In this paper, we propose a nonparametric method based on jackknife empirical likelihood ratio to test the equality of two variances. The asymptotic distribution of the test statistic has been shown to follow χ2 distribution with the degree of freedom 1. Simulations have been conducted to show the type I error and the power compared to Levene's test and F test under different distribution settings. The proposed method has been applied to a real data set to illustrate the testing procedure.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article we present a new solution to test for effects in unreplicated two-level factorial designs. The proposed test statistic, in case the error components are normally distributed, follows an F random variable, though our attention is on its nonparametric permutation version. The proposed procedure does not require any transformation of data such as residualization and it is exact for each effect and distribution-free. Our main aim is to discuss a permutation solution conditional to the original vector of responses. We give two versions of the same nonparametric testing procedure in order to control both the individual error rate and the experiment-wise error rate. A power comparison with Loughin and Noble's test is provided in the case of a unreplicated 24 full factorial design.  相似文献

The effect of a test compound on neurogenically induced vasodilation in marmosets was studied using a non‐standard experimental design with overlapping dosage groups and repeated measurements. In this study, the assumption that the data were normally distributed seemed inappropriate, so no traditional data analyses could be used. As an alternative, a new permutation trend test was designed based on the Jonckheere–Terpstra test statistic. This test protects the type I error without any further assumptions. Statistically significant differences in trend between treatment groups were detected. The effect of the compound was then shown across doses using subsequent Wilcoxon rank‐sum tests against ordered alternatives. In all, the permutation test proved quite useful in this context. This nonparametric approach to the analysis may easily be adapted to other applications. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Tests for the equality of variances are often needed in applications. In genetic studies the assumption of equal variances of continuous traits, measured in identical and fraternal twins, is crucial for heritability analysis. To test the equality of variances of traits, which are non-normally distributed, Levene [H. Levene, Robust tests for equality of variances, in Contributions to Probability and Statistics, I. Olkin, ed. Stanford University Press, Palo Alto, California, 1960, pp. 278–292] suggested a method that was surprisingly robust under non-normality, and the procedure was further improved by Brown and Forsythe [M.B. Brown and A.B. Forsythe, Robust tests for the equality of variances, J. Amer. Statis. Assoc. 69 (1974), pp. 364–367]. These tests assumed independence of observations. However, twin data are clustered – observations within a twin pair may be dependent due to shared genes and environmental factors. Uncritical application of the tests of Brown and Forsythe to clustered data may result in much higher than nominal Type I error probabilities. To deal with clustering we developed an extended version of Levene's test, where the ANOVA step is replaced with a regression analysis followed by a Wald-type test based on a clustered version of the robust Huber–White sandwich estimator of the covariance matrix. We studied the properties of our procedure using simulated non-normal clustered data and obtained Type I error rates close to nominal as well as reasonable powers. We also applied our method to oral glucose tolerance test data obtained from a twin study of the metabolic syndrome and related components and compared the results with those produced by the traditional approaches.  相似文献

It is shown that the nonparametric two-saniDle test recently proposed by Baumgartner, WeiB, Schindler (1998, Biometrics, 54, 1129-1135) does not control the type I error rate in case of small sample sizes. We investigate the exact permutation test based on their statistic and demonstrate that this test is almost not conservative. Comparing exact tests, the procedure based on the new statistic has a less conservative size and is, according to simulation results, more powerful than the often employed Wilcoxon test. Furthermore, the new test is also powerful with regard to less restrictive settings than the location-shift model. For example, the test can detect location-scale alternatives. Therefore, we use the test to create a powerful modification of the nonparametric location-scale test according to Lepage (1971, Biometrika, 58, 213-217). In this paper, a hypothesis test for heteroscedasticity is proposed in a nonparametric regression model. The test statistic, which uses the residuals from a nonparametric fit of the mean function, is based on an adaptation of the well-known Levene's test. Using the recent theory for analysis of variance when the number of factor levels goes to infinity, the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is established under the null hypothesis of homocedasticity and under local alternatives. Simulations suggest that the proposed test performs well in several situations, especially when the variance is a nonlinear function of the predictor.  相似文献

A simple test based on Gini's mean difference is proposed to test the hypothesis of equality of population variances. Using 2000 replicated samples and empirical distributions, we show that the test compares favourably with Bartlett's and Levene's test for the normal population. Also, it is more powerful than Bartlett's and Levene's tests for some alternative hypotheses for some non-normal distributions and more robust than the other two tests for large sample sizes under some alternative hypotheses. We also give an approximate distribution to the test statistic to enable one to calculate the nominal levels and P-values.  相似文献

Non-normality and heteroscedasticity are common in applications. For the comparison of two samples in the non-parametric Behrens–Fisher problem, different tests have been proposed, but no single test can be recommended for all situations. Here, we propose combining two tests, the Welch t test based on ranks and the Brunner–Munzel test, within a maximum test. Simulation studies indicate that this maximum test, performed as a permutation test, controls the type I error rate and stabilizes the power. That is, it has good power characteristics for a variety of distributions, and also for unbalanced sample sizes. Compared to the single tests, the maximum test shows acceptable type I error control.  相似文献

Early investigations of the effects of non-normality indicated that skewness has a greater effect on the distribution of t-statistic than does kurtosis. When the distribution is skewed, the actual p-values can be larger than the values calculated from the t-tables. Transformation of data to normality has shown good results in the case of univariate t-test. In order to reduce the effect of skewness of the distribution on normal-based t-test, one can transform the data and perform the t-test on the transformed scale. This method is not only a remedy for satisfying the distributional assumption, but it also turns out that one can achieve greater efficiency of the test. We investigate the efficiency of tests after a Box-Cox transformation. In particular, we consider the one sample test of location and study the gains in efficiency for one-sample t-test following a Box-Cox transformation. Under some conditions, we prove that the asymptotic relative efficiency of transformed t-test and Hotelling's T 2-test of multivariate location with respect to the same statistic based on untransformed data is at least one.  相似文献

In this paper we compare the power properties of some location tests. The most widely used such test is Student's t. Recently bootstrap-based tests have received much attention in the literature. A bootstrap version of the t-test will be included in our comparison. Finally, the nonparametric tests based on the idea of permuting the signs will be represented in our comparison. Again, we will initially concentrate on a version of that test based on the mean. The permutation tests predate the bootstrap by about fourty years. Theoretical results of Pitman (1937) and Bickel & Freedman (1981) show that these three methods are asymptotically equivalent if the underlying distribution is symmetric and has finite second moment. In the modern literature, the use of the nonparametric techniques is advocated on the grounds that the size of the test would be either exact, or more nearly exact. In this paper we report on a simulation study that compares the power curves and we show that it is not necessary to use resampling tests with a statistic based on the mean of the sample.  相似文献

In mixed models the mean square error (MSE) of empirical best linear unbiased estimators generally cannot be written in closed form. Unlike traditional methods of inference, parametric bootstrapping does not require approximation of this MSE or the test statistic distribution. Data were simulated to compare coverage rates for intervals based on the naïve MSE approximation and the method of Kenward and Roger, and parametric bootstrap intervals (Efron's percentile, Hall's percentile, bootstrap-t). The Kenward–Roger method performed best and the bootstrap-t almost as well. Intervals were also compared for a small set of real data. Implications for minimum sample size are discussed.  相似文献

We aimed to determine the most proper change measure among simple difference, percent, or symmetrized percent changes in simple paired designs. For this purpose, we devised a computer simulation program. Since distributions of percent and symmetrized percent change values are skewed and bimodal, paired t-test did not give good results according to Type I error and the test power. To be to able use percent change or symmetrized percent change as change measure, either the distribution of test statistics should be transformed to a known theoretical distribution by transformation methods or a new test statistic for these values should be developed.  相似文献

Bhattacharyya and Kioiz (1966) propose two multivariate nonparametric tests for monotone trend, one involving coordinate-wise Mann statistics and the other, coordinate-wise Spearman statistics. Dietz and Killeen (1981) propose a different test statistic based on coordinate-wise Mann statistics. The Pitman asymptotic relative efficiency of all three tests with respect to a normal theory competitor equals the cube root of the efficiency of a multivariate signed rank test with respect to Hotelling's T2. In this article, the small sample power of the nonparametric tests, the normal theory test, and a Bonferroni approach involving coordinate-wise univariate Mann or Spearman tests is examined in a simulation study. The Mann statistic of Dietz and Killeen and the Spearman statistic of Bhattacharyya and Klotz are found to perform well under both null and alternative hypotheses  相似文献

In this paper we consider a linear regression model with omitted relevant regressors and multivariatet error terms. The explicit formula for the Pitman nearness criterion of the Stein-rule (SR) estimator relative to the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator is derived. It is shown numerically that the dominance of the SR estimator over the OLS estimator under the Pitman nearness criterion can be extended to the case of the multivariatet error distribution when the specification error is not severe. It is also shown that the dominance of the SR estimator over the OLS estimator cannot be extended to the case of the multivariatet error distribution when the specification error is severe. In this paper, we investigate different procedures for testing the equality of two mean survival times in paired lifetime studies. We consider Owen’s M-test and Q-test, a likelihood ratio test, the paired t-test, the Wilcoxon signed rank test and a permutation test based on log-transformed survival times in the comparative study. We also consider the paired t-test, the Wilcoxon signed rank test and a permutation test based on original survival times for the sake of comparison. The size and power characteristics of these tests are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations under a frailty Weibull model. For less skewed marginal distributions, the Wilcoxon signed rank test based on original survival times is found to be desirable. Otherwise, the M-test and the likelihood ratio test are the best choices in terms of power. In general, one can choose a test procedure based on information about the correlation between the two survival times and the skewness of the marginal survival distributions.  相似文献

Summary This paper deals with nonparametric methods for combining dependent permutation or randomization tests. Particularly, they are nonparametric with respect to the underlying dependence structure. The methods are based on a without replacement resampling procedure (WRRP) conditional on the observed data, also called conditional simulation, which provide suitable estimates, as good as computing time permits, of the permutational distribution of any statistic. A class C of combining functions is characterized in such a way that all its members, under suitable and reasonable conditions, are found to be consistent and unbiased. Moreover, for some of its members, their almost sure asymptotic equivalence with respect to best tests, in particular cases, is shown. An applicational example to a multivariate permutationalt-paired test is also discussed.  相似文献

In the spirit of the recent work of Ahmad (1996) this paper introduces another class of Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon test statistics. The test statistic compares the r th and s th powers of the tail probabilities of the underlying probability distributions. The choice of r + s = 4 improves the Pitman efficiency for uniform, exponential, lognormal and normal distributions and keeps the same efficiency as the Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon test for logistic and double exponential distributions. The two-sample test is modified for the one-sample problem with symmetric underlying distribution.  相似文献

The Fisher exact test has been unjustly dismissed by some as ‘only conditional,’ whereas it is unconditionally the uniform most powerful test among all unbiased tests, tests of size α and with power greater than its nominal level of significance α. The problem with this truly optimal test is that it requires randomization at the critical value(s) to be of size α. Obviously, in practice, one does not want to conclude that ‘with probability x the we have a statistical significant result.’ Usually, the hypothesis is rejected only if the test statistic's outcome is more extreme than the critical value, reducing the actual size considerably.

The randomized unconditional Fisher exact is constructed (using Neyman–structure arguments) by deriving a conditional randomized test randomizing at critical values c(t) by probabilities γ(t), that both depend on the total number of successes T (the complete-sufficient statistic for the nuisance parameter—the common success probability) conditioned upon.

In this paper, the Fisher exact is approximated by deriving nonrandomized conditional tests with critical region including the critical value only if γ (t) > γ0, for a fixed threshold value γ0, such that the size of the unconditional modified test is for all value of the nuisance parameter—the common success probability—smaller, but as close as possible to α. It will be seen that this greatly improves the size of the test as compared with the conservative nonrandomized Fisher exact test.

Size, power, and p value comparison with the (virtual) randomized Fisher exact test, and the conservative nonrandomized Fisher exact, Pearson's chi-square test, with the more competitive mid-p value, the McDonald's modification, and Boschloo's modifications are performed under the assumption of two binomial samples.  相似文献

This paper proposes a class of non‐parametric test procedures for testing the null hypothesis that two distributions, F and G, are equal versus the alternative hypothesis that F is ‘more NBU (new better than used) at specified age t0’ than G. Using Hoeffding's two‐sample U‐statistic theorem, it establishes the asymptotic normality of the test statistics and produces a class of asymptotically distribution‐free tests. Pitman asymptotic efficacies of the proposed tests are calculated with respect to the location and shape parameters. A numerical example is provided for illustrative purposes.  相似文献
