. Bertuzzi and Gandolfi, were presented and discussed. The conference participants included C.R. Rao (Pennsylvania State University), Colin Blyth (Queen's University), and H.T. David (Iowa State University). Further, P.K. Sen (University of North Carolina) and Malay Ghosh (University of Florida) gave keynote addresses that respectively set the themes for the morning and afternoon sessions.

The conference banquet held in the Regent's Room at the University of Texas at San Antonio, featured stimulating addresses by C.R. Rao and Colin Blyth on some of the major controversies of PMC such as intransitiveness and Berkson's conjecture. We are grateful to the University of Texas at San Antonio for making this conference a reality. In particular, we thank Professor Shair Ahmad, Director of the Division of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics at UTSA for funding travel expenses not only for the invited speakers but also for many of the younger researchers. We also acknowledge University President Samuel Kirkpatrick who made the KIVA room available for the technical sessions and the Regent's Room for the Banquet. We also acknowledge the financial support of Bell Helicopter Textron, Inc. as a cosponsor of the conference.  相似文献

The 2011 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) conference theme, “A Declaration of Interdependence,” linked the conference to its physical location, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The all-conference reception on Friday night in the six-year-old National Constitution Center expressed the theme perfectly. Held biennially, the 2011 ACRL conference attracted its highest attendance ever: over 5,000 attendees (some virtual), vendors, speakers and guests. Attendee demographics were decidedly younger than those seen at recent general American Library Association (ALA) conferences.  相似文献

For the past thirty years libraries have made serials backfile decisions based on an understanding that microfilm is a more cost effective format than bound print journals. Yet with the rising cost of microfilm, is this still the case? In spring 2002, the collection development team leader at the Florida Gulf Coast University Library compared the costs of microfilm and bound print serial backfiles, and also how those two mediums compared with costs of a stable electronic backfile collection. The author presented the results in a poster session at the 17th annual conference of the North American Serials Interest Group in Williamsburg, Virginia, June 20–23, 2002, and then recalculated all statistics prior to publication in this article. Identification of long memory in GARCH models   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Abstract: This work extends the analysis of Baillie, Bollerslev and Mikkelsen (1996) and Bollerslev and Mikkelsen (1996) on the estimation and identification problems of the Fractionally Integrated Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedastik (FIGARCH) model. We assess the power of different information criteria and tests in identifying the presence of long memory in the conditional variances. The analysis is performed with a Montecarlo simulation study. In detail, the focus on the Akaike, Hannan-Quinn, Shibata and Schwarz information criteria and on the Jarque-Bera test for normality, Box-Pierce test for residual correlation and Engle test for ARCH effects. This study verifies that information criteria clearly distinguish the presence of long memory while tests do not evidence any difference between the fitted long and short memory models. An empirical application is provided; it analyses, on a high frequency dataset, the returns of the FIB30, the future on the MIB30, the Italian stock market index of highly capitalized firms.Massimiliano Caporin: mcaporin@unive.itThis paper was presented at the SIS 2002 Conference (Italian Statistical society annual meeting) held in Milan, University Bicocca, 5-7 June 2002. A short version of this work can be found in the proceedings of the conference  相似文献

A survey of business schools was conducted to obtain information about the current state of the teaching of business statistics to students enrolled in M.B.A. degree programs. The survey was undertaken for and presented at a June 1986 conference on “Making Statistics More Effective in Schools of Business,” held at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business. Information was elicited concerning both the required statistics sequence and elective statistics courses for M.B.A. students, as well as computer usage in these courses. This article summarizes the information obtained from the survey.  相似文献
