In a class action litigation, actual damages are not known exactly and must be estimated. Various estimators are proposed and assessed by using a model that identifies possible sources of error. Estimators that have been used in practice are shown to be seriously biased. An empirical Bayes estimator and an empirical minimal mean squared error estimator are found to be more satisfactory methods for estimating damages.  相似文献

Searls in 1964 showed that when the coefficient of variation is known, the sample mean is dominated with respect to mean squared error by an improved estimator that makes use of that coefficient. In this article we illustrate that this is true for a general class of estimators. Expressions for the minimum mean squared error and the relative efficiency are given for general distributions. The improvement, as measured by relative efficiency, is seen to be independent of the form of the distribution.  相似文献

In this paper, assuming that there exist omitted explanatory variables in the specified model, we derive the exact formula for the mean squared error (MSE) of a general family of shrinkage estimators for each individual regression coefficient. It is shown analytically that when our concern is to estimate each individual regression coefficient, the positive-part shrinkage estimators have smaller MSE than the original shrinkage estimators under some conditions even when the relevant regressors are omitted. Also, by numerical evaluations, we showed the effects of our theorem for several specific cases. It is shown that the positive-part shrinkage estimators have smaller MSE than the original shrinkage estimators for wide region of parameter space even when there exist omitted variables in the specified model.  相似文献

Consider a linear regression model with some relevant regressors are unobservable. In such a situation, we estimate the model by using the proxy variables as regressors or by simply omitting the relevant regressors. In this paper, we derive the explicit formula of predictive mean squared error (PMSE) of a general family of shrinkage estimators of regression coefficients. It is shown analytically that the positive-part shrinkage estimator dominates the ordinary shrinkage estimator even when proxy variables are used in place of the unobserved variables. Also, as an example, our result is applied to the double k-class estimator proposed by Ullah and Ullah (Double k-class estimators of coefficients in linear regression. Econometrica. 1978;46:705–722). Our numerical results show that the positive-part double k-class estimator with proxy variables has preferable PMSE performance.  相似文献

A simple estimator is proposed for the dependence parameter for the Klotz model of Bernoulli trials with Markov dependence and it is compared with the ratio estimator given by Price and the approximate maximum likelihood estimator given by Klotz. The proposed estimator is shown to have considerably smaller bias than the other two estimators with comparable mean squared errors, and has all the large sample optimal properties that the other two estimators have.  相似文献

In this article, we introduce the iterative AK composite estimator for the Current Population Survey. This estimator adopts the AK composite estimator as the initial value and further makes good use of the intrinsic composite scheme of the AK composite estimator. We derive the mean squared error (MSE) formula for the iterative composite estimator and describe how to select the optimal tuning coefficients by minimising the MSE. Finally, we examine the proposed method through a simulation study.  相似文献

Under the assumption that the exponential distribution is a reasonable model for a given population, some shrinkage estimators for the location parameter based on type 1 and type II censored samples have been derived. It is shown that these estimators dominate maximum likelihood estimators (MLE's) asymptotically under the mean squared error (MSE) criterion. A Monte Carlo study shows a significant improvement of our estimators over MLE's in terms of MSE for small samples.  相似文献

A modified double stage shrinkage estimator has been proposed for the single parameter θ of a distribution function . It is shown to be locally better in comparison to the usual double stage shrinkage estimator in the sense of smaller mean squared error in a certain neighbourhood of prior estimate θo of θ.  相似文献

This paper studies a generalized Stein estimator of regression coefficients. The small disturbance approximations for the bias and mean square error matrix of the estimator are derived and a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the estimator to dominate the ordinary least squares estimator under the mean square error criterion.  相似文献

An estimator, λ is proposed for the parameter λ of the log-zero-Poisson distribution. While it is not a consistent estimator of λ in the usual statistical sense, it is shown to be quite close to the maximum likelihood estimates for many of the 35 sets of data on which it is tried. Since obtaining maximum likelihood estimates is extremely difficult for this and other contagious distributions, this estimate will act at least as an initial estimate in solving the likelihood equations iteratively. A lesson learned from this experience is that in the area of contagious distributions, variability is so large that attention should be focused directly on the mean squared error and not on consistency or unbiasedness, whether for small samples or for the asymptotic case. Sample sizes for some of the data considered in the paper are in hundreds. The fact that the estimator which is not a consistent estimator of λ is closer to the maximum likeli-hood estimator than the consistent moment estimator shows that the variability is large enough to not permit consistency to materialize even for such large sample sizes usually available in actual practice.  相似文献

In this paper, we define the nonlinear wavelet estimator of density for the right censoring model with the censoring indicator missing at random (MAR), and develop its asymptotic expression for mean integrated squared error (MISE). Unlike for kernel estimator, the MISE expression of the estimator is not affected by the presence of discontinuities in the curve. Meanwhile, asymptotic normality of the estimator is established. The proposed estimator can reduce to the estimator defined by Li [Non-linear wavelet-based density estimators under random censorship. J Statist Plann Inference. 2003;117(1):35–58] when the censoring indicator MAR does not occur and a bandwidth in non-parametric estimation is close to zero. Also, we define another two nonlinear wavelet estimators of the density. A simulation is done to show the performance of the three proposed estimators.  相似文献

The author considers the problem of finding exactly optimal sampling designs for estimating a second‐order, centered random process on the basis of finitely many observations. The value of the process at an unsampled point is estimated by the best linear unbiased estimator. A weighted integrated mean squared error or the maximum mean squared error is used to measure the performance of the estimator. The author presents a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for a design to be exactly optimal for processes with a product covariance structure. Expansions of these conditions lead to conditions for asymptotic optimality.  相似文献

An estimator for location, given a sample of only four or five observations, is proposed. The underlying distribution on of the sample may (with probability p) be contaminated by an outlier from a rightly-skewed distribution. The estimator minimizes the maximum mean squared error over all values of p. In fact, there exists an estimator which is unbiased in both the outlier - free and extreme-outlier cases, but its mean square error is substantially higher than the mean squared error for the minimax estimator. Mean squared errors for various underlying distributional situations are calculated and compared with those of other location estimators such as the mean and the median.  相似文献

This paper compares methods of estimation for the parameters of a Pareto distribution of the first kind to determine which method provides the better estimates when the observations are censored, The unweighted least squares (LS) and the maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) are presented for both censored and uncensored data. The MLE's are obtained using two methods, In the first, called the ML method, it is shown that log-likelihood is maximized when the scale parameter is the minimum sample value. In the second method, called the modified ML (MML) method, the estimates are found by utilizing the maximum likelihood value of the shape parameter in terms of the scale parameter and the equation for the mean of the first order statistic as a function of both parameters. Since censored data often occur in applications, we study two types of censoring for their effects on the methods of estimation: Type II censoring and multiple random censoring. In this study we consider different sample sizes and several values of the true shape and scale parameters.

Comparisons are made in terms of bias and the mean squared error of the estimates. We propose that the LS method be generally preferred over the ML and MML methods for estimating the Pareto parameter γ for all sample sizes, all values of the parameter and for both complete and censored samples. In many cases, however, the ML estimates are comparable in their efficiency, so that either estimator can effectively be used. For estimating the parameter α, the LS method is also generally preferred for smaller values of the parameter (α ≤4). For the larger values of the parameter, and for censored samples, the MML method appears superior to the other methods with a slight advantage over the LS method. For larger values of the parameter α, for censored samples and all methods, underestimation can be a problem.  相似文献

Although the poor performance of the mean as a location estimate when outliers are present in the data is well-known, there has b.een no clear consensus as to whether robust estimation or outlier detection Is the appropriate corrective procedure. In this paper, the estimation accuracy of the sample mean and 27 robust estimation and outlier detection techniques are compared by computer simulation. Both symmetric and asymmetric contamination are considered, It Is shown that the proper class of estimates depends on the degree of contaminations whether the contamination is symmetric or asymmetric, and the sample size. Several data sets considered previously by Rocke et.al. (1982) are also examined.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of estimating a general parameter using information on an auxiliary variable X. We have suggested a class of exponential-type ratio estimators for the parameter and its properties are studied. It is identified that the estimators due to Upadhyaya et al. [Journal of Statistical Theory and Practice (2011), 5(2), 285–302] and Yadav and Kadilar [Revista Columbiana de Estadistica, (2013), 36(1), 145–152] are members of the proposed estimator. We have also shown that the suggested estimator is more efficient than the estimators of Upadhyaya et al. (2011 Upadhyaya, L.N., Singh, H.P., Chatterjee, S., Yadav, R. (2011). Improved ratio and product exponential type estimators. J. Stat. Theo. Pract. 5 (2): 285302.[Taylor &; Francis Online] [Google Scholar]) and Yadav and Kadilar (2013 Yadav, S.K., Kadilar, C. (2013). Improved exponential type ratio estimator of population variance. Revis. Colum. de Estadist. 36(1): 145152. [Google Scholar]). Numerical illustration is provided in support of the present study.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper, assuming that the error terms follow a multivariate t distribution, we derive the exact formula for the predictive mean squared error (PMSE) of two different types of pretest estimators. It is shown analytically that one of the pretest estimator dominates the SR estimator if a critical value of the pretest is chosen appropriately. Also, we compare the PMSE of the pretest estimators with the MMSE, AMMSE, SR and PSR estimators by numerical evaluations. Our results show that the pretest estimators dominate the OLS estimator for all combinations when the degrees of freedom is not more than 5.  相似文献

The necessary and sufficient conditions for the inadmissibility of the ridge regression is discussed under two different criteria, namely, average loss and Pitman nearness. Although the two criteria are very different, same conclusions are obtained. The loss functions considered in this article are th likelihood loss function and the Mahalanobis loss function. The two loss functions are motivated from the point of view of classification of two normal populations. Under the Mahalanobis loss it is demonstrated that the ridge regression is always inadmissible as long as the errors are assumed to be symmetrically distributed about the origin.  相似文献
