Grouped data are frequently used in several fields of study. In this work, we use the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for fitting the skew-normal (SN) mixture model to the grouped data. Implementing the EM algorithm requires computing the one-dimensional integrals for each group or class. Our simulation study and real data analyses reveal that the EM algorithm not only always converges but also can be implemented in just a few seconds even when the number of components is large, contrary to the Bayesian paradigm that is computationally expensive. The accuracy of the EM algorithm and superiority of the SN mixture model over the traditional normal mixture model in modelling grouped data are demonstrated through the simulation and three real data illustrations. For implementing the EM algorithm, we use the package called ForestFit developed for R environment available at https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/ForestFit/index.html.  相似文献

The main objective of this work is to estimate the 5-dime-nsional vector of parameters (p,μ,λ,α,c) of the mixture of an Inverse Gaussian IG(μ,λ) and Weibull W(α,c) distributions with mixing proportion p. We use the maximum Likelihood method (MLM) and the weighted maximum likelihood method (WMLM), both under the sampling schemes suggested by Hosmer (1973). Simulation study shows that the WMLM performs best, when Hosmer's model 2 is used, in the sense of minimizing the mean square error.  相似文献

Abstract

Weibull mixture models are widely used in a variety of fields for modeling phenomena caused by heterogeneous sources. We focus on circumstances in which original observations are not available, and instead the data comes in the form of a grouping of the original observations. We illustrate EM algorithm for fitting Weibull mixture models for grouped data and propose a bootstrap likelihood ratio test (LRT) for determining the number of subpopulations in a mixture model. The effectiveness of the LRT methods are investigated via simulation. We illustrate the utility of these methods by applying them to two grouped data applications.  相似文献

Lifetimes of modern mechanic or electronic units usually exhibit bathtub-shaped failure rates. An appropriate probability distribution to model such data is the modified Weibull distribution proposed by Lai et al. [15]. This distribution has both the two-parameter Weibull and type-1 extreme value distribution as special cases. It is able to model lifetime data with monotonic and bathtub-shaped failure rates, and thus attracts some interest among researchers because of this property. In this paper, the procedure of obtaining the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) of the parameters for progressively type-2 censored and complete samples are studied. Existence and uniqueness of the MLEs are proved.  相似文献

We introduce a new class of distributions called the Weibull Marshall–Olkin-G family. We obtain some of its mathematical properties. The special models of this family provide bathtub-shaped, decreasing-increasing, increasing-decreasing-increasing, decreasing-increasing-decreasing, monotone, unimodal and bimodal hazard functions. The maximum likelihood method is adopted for estimating the model parameters. We assess the performance of the maximum likelihood estimators by means of two simulation studies. We also propose a new family of linear regression models for censored and uncensored data. The flexibility and importance of the proposed models are illustrated by means of three real data sets.  相似文献

It is well-known that the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) of a survival function may severely underestimate the survival probabilities at very early times for left truncated data. This problem might be overcome by instead computing a smoothed nonparametric estimator (SNE) via the EMS algorithm. The close connection between the SNE and the maximum penalized likelihood estimator is also established. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate the superior performance of the SNE over that of the NPMLE, in terms of either bias or variance, even for moderately large Samples. The methodology is illustrated with an application to the Massachusetts Health Care Panel Study dataset to estimate the probability of being functionally independent for non-poor male and female groups rcspectively.  相似文献

In this paper, two new general families of distributions supported on the unit interval are introduced. The proposed families include several known models as special cases and define at least twenty (each one) new special models. Since the list of well-being indicators may include several double bounded random variables, the applicability for modeling those is the major practical motivation for introducing the distributions on those families. We propose a parametrization of the new families in terms of the median and develop a shiny application to provide interactive density shape illustrations for some special cases. Various properties of the introduced families are studied. Some special models in the new families are discussed. In particular, the complementary unit Weibull distribution is studied in some detail. The method of maximum likelihood for estimating the model parameters is discussed. An extensive Monte Carlo experiment is conducted to evaluate the performances of these estimators in finite samples. Applications to the literacy rate in Brazilian and Colombian municipalities illustrate the usefulness of the two new families for modeling well-being indicators.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new treatment for electrical insulation degradation. Some types of insulation which have been used under various circumstances are considered to degrade at various rates in accordance with their stress circumstances. The cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated cables inspected by major Japanese electric companies clearly indicate such phenomena. By assuming that the inspected specimen is sampled from one of the clustered groups, a mixed degradation model can be constructed. Since the degradation of the insulation under common circumstances is considered to follow a Weibull distribution, a mixture model and a Weibull power law can be combined. This is called The mixture Weibull power law model. By using the maximum likelihood estimation for the newly proposed model to Japanese 22 and 33kV insulation class cables, they are clustered into a certain number of groups by using the AIC and the generalized likelihood ratio test method. The reliability of the cables at specified years are assessed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We investigate the use of a dynamic form of the EM algorithm to estimate proportions in finite mixtures of known distributions. We prove a consistency result for this algorithm, which employs only a single EM update for each new observation. Our aim is to demonstrate that the slow convergence rate of the EM algorithm in many applications is of little practical consequence in a situation when data is frequently being updated.  相似文献

Bimodal mixture Weibull distribution being a special case of mixture Weibull distribution has been used recently as a suitable model for heterogeneous data sets in many practical applications. The bimodal mixture Weibull term represents a mixture of two Weibull distributions. Although many estimation methods have been proposed for the bimodal mixture Weibull distribution, there is not a comprehensive comparison. This paper presents a detailed comparison of five kinds of numerical methods, such as maximum likelihood estimation, least-squares method, method of moments, method of logarithmic moments and percentile method (PM) in terms of several criteria by simulation study. Also parameter estimation methods are applied to real data.  相似文献

In this paper, the estimation of parameters for a three-parameter Weibull distribution based on progressively Type-II right censored sample is studied. Different estimation procedures for complete sample are generalized to the case with progressively censored data. These methods include the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs), corrected MLEs, weighted MLEs, maximum product spacing estimators and least squares estimators. We also proposed the use of a censored estimation method with one-step bias-correction to obtain reliable initial estimates for iterative procedures. These methods are compared via a Monte Carlo simulation study in terms of their biases, root mean squared errors and their rates of obtaining reliable estimates. Recommendations are made from the simulation results and a numerical example is presented to illustrate all of the methods of inference developed here.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new method of estimation for the parameters and quantiles of the three-parameter Weibull distribution based on Type-II right censored data. The method, based on a data transformation, overcomes the problem of unbounded likelihood. In the proposed method, under mild conditions, the estimates always exist uniquely, and the estimators are also consistent over the entire parameter space. Through Monte Carlo simulations, we further show that the proposed method of estimation performs well compared to some prominent methods in terms of bias and root mean squared error in small-sample situations. Finally, two real data sets are used to illustrate the proposed method of estimation.  相似文献

In this paper, a competing risks model is considered under adaptive type-I progressive hybrid censoring scheme (AT-I PHCS). The lifetimes of the latent failure times have Weibull distributions with the same shape parameter. We investigate the maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters. Bayes estimates of the parameters are obtained based on squared error and LINEX loss functions under the assumption of independent gamma priors. We propose to apply Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques to carry out a Bayesian estimation procedure and in turn calculate the credible intervals. To evaluate the performance of the estimators, a simulation study is carried out.  相似文献

The consistency of estimators in finite mixture models has been discussed under the topology of the quotient space obtained by collapsing the true parameter set into a single point. In this paper, we extend the results of Cheng and Liu (2001) to give conditions under which the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is strongly consistent in such a sense in finite mixture models with censored data. We also show that the fitted model tends to the true model under a weak condition as the sample size tends to infinity.  相似文献

This paper extends some of the work presented in Redner and Walker [I9841 on the maximum likelihood estimate of parameters in a mixture model to a Bayesian modal estimate. The problem of determining the mode of the joint posterior distribution is discussed. Necessary conditions are given for a choice of parameters to be the mode and a numerical scheme based on the EM algorithm is presented. Some theoretical remarks on the resulting iterative scheme and simulation results are also given.  相似文献

A problem of testing of hypotheses on the mean vector of a multivariate normal distribution with unknown and positive definite covariance matrix is considered when a sample with a special, though not unusual, pattern of missing observations from that population is available. The approximate percentage points of the test statistic are obtained and their accuracy has been checked by comparing them with some exact percentage points which are calculated for complete samples and some special incomplete samples. The approximate percentage points are in good agreement with exact percentage points. The above work is extended to the problem of testing the hypothesis of equality of two mean vectors of two multivariate normal distributions with the same, unknown covariance matrix  相似文献

In many practical situations, complete data are not available in lifetime studies. Many of the available observations are right censored giving survival information up to a noted time and not the exact failure times. This constitutes randomly censored data. In this paper, we consider Maxwell distribution as a survival time model. The censoring time is also assumed to follow a Maxwell distribution with a different parameter. Maximum likelihood estimators and confidence intervals for the parameters are derived with randomly censored data. Bayes estimators are also developed with inverted gamma priors and generalized entropy loss function. A Monte Carlo simulation study is performed to compare the developed estimation procedures. A real data example is given at the end of the study.  相似文献

The purpose of the paper is to estimate the parameters of the two-component mixture of Weibull distribution under doubly censored samples using Bayesian approach. The choice of Weibull distribution is made due to its (i) capability to model failure time data from engineering, medical and biological sciences (ii) added advantages over the well-known lifetime distributions such as exponential, Raleigh, lognormal and gamma distribution in terms of flexibility, increasing and decreasing hazard rate and closed-form distribution function and hazard rate. The proposed two-component mixture of Weibull distribution is even more flexible than its conventional form. However, the estimation of the parameters from the proposed mixture is more complex. Further, we have assumed couple of loss functions under non informative prior for the Bayesian analysis of the parameters from the mixture model. As the resultant Bayes estimators and associated posterior risks cannot be derived in the closed form, we have used the importance sampling and Lindley’s approximation to obtain the approximate estimates for the parameters of the mixture model. The comparison between the performances of approximation techniques has been made on the basis of simulation study and real-life data analysis. The importance sampling is found to be better than Lindley’s approximation as it gives better estimation for shape and mixing parameters of the mixture model and computations under this technique are much easier/shorter than those under Lindley’s approximation.  相似文献

This work presents an extension of the slash Lindley–Weibull distribution, of which it can be considered a modification. The new family is obtained by using the quotient of two independent random variables: a two-parameter Lindley–Weibull distribution divided by a power of the exponential distribution with parameter equal to 2. We present the pdf and cdf of the new distribution, analyzing their risk functions. Some statistical properties are studied and the moments and coefficients of asymmetry and kurtosis are shown. The parameter estimation problem is carried out by the maximum likelihood method. The method is assessed by a Monte Carlo simulation study. We use nutrition data, which are characterized by high kurtosis, to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed model.  相似文献
