ABSTRACT

In many real life problems one assumes a normal model because the sample histogram looks unimodal, symmetric, and/or the standard tests like the Shapiro-Wilk test favor such a model. However, in reality, the assumption of normality may be misplaced since the normality tests often fail to detect departure from normality (especially for small sample sizes) when the data actually comes from slightly heavier tail symmetric unimodal distributions. For this reason it is important to see how the existing normal variance estimators perform when the actual distribution is a t-distribution with k degrees of freedom (d.f.) (t k -distribution). This note deals with the performance of standard normal variance estimators under the t k -distributions. It is shown that the relative ordering of the estimators is preserved for both the quadratic loss as well as the entropy loss irrespective of the d.f. and the sample size (provided the risks exist).  相似文献

LetX1,X2, ..., be real-valued random variables forming a strictly stationary sequence, and satisfying the basic requirement of being either pairwise positively quadrant dependent or pairwise negatively quadrant dependent. LetF^ be the marginal distribution function of theXips, which is estimated by the empirical distribution functionFn and also by a smooth kernel-type estimateFn, by means of the segmentX1, ...,Xn. These estimates are compared on the basis of their mean squared errors (MSE). The main results of this paper are the following. Under certain regularity conditions, the optimal bandwidth (in the MSE sense) is determined, and is found to be the same as that in the independent identically distributed case. It is also shown thatn MSE(Fn(t)) andnMSE (F^n(t)) tend to the same constant, asn→∞ so that one can not discriminate be tween the two estimates on the basis of the MSE. Next, ifi(n) = min {k∈{1, 2, ...}; MSE (Fk(t)) ≤ MSE (Fn(t))}, then it is proved thati(n)/n tends to 1, asn→∞. Thus, once again, one can not choose one estimate over the other in terms of their asymptotic relative efficiency. If, however, the squared bias ofF^n(t) tends to 0 sufficiently fast, or equivalently, the bandwidthhn satisfies the requirement thatnh3n→ 0, asn→∞, it is shown that, for a suitable choice of the kernel, (i(n) ?n)/(nhn) tends to a positive number, asn→∞ It follows that the deficiency ofFn(t) with respect toF^n(t),i(n) ?n, is substantial, and, actually, tends to ∞, asn→∞. A class of invariant Bayes rules is derived for testing homogeneity of k (≥2) different populations against (kt) slippage alternatives that some (unknown) subset of size t of the given populations has parameter larger than the remaining k-t, where t is a given integer between 1 and k-1. Consider an inhomogeneous Poisson process X on [0, T] whose unk-nown intensity function “switches” from a lower function g* to an upper function h* at some unknown point ?* that has to be identified. We consider two known continuous functions g and h such that g*(t) ? g(t) < h(t) ? h*(t) for 0 ? t ? T. We describe the behavior of the generalized likelihood ratio and Wald’s tests constructed on the basis of a misspecified model in the asymptotics of large samples. The power functions are studied under local alternatives and compared numerically with help of simulations. We also show the following robustness result: the Type I error rate is preserved even though a misspecified model is used to construct tests.  相似文献

Consider k( ? 2) normal populations with unknown means μ1, …, μk, and a common known variance σ2. Let μ[1] ? ??? ? μ[k] denote the ordered μi.The populations associated with the t(1 ? t ? k ? 1) largest means are called the t best populations. Hsu and Panchapakesan (2004) proposed and investigated a procedure RHPfor selecting a non empty subset of the k populations whose size is at most m(1 ? m ? k ? t) so that at least one of the t best populations is included in the selected subset with a minimum guaranteed probability P* whenever μ[k ? t + 1] ? μ[k ? t] ? δ*, where P*?and?δ* are specified in advance of the experiment. This probability requirement is known as the indifference-zone probability requirement. In the present article, we investigate the same procedure RHP for the same goal as before but when k ? t < m ? k ? 1 so that at least one of the t best populations is included in the selected subset with a minimum guaranteed probability P* whatever be the configuration of the unknown μi. The probability requirement in this latter case is termed the subset selection probability requirement. Santner (1976) proposed and investigated a different procedure (RS) based on samples of size n from each of the populations, considering both cases, 1 ? m ? k ? t and k ? t < m ? k. The special case of t = 1 was earlier studied by Gupta and Santner (1973) and Hsu and Panchapakesan (2002) for their respective procedures.  相似文献

In the general case we determine the ordinary LT of the function ? P(T b > t) in terms of certain LTs derived from the distribution function H(x; t) = P(X(t) ≤ x), considered as a function of both variables x and t. The importance of the normal distribution for fitting continuous data is well known. However, in many practical situations data distribution departs from normality. For example, the sample skewness and the sample kurtosis are far away from 0 and 3, respectively, which are nice properties of normal distributions. So, it is important to have formal tests of normality against any alternative. D'Agostino et al. [A suggestion for using powerful and informative tests of normality, Am. Statist. 44 (1990), pp. 316–321] review four procedures Z 2(g 1), Z 2(g 2), D and K 2 for testing departure from normality. The first two of these procedures are tests of normality against departure due to skewness and kurtosis, respectively. The other two tests are omnibus tests. An alternative to the normal distribution is a class of skew-normal distributions (see [A. Azzalini, A class of distributions which includes the normal ones, Scand. J. Statist. 12 (1985), pp. 171–178]). In this paper, we obtain a score test (W) and a likelihood ratio test (LR) of goodness of fit of the normal regression model against the skew-normal family of regression models. It turns out that the score test is based on the sample skewness and is of very simple form. The performance of these six procedures, in terms of size and power, are compared using simulations. The level properties of the three statistics LR, W and Z 2(g 1) are similar and close to the nominal level for moderate to large sample sizes. Also, their power properties are similar for small departure from normality due to skewness (γ1≤0.4). Of these, the score test statistic has a very simple form and computationally much simpler than the other two statistics. The LR statistic, in general, has highest power, although it is computationally much complex as it requires estimates of the parameters under the normal model as well as those under the skew-normal model. So, the score test may be used to test for normality against small departure from normality due to skewness. Otherwise, the likelihood ratio statistic LR should be used as it detects general departure from normality (due to both skewness and kurtosis) with, in general, largest power.  相似文献

In this study, we introduce the Heine process, {Xq(t), t > 0}, 0 < q < 1, where the random variable Xq(t), for every t > 0, represents the number of events (occurrences or arrivals) during a time interval (0, t]. The Heine process is introduced as a q-analog of the basic Poisson process. Also, in this study, we prove that the distribution of the waiting time Wν, q, ν ? 1, up to the νth arrival, is a q-Erlang distribution and the interarrival times Tk, q = Wk, q ? Wk ? 1, q,?k = 1, 2, …, ν with W0, q = 0 are independent and equidistributed with a q-Exponential distribution.  相似文献

This paper considers estimation of the function g in the model Yt = g(Xt ) + ?t when E(?t|Xt) ≠ 0 with nonzero probability. We assume the existence of an instrumental variable Zt that is independent of ?t, and of an innovation ηt = XtE(Xt|Zt). We use a nonparametric regression of Xt on Zt to obtain residuals ηt, which in turn are used to obtain a consistent estimator of g. The estimator was first analyzed by Newey, Powell & Vella (1999) under the assumption that the observations are independent and identically distributed. Here we derive a sample mean‐squared‐error convergence result for independent identically distributed observations as well as a uniform‐convergence result under time‐series dependence.  相似文献

A sequence of independent lifetimes X 1,…, X m , X m+1,…, X n were observed from inverse Weibull distribution with mean stress θ1 and reliability R 1(t 0) at time t 0 but later it was found that there was a change in the system at some point of time m and it is reflected in the sequence after X m by change in mean stress θ1 and in reliability R 2(t 0) at time t 0. The Bayes estimators of m, R 1(t 0) and R 2(t 0) are derived when a poor and a more detailed prior information is introduced into the inferential procedure. We study the problem of approximating a stochastic process Y = {Y(t: tT} with known and continuous covariance function R on the basis of finitely many observations Y(t 1,), …, Y(t n ). Dependent on the knowledge about the mean function, we use different approximations ? and measure their performance by the corresponding maximum mean squared error sub t∈T E(Y(t) ? ?(t))2. For a compact T ? ? p we prove sufficient conditions for the existence of optimal designs. Abstract

We introduce here the truncated version of the unified skew-normal (SUN) distributions. By considering a special truncations for both univariate and multivariate cases, we derive the joint distribution of consecutive order statistics X(r, ..., r + k) = (X(r), ..., X(r + K))T from an exchangeable n-dimensional normal random vector X. Further we show that the conditional distributions of X(r + j, ..., r + k) given X(r, ..., r + j ? 1), X(r, ..., r + k) given (X(r) > t)?and X(r, ..., r + k) given (X(r + k) < t) are special types of singular SUN distributions. We use these results to determine some measures in the reliability theory such as the mean past life (MPL) function and mean residual life (MRL) function.  相似文献
