Estimating a Convex Function in Nonparametric Regression   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract.  A new nonparametric estimate of a convex regression function is proposed and its stochastic properties are studied. The method starts with an unconstrained estimate of the derivative of the regression function, which is firstly isotonized and then integrated. We prove asymptotic normality of the new estimate and show that it is first order asymptotically equivalent to the initial unconstrained estimate if the regression function is in fact convex. If convexity is not present, the method estimates a convex function whose derivative has the same L p -norm as the derivative of the (non-convex) underlying regression function. The finite sample properties of the new estimate are investigated by means of a simulation study and it is compared with a least squares approach of convex estimation. The application of the new method is demonstrated in two data examples.  相似文献

A semiparametric logistic regression model is proposed in which its nonparametric component is approximated with fixed-knot cubic B-splines. To assess the linearity of the nonparametric component, we construct a penalized likelihood ratio test statistic. When the number of knots is fixed, the null distribution of the test statistic is shown to be asymptotically the distribution of a linear combination of independent chi-squared random variables, each with one degree of freedom. We set the asymptotic null expectation of this test statistic equal to a value to determine the smoothing parameter value. Monte Carlo experiments are conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed test. Its practical use is illustrated with a real-life example.  相似文献

The predicitive sample reuse (PSR) data analysis technique proposed by Geisser and Eddy (1979) is applied to the analysis of categorical data. This application yiclds a new approach which has a number of advantages over classical methods for analysis of such data. A PSR technique for comparing linear or nonlinar regressino relationships, for two or more populations, and a PSR ailernative to certain nonparaemetri statistical tesis are also proposed.  相似文献

Heteroscedasticity generally exists when a linear regression model is applied to analyzing some real-world problems. Therefore, how to accurately estimate the variance functions of the error term in a heteroscedastic linear regression model is of great importance for obtaining efficient estimates of the regression parameters and making valid statistical inferences. A method for estimating the variance function of heteroscedastic linear regression models is proposed in this article based on the variance-reduced local linear smoothing technique. Some simulations and comparisons with other method are conducted to assess the performance of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can accurately estimate the variance functions and therefore produce more efficient estimates of the regression parameters.  相似文献

This paper discusses issues related to the improvement of maximum likelihood estimates in von Mises regression models. It obtains general matrix expressions for the second-order biases of maximum likelihood estimates of the mean parameters and concentration parameters. The formulae are simple to compute, and give the biases by means of weighted linear regressions. Simulation results are presented assessing the performance of corrected maximum likelihood estimates in these models.  相似文献

We investigate the finite sample properties of the estimator of a persistence parameter of an unobservable common factor when the factor is estimated by the principal components method. When the number of cross-sectional observations is not sufficiently large, relative to the number of time series observations, the autoregressive coefficient estimator of a positively autocorrelated factor is biased downward, and the bias becomes larger for a more persistent factor. Based on theoretical and simulation analyses, we show that bootstrap procedures are effective in reducing the bias, and bootstrap confidence intervals outperform naive asymptotic confidence intervals in terms of the coverage probability.  相似文献

We consider the problem of testing for a parametric form of the variance function in a partial linear regression model. A new test is derived, which can detect local alternatives converging to the null hypothesis at a rate n-1/2n-1/2 and is based on a stochastic process of the integrated variance function. We establish weak convergence to a Gaussian process under the null hypothesis, fixed and local alternatives. In the special case of testing for homoscedasticity the limiting process is a scaled Brownian bridge. We also compare the finite sample properties with a test based on an L2L2-distance, which was recently proposed by You and Chen [2005. This paper discusses a model in which the regression lines will be passing through a common point. This point exists as a focal point in the wind-blown sand phenomena. The model of regression lines will be called ‘the focal point regression model’. The focal point will move according to the conditions of the experiments or the measurement site, so it must be estimated together with regression coefficients. The existence of the focal point is mathematically proved in the research field of coastal engineering, but its physical meaning and exact estimation method have not been established. Considering the experimental and/or measurement conditions, five models, that is, common or different error variance(s), passing through or not the centroid and Bayes-like approach are proposed. Moreover, the formulae of direct computation for a focal point under some conditions are given for engineering purpose. The models are applied to the wind-blown sand data, and behaviors of the models are verified by numerical experiments.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a kernel-based estimator for the finite-dimensional parameter of a partially additive linear quantile regression model. For dependent processes that are strictly stationary and absolutely regular, we establish a precise convergent rate and show that the estimator is root-n consistent and asymptotically normal. To help facilitate inferential procedures, a consistent estimator for the asymptotic variance is also provided. In addition to conducting a simulation experiment to evaluate the finite sample performance of the estimator, an application to US inflation is presented. We use the real-data example to motivate how partially additive linear quantile models can offer an alternative modeling option for time-series data.  相似文献

Empirical Bayes estimates of the local false discovery rate can reflect uncertainty about the estimated prior by supplementing their Bayesian posterior probabilities with confidence levels as posterior probabilities. This use of coherent fiducial inference with hierarchical models generates set estimators that propagate uncertainty to varying degrees. Some of the set estimates approach estimates from plug-in empirical Bayes methods for high numbers of comparisons and can come close to the usual confidence sets given a sufficiently low number of comparisons.  相似文献

The mixed effects models with two variance components are often used to analyze longitudinal data. For these models, we compare two approaches to estimating the variance components, the analysis of variance approach and the spectral decomposition approach. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the two approaches to yield identical estimates, and some sufficient conditions for the superiority of one approach over the other, under the mean squared error criterion. Applications of the methods to circular models and longitudinal data are discussed. Furthermore, simulation results indicate that better estimates of variance components do not necessarily imply higher power of the tests or shorter confidence intervals.  相似文献
