The identification of syntactical rules that govern nonverbal communication in humans and the determination of its semantic rules has often been viewed by researchers as two separate issues. In the present paper we depart from this traditional approach by studying the relationship among various nonverbal channels through their meaning. We propose that the functions which relate behavior to meaning are undulatory, and each is characterized by a different number of bending points. Supportive results of preliminary empirical testing are reported. Implications for cross-cultural research, development and psychopathology are discussed. The authors thank Sandra Tunis for her suggestions and Clara Mayo for her comments, as well as anonymous reviewers of this journal.  相似文献

In two social perception experiments, we explore the relationship between the social meaning and the semantic/pragmatic properties of the intensifier totally in American English. In Experiment 1, we show that totally is perceived as a more salient index of social identity categories – measured in terms of Age, Solidarity and Status attributes – when it targets a scalar dimension grounded in the speaker's attitude, as opposed to when it occurs in contexts where the scale is provided by the subsequent predicate. In Experiment 2, we show that the social indexicality of totally is even more salient in contexts in which the intensifier, by virtue of its pragmatic contribution, invites a stance of heightened proximity and convergence between the interlocutors. These results point to a principled connection between the semantic, pragmatic and personality‐based social meanings of totally, providing new insights into the dynamics whereby different layers of meaning conspire to determine what an expression ‘says’ when deployed in interaction.  相似文献

The present article wants to be an example of how spin can be profitably analysed not just as far as the content of the utterances is concerned but through their linguistic form as well, and of how mystification can be made transparent through the analysis of the language use of political texts at all levels, including morphology, grammar and syntax. The alleged ‘end of ideologies’ has brought about new forms of spin based on subtle ideological mystification that can be analysed through forms of language. One such example is the use of figures and expressions borrowed from the language of economics and business, considered the realms of ‘objectivity’.  相似文献
