The analysis of non-Gaussian time series by using state space models is considered from both classical and Bayesian perspectives. The treatment in both cases is based on simulation using importance sampling and antithetic variables; Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are not employed. Non-Gaussian disturbances for the state equation as well as for the observation equation are considered. Methods for estimating conditional and posterior means of functions of the state vector given the observations, and the mean-square errors of their estimates, are developed. These methods are extended to cover the estimation of conditional and posterior densities and distribution functions. The choice of importance sampling densities and antithetic variables is discussed. The techniques work well in practice and are computationally efficient. Their use is illustrated by applying them to a univariate discrete time series, a series with outliers and a volatility series.  相似文献

Shookri and Consul (1989) and Scollnik (1995) have previously considered the Bayesian analysis of an overdispersed generalized Poisson model. Scollnik (1995) also considered the Bayesian analysis of an ordinary Poisson and over-dispersed generalized Poisson mixture model. In this paper, we discuss the Bayesian analysis of these models when they are utilised in a regression context. Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are utilised, and an illustrative analysis is provided.  相似文献

Summary.  We consider the on-line Bayesian analysis of data by using a hidden Markov model, where inference is tractable conditional on the history of the state of the hidden component. A new particle filter algorithm is introduced and shown to produce promising results when analysing data of this type. The algorithm is similar to the mixture Kalman filter but uses a different resampling algorithm. We prove that this resampling algorithm is computationally efficient and optimal, among unbiased resampling algorithms, in terms of minimizing a squared error loss function. In a practical example, that of estimating break points from well-log data, our new particle filter outperforms two other particle filters, one of which is the mixture Kalman filter, by between one and two orders of magnitude.  相似文献

Gibbs sampling has had great success in the analysis of mixture models. In particular, the “latent variable” formulation of the mixture model greatly reduces computational complexity. However, one failing of this approach is the possible existence of almost-absorbing states, called trapping states, as it may require an enormous number of iterations to escape from these states. Here we examine an alternative approach to estimation in mixture models, one based on a Rao–Blackwellization argument applied to a latent-variable-based estimator. From this derivation we construct an alternative Monte Carlo sampling scheme that avoids trapping states.  相似文献

The adaptive rejection sampling (ARS) algorithm is a universal random generator for drawing samples efficiently from a univariate log-concave target probability density function (pdf). ARS generates independent samples from the target via rejection sampling with high acceptance rates. Indeed, ARS yields a sequence of proposal functions that converge toward the target pdf, so that the probability of accepting a sample approaches one. However, sampling from the proposal pdf becomes more computational demanding each time it is updated. In this work, we propose a novel ARS scheme, called Cheap Adaptive Rejection Sampling (CARS), where the computational effort for drawing from the proposal remains constant, decided in advance by the user. For generating a large number of desired samples, CARS is faster than ARS.  相似文献

Studies of the behaviors of glaciers, ice sheets, and ice streams rely heavily on both observations and physical models. Data acquired via remote sensing provide critical information on geometry and movement of ice over large sections of Antarctica and Greenland. However, uncertainties are present in both the observations and the models. Hence, there is a need for combining these information sources in a fashion that incorporates uncertainty and quantifies its impact on conclusions. We present a hierarchical Bayesian approach to modeling ice-stream velocities incorporating physical models and observations regarding velocity, ice thickness, and surface elevation from the North East Ice Stream in Greenland. The Bayesian model leads to interesting issues in model assessment and computation.  相似文献

This article presents a Bayesian approach to the regression analysis of truncated data, with a focus on zero-truncated counts from the Poisson distribution. The approach provides inference not only on the regression coefficients but also on the total sample size and the parameters of the covariate distribution. The theory is applied to some illegal immigrant data from The Netherlands. Several models are fitted with the aid of Markov chain Monte Carlo methods and assessed via posterior predictive p-values. Inferences are compared with those obtained elsewhere using other approaches.  相似文献

We propose a Bayesian stochastic search approach to selecting restrictions on multivariate regression models where the errors exhibit deterministic or stochastic conditional volatilities. We develop a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm that generates posterior restrictions on the regression coefficients and Cholesky decompositions of the covariance matrix of the errors. Numerical simulations with artificially generated data show that the proposed method is effective in selecting the data-generating model restrictions and improving the forecasting performance of the model. Applying the method to daily foreign exchange rate data, we conduct stochastic search on a VAR model with stochastic conditional volatilities.  相似文献

Bayesian models for relative archaeological chronology building   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For many years, archaeologists have postulated that the numbers of various artefact types found within excavated features should give insight about their relative dates of deposition even when stratigraphic information is not present. A typical data set used in such studies can be reported as a cross-classification table (often called an abundance matrix or, equivalently, a contingency table) of excavated features against artefact types. Each entry of the table represents the number of a particular artefact type found in a particular archaeological feature. Methodologies for attempting to identify temporal sequences on the basis of such data are commonly referred to as seriation techniques. Several different procedures for seriation including both parametric and non-parametric statistics have been used in an attempt to reconstruct relative chronological orders on the basis of such contingency tables. We develop some possible model-based approaches that might be used to aid in relative, archaeological chronology building. We use the recently developed Markov chain Monte Carlo method based on Langevin diffusions to fit some of the models proposed. Predictive Bayesian model choice techniques are then employed to ascertain which of the models that we develop are most plausible. We analyse two data sets taken from the literature on archaeological seriation.  相似文献

State space modelling and Bayesian analysis are both active areas of applied research in fisheries stock assessment. Combining these two methodologies facilitates the fitting of state space models that may be non-linear and have non-normal errors, and hence it is particularly useful for modelling fisheries dynamics. Here, this approach is demonstrated by fitting a non-linear surplus production model to data on South Atlantic albacore tuna ( Thunnus alalunga ). The state space approach allows for random variability in both the data (the measurement of relative biomass) and in annual biomass dynamics of the tuna stock. Sampling from the joint posterior distribution of the unobservables was achieved by using Metropolis-Hastings within-Gibbs sampling.  相似文献

The author studies state space models for multivariate binomial time series, focussing on the development of the Kalman filter and smoothing for state variables. He proposes a Monte Carlo approach employing the latent variable representation which transplants the classical Kalman filter and smoothing developed for Gaussian state space models to discrete models and leads to a conceptually simple and computationally convenient approach. The method is illustrated through simulations and concrete examples.  相似文献

Hidden Markov models form an extension of mixture models which provides a flexible class of models exhibiting dependence and a possibly large degree of variability. We show how reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques can be used to estimate the parameters as well as the number of components of a hidden Markov model in a Bayesian framework. We employ a mixture of zero-mean normal distributions as our main example and apply this model to three sets of data from finance, meteorology and geomagnetism.  相似文献

Bayesian analysis of mortality data   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Congdon argued that the use of parametric modelling of mortality data is necessary in many practical demographical problems. In this paper, we focus on a form of model introduced by Heligman and Pollard in 1980, and we adopt a Bayesian analysis, using Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation, to produce the posterior summaries required. This opens the way to richer, more flexible inference summaries and avoids the numerical problems that are encountered with classical methods. Particular methodologies to cope with incomplete life-tables and a derivation of joint lifetimes, median times to death and related quantities of interest are also presented.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates how Gaussian Markov random fields (conditional autoregressions) can be sampled quickly by using numerical techniques for sparse matrices. The algorithm is general and efficient, and expands easily to various forms for conditional simulation and evaluation of normalization constants. We demonstrate its use by constructing efficient block updates in Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms for disease mapping.  相似文献

A computational problem in many fields is to evaluate multiple integrals and expectations simultaneously. Consider probability distributions with unnormalized density functions indexed by parameters on a 2-dimensional grid, and assume that samples are simulated from distributions on a subgrid. Examples of such unnormalized density functions include the observed-data likelihoods in the presence of missing data and the prior times the likelihood in Bayesian inference. There are various methods using a single sample only or multiple samples jointly to compute each integral. Path sampling seems a compromise, using samples along a 1-dimensional path to compute each integral. However, different choices of the path lead to different estimators, which should ideally be identical. We propose calibrated estimators by the method of control variates to exploit such constraints for variance reduction. We also propose biquadratic interpolation to approximate integrals with parameters outside the subgrid, consistently with the calibrated estimators on the subgrid. These methods can be extended to compute differences of expectations through an auxiliary identity for path sampling. Furthermore, we develop stepwise bridge-sampling methods in parallel but complementary to path sampling. In three simulation studies, the proposed methods lead to substantially reduced mean squared errors compared with existing methods.  相似文献

On sequential Monte Carlo sampling methods for Bayesian filtering   总被引:145,自引:0,他引:145
In this article, we present an overview of methods for sequential simulation from posterior distributions. These methods are of particular interest in Bayesian filtering for discrete time dynamic models that are typically nonlinear and non-Gaussian. A general importance sampling framework is developed that unifies many of the methods which have been proposed over the last few decades in several different scientific disciplines. Novel extensions to the existing methods are also proposed. We show in particular how to incorporate local linearisation methods similar to those which have previously been employed in the deterministic filtering literature; these lead to very effective importance distributions. Furthermore we describe a method which uses Rao-Blackwellisation in order to take advantage of the analytic structure present in some important classes of state-space models. In a final section we develop algorithms for prediction, smoothing and evaluation of the likelihood in dynamic models.  相似文献

Summary.  The paper develops a Bayesian hierarchical model for estimating the catch at age of cod landed in Norway. The model includes covariate effects such as season and gear, and can also account for the within-boat correlation. The hierarchical structure allows us to account properly for the uncertainty in the estimates.  相似文献

Inference, quantile forecasting and model comparison for an asymmetric double smooth transition heteroskedastic model is investigated. A Bayesian framework in employed and an adaptive Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme is designed. A mixture prior is proposed that alleviates the usual identifiability problem as the speed of transition parameter tends to zero, and an informative prior for this parameter is suggested, that allows for reliable inference and a proper posterior, despite the non-integrability of the likelihood function. A formal Bayesian posterior model comparison procedure is employed to compare the proposed model with its two limiting cases: the double threshold GARCH and symmetric ARX GARCH models. The proposed methods are illustrated using both simulated and international stock market return series. Some illustrations of the advantages of an adaptive sampling scheme for these models are also provided. Finally, Bayesian forecasting methods are employed in a Value-at-Risk study of the international return series. The results generally favour the proposed smooth transition model and highlight explosive and smooth nonlinear behaviour in financial markets.  相似文献

This article serves as an introduction and survey for economists to the field of sequential Monte Carlo methods which are also known as particle filters. Sequential Monte Carlo methods are simulation-based algorithms used to compute the high-dimensional and/or complex integrals that arise regularly in applied work. These methods are becoming increasingly popular in economics and finance; from dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models in macro-economics to option pricing. The objective of this article is to explain the basics of the methodology, provide references to the literature, and cover some of the theoretical results that justify the methods in practice.  相似文献

We consider several alternatives to the continuous exponential-Poisson distribution in order to accommodate the occurrence of zeros. Three of these are modifications of the exponential-Poisson model. One of these remains a fully continuous model. The other models we consider are all semi-continuous models, each with a discrete point mass at zero and a continuous density on the positive values. All of the models are applied to two environmental data sets concerning precipitation, and their Bayesian analyses using MCMC are discussed. This discussion covers convergence of the MCMC simulations and model selection procedures and considerations.  相似文献
