We propose some estimators of noncentrality parameters which improve upon usual unbiased estimators under quadratic loss. The distributions we consider are the noncentral chi-square and the noncentral F. However, we give more general results for the family of elliptically contoured distributions and propose a robust dominating estimator.  相似文献

Fast and robust bootstrap   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper we review recent developments on a bootstrap method for robust estimators which is computationally faster and more resistant to outliers than the classical bootstrap. This fast and robust bootstrap method is, under reasonable regularity conditions, asymptotically consistent. We describe the method in general and then consider its application to perform inference based on robust estimators for the linear regression and multivariate location-scatter models. In particular, we study confidence and prediction intervals and tests of hypotheses for linear regression models, inference for location-scatter parameters and principal components, and classification error estimation for discriminant analysis.  相似文献

Abstract.  We develop a variance reduction method for smoothing splines. For a given point of estimation, we define a variance-reduced spline estimate as a linear combination of classical spline estimates at three nearby points. We first develop a variance reduction method for spline estimators in univariate regression models. We then develop an analogous variance reduction method for spline estimators in clustered/longitudinal models. Simulation studies are performed which demonstrate the efficacy of our variance reduction methods in finite sample settings. Finally, a real data analysis with the motorcycle data set is performed. Here we consider variance estimation and generate 95% pointwise confidence intervals for the unknown regression function.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider some problems of estimation and reconstruction based on middle censored competing risks data. It is assumed that the lifetime distributions of the latent failure times are independent and exponential distributed with different parameters and also that the censoring mechanism is independent. The maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) of the unknown parameters are obtained. We then use the asymptotic distribution of the MLEs to construct approximate confidence intervals. Based on gamma priors, Lindley's approximation method is applied to obtain the Bayesian estimates of the unknown parameters under squared error loss function. Since it is not possible to construct the credible intervals, we propose and implement the Gibbs sampling technique to construct the credible intervals. Several point reconstructors for failure time of censored units are provided. Finally, a simulation study is given by Monte-Carlo simulations to evaluate the performances of the different methods and a data set is analysed to illustrate the proposed procedures.  相似文献

Log-normal linear models are widely used in applications, and many times it is of interest to predict the response variable or to estimate the mean of the response variable at the original scale for a new set of covariate values. In this paper we consider the problem of efficient estimation of the conditional mean of the response variable at the original scale for log-normal linear models. Several existing estimators are reviewed first, including the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator, the restricted ML (REML) estimator, the uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) estimator, and a bias-corrected REML estimator. We then propose two estimators that minimize the asymptotic mean squared error and the asymptotic bias, respectively. A parametric bootstrap procedure is also described to obtain confidence intervals for the proposed estimators. Both the new estimators and the bootstrap procedure are very easy to implement. Comparisons of the estimators using simulation studies suggest that our estimators perform better than the existing ones, and the bootstrap procedure yields confidence intervals with good coverage properties. A real application of estimating the mean sediment discharge is used to illustrate the methodology.  相似文献

The estimated test error of a learned classifier is the most commonly reported measure of classifier performance. However, constructing a high quality point estimator of the test error has proved to be very difficult. Furthermore, common interval estimators (e.g. confidence intervals) are based on the point estimator of the test error and thus inherit all the difficulties associated with the point estimation problem. As a result, these confidence intervals do not reliably deliver nominal coverage. In contrast we directly construct the confidence interval by use of smooth data-dependent upper and lower bounds on the test error. We prove that for linear classifiers, the proposed confidence interval automatically adapts to the non-smoothness of the test error, is consistent under fixed and local alternatives, and does not require that the Bayes classifier be linear. Moreover, the method provides nominal coverage on a suite of test problems using a range of classification algorithms and sample sizes.  相似文献

We consider the problem of estimating the error variance in a general linear model when the error distribution is assumed to be spherically symmetric, but not necessary Gaussian. In particular we study the case of a scale mixture of Gaussians including the particularly important case of the multivariate-t distribution. Under Stein's loss, we construct a class of estimators that improve on the usual best unbiased (and best equivariant) estimator. Our class has the interesting double robustness property of being simultaneously generalized Bayes (for the same generalized prior) and minimax over the entire class of scale mixture of Gaussian distributions.  相似文献

It is shown that Strawderman's [1974. Minimax estimation of powers of the variance of a normal population under squared error loss. Ann. Statist. 2, 190–198] technique for estimating the variance of a normal distribution can be extended to estimating a general scale parameter in the presence of a nuisance parameter. Employing standard monotone likelihood ratio-type conditions, a new class of improved estimators for this scale parameter is derived under quadratic loss. By imposing an additional condition, a broader class of improved estimators is obtained. The dominating procedures are in form analogous to those in Strawderman [1974. Minimax estimation of powers of the variance of a normal population under squared error loss. Ann. Statist. 2, 190–198]. Application of the general results to the exponential distribution yields new sufficient conditions, other than those of Brewster and Zidek [1974. Improving on equivariant estimators. Ann. Statist. 2, 21–38] and Kubokawa [1994. A unified approach to improving equivariant estimators. Ann. Statist. 22, 290–299], for improving the best affine equivariant estimator of the scale parameter. A class of estimators satisfying the new conditions is constructed. The results shed new light on Strawderman's [1974. Minimax estimation of powers of the variance of a normal population under squared error loss. Ann. Statist. 2, 190–198] technique.  相似文献

In discrete event simulation, the method of control variates is often used to reduce the variance of estimation for the mean of the output response. In the present paper, it is shown that when three or more control variates are used, the usual linear regression estimator of the mean response is one of a large class of unbiased estimators, many of which have smaller variance than the usual estimator. In simulation studies using control variates, a confidence interval for the mean response is typically reported as well. Intervals with shorter width have been proposed using control variates in the literature. The present paper however develops confidence intervals which not only have shorter width but also have higher coverage probability than the usual confidence interval  相似文献

In estimating p( ? 2) independent Poisson means, Clevenson and Zidek (1975) have proposed a class of estimators that shrink the unbiased estimator to the origin and dominate the unbiased one under the normalized squared error loss. This class of estimators was subsequently enlarged in several directions. This article deals with the problem and proposes new classes of dominating estimators using prior information pertinently. Dominance is shown by partitioning the sample space into disjoint subsets and averaging the loss difference over each subset. Estimation of several Poisson mean vectors is also discussed. Further, simultaneous estimation of Poisson means under order restriction is treated and estimators which dominate the isotonic regression estimator are proposed for some types of order restrictions.  相似文献

Lognormal regression model with unknown error variance is considered. We give a class of estimators of the regression coefficients vector improving upon traditional estimator when the number of independent variables is at least three. The relationship between these estimators on one hand and James-Stein type estimators of the normal mean and improved estimators of the normal variance on another hand is discussed.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with model averaging procedure for varying-coefficient partially linear models with missing responses. The profile least-squares estimation process and inverse probability weighted method are employed to estimate regression coefficients of the partially restricted models, in which the propensity score is estimated by the covariate balancing propensity score method. The estimators of the linear parameters are shown to be asymptotically normal. Then we develop the focused information criterion, formulate the frequentist model averaging estimators and construct the corresponding confidence intervals. Some simulation studies are conducted to examine the finite sample performance of the proposed methods. We find that the covariate balancing propensity score improves the performance of the inverse probability weighted estimator. We also demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model averaging estimators over those of existing strategies in terms of mean squared error and coverage probability. Finally, our approach is further applied to a real data example.  相似文献

In the linear regression model, the asymptotic distributions of certain functions of confidence bounds of a class of confidence intervals for the regression parameter arc investigated. The class of confidence intervals we consider in this paper are based on the usual linear rank statistics (signed as well as unsigned). Under suitable assumptions, if the confidence intervals are based on the signed linear rank statistics, it is established that the lengths, properly normalized, of the confidence intervals converge in law to the standard normal distributions; if the confidence intervals arc based on the unsigned linear rank statistics, it is then proved that a linear function of the confidence bounds converges in law to a normal distribution.  相似文献

This article is devoted to the development of product of spacings estimator for a Progressive hybrid Type-I censoring scheme with binomial removals. The experimental units are assumed to follow inverse Lindley distribution. We propose a Bayes estimator of associated scale parameter based on the product of spacings function and simultaneously compare it with that obtained under a usual Bayesian estimation procedure. The estimators are obtained under the squared error loss function along with corresponding HP intervals evaluated by using the Markov chain Monte-Carlo technique. The classical product of spacings estimator has also been derived and compared with the maximum likelihood estimator in addition to 95% average asymptotic confidence intervals. The applicability of the proposed methods is demonstrated by analysing a real data of guinea pigs affected with tuberculosis for the considered censoring scheme.  相似文献

We consider estimation of unknown parameters and reliability characteristics of a Burr type-III distribution under progressive censoring. Predictive estimates for censored observations and the associated prediction intervals are also obtained. We derive maximum-likelihood estimators of unknown quantities using the EM algorithm and then also obtain the observed Fisher information matrix. We provide various Bayes estimators for unknown parameters under the squared error loss function. Highest posterior density and asymptotic intervals are also constructed. We evaluate performance of proposed methods using simulations. Finally, an illustrative example is presented in support of the methods discussed.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the risk of an estimator of the error variance after a pre-test for homoscedasticity of the variances in the two-sample heteroscedastic linear regression model. This particular pre-test problem has been well investigated but always under the restrictive assumption of a squared error loss function. We consider an asymmetric loss function — the LINEX loss function — and derive the exact risks of various estimators of the error variance.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the properties of the preliminary test, restricted and unrestricted ridge regression estimators of the linear regression model with non-normal disturbances. We present the estimators of the regression coefficients combining the idea of preliminary test and ridge regression methodology, when it is suspected that the regression coefficients may be restricted to a subspace and the regression error is distributed as multivariate t. Accordingly we consider three estimators, namely the Unrestricted Ridge Regression Estimator (URRRE), the Restricted Ridge Regression Estimator (RRRE) and finally the Preliminary test Ridge Regression Estimator (PTRRE). The biases and the mean square error (MSE) of the estimators are derived under the null and alternative hypotheses and compared with the usual estimators. By studying the MSE criterion, the regions of optimahty of the estimators are determined.  相似文献

We introduce a new class of flexible hazard rate distributions which have constant, increasing, decreasing, and bathtub-shaped hazard function. This class of distributions obtained by compounding the power and exponential hazard rate functions, which is called the power-exponential hazard rate distribution and contains several important lifetime distributions. We obtain some distributional properties of the new family of distributions. The estimation of parameters is obtained by using the maximum likelihood and the Bayesian methods under squared error, linear-exponential, and Stein’s loss functions. Also, approximate confidence intervals and HPD credible intervals of parameters are presented. An application to real dataset is provided to show that the new hazard rate distribution has a better fit than the other existing hazard rate distributions and some four-parameter distributions. Finally , to compare the performance of proposed estimators and confidence intervals, an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study is conducted.  相似文献

In most cases, we use a symmetric loss such as the quadratic loss in a usual estimation problem. But, in the non-regular case when the regularity conditions do not necessarily hold, it seems to be more reasonable to choose an asymmetric loss than the symmetric one. In this paper, we consider the Bayes estimation under the linear exponential (LINEX) loss which is regarded as a typical example of asymmetric loss. We also compare the Bayes risks of estimators under the LINEX loss for a family of truncated distributions and a location parameter family of truncated distributions.  相似文献

Independence of error terms in a linear regression model, often not established. So a linear regression model with correlated error terms appears in many applications. According to the earlier studies, this kind of error terms, basically can affect the robustness of the linear regression model analysis. It is also shown that the robustness of the parameters estimators of a linear regression model can stay using the M-estimator. But considering that, it acquires this feature as the result of establishment of its efficiency. Whereas, it has been shown that the minimum Matusita distance estimators, has both features robustness and efficiency at the same time. On the other hand, because the Cochrane and Orcutt adjusted least squares estimators are not affected by the dependence of the error terms, so they are efficient estimators. Here we are using of a non-parametric kernel density estimation method, to give a new method of obtaining the minimum Matusita distance estimators for the linear regression model with correlated error terms in the presence of outliers. Also, simulation and real data study both are done for the introduced estimation method. In each case, the proposed method represents lower biases and mean squared errors than the other two methods.KEYWORDS: Robust estimation method, minimum Matusita distance estimation method, non-parametric kernel density estimation method, correlated error terms, outliers  相似文献
