Brief Introduction to the China Organizing Committee for the Fourth World Conference on Women

On January 28, 1991, the Chinese Government wrote to the United Nations, offering to host the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women. In March 1992, the 36th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women gratefully accepted the invitation of the Chinese government and decided to schedule the conference for September 4-15, 1995, in Beijing. The theme of the conference is to seek equality, development and peace through action. The secondary subjects include issues of employment, education and health. At that time, all the member countries of the United Nations will send the high-level gorernmental delegation to attend the conference. Meanwhile, the Non-Government Organizations Forum will be held as a subsidiary plenary to the conference. The year 1995 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the 2Oth anniversary of the UN International Women's Year and the lOth anniversary of the adoption of the Nairobi Strategy. This conference is an important event in UN women's affairs and

1.3 Million Chinese Xinhua News Agency,China's national news-wire organization,has reported that nearly 1.3 million Chinese have benefited from the Project of Water Cellar for Mothers during the past seven years.The project,which launched by the All-China Women's Federation and the China Women Development Fund in 2000,is aimed at providing safe water to 300 million people in drought- stricken rural areas of the country.The Chinese Government is committed to achieving the goal by 2020. More than 100,000 water cellars and 1,200 water supply facilities have been built in 23 provinces,municipalities and regions-including West China's Shaanxi and Gansu provinces,the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region,and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Beijing Silk Figurines

The Beijing silk figurine is a traditional Chinese handicraft. It originated in the Northern Song Dynasty and has been around for more than 1,000 years. BETWEEN November 8 to 17, 1995, the Chinese women's delegation, led by Ms. Kang Ling, member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), visited Gunma Prefecture, Japan, with short stays in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
