This paper considers the problem of testing equality between two independent binomial proportions. Hwang and Yang (Statist. Sinica 11 (2001) 807) apply the Neyman–Pearson fundamental lemma and the estimated truth approach to derive optimal procedures, named expected p-values. This p-value has been shown to be identical to the mid p-value in Lancaster (J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. (1961) 223) for the one-sided test. For the two-sided test, the paper proves the usual two-sided mid p-value is identical to the expected p-value in the balanced sample case.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a new partially functional linear varying coefficient model, where the response is a scalar and some of the covariates are functional. By means of functional principal components analysis and local linear smoothing techniques, we obtain the estimators of coefficient functions of both function-valued variable and real-valued variables. Then the rates of convergence of the proposed estimators and the mean squared prediction error are established under some regularity conditions. Moreover, we develop a hypothesis test for the model and employ the bootstrap procedure to evaluate the null distribution of test statistic and the p-value of the test. At last, we illustrate the finite sample performance of our methods with some simulation studies and a real data application.  相似文献

This paper extends the classical methods of analysis of a two-way contingency table to the fuzzy environment for two cases: (1) when the available sample of observations is reported as imprecise data, and (2) the case in which we prefer to categorize the variables based on linguistic terms rather than as crisp quantities. For this purpose, the α-cuts approach is used to extend the usual concepts of the test statistic and p-value to the fuzzy test statistic and fuzzy p-value. In addition, some measures of association are extended to the fuzzy version in order to evaluate the dependence in such contingency tables. Some practical examples are provided to explain the applicability of the proposed methods in real-world problems.  相似文献

A procedure, based on sample spacings, is proposed for testing whether a univariate distribution is symmetric about some unknown value. The proposed test is a modification of a sign test suggested by Antille and Kersting [1977. Tests for symmetry. Z. Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie verw. Gebiete 39, 235–255], but unlike Antille and Kersting's test, our modified test is asymptotically distribution-free and is usable in practice. A simulation study indicates that the proposed test maintains the nominal level of significance, αα fairly accurately even for samples of size as small as 20, and a comparison with the classical test based on sample coefficient of skewness, shows that our test has good power for detecting different asymmetric distributions.  相似文献

In this article, the problem of testing the equality of coefficients of variation in a multivariate normal population is considered, and an asymptotic approach and a generalized p-value approach based on the concepts of generalized test variable are proposed. Monte Carlo simulation studies show that the proposed generalized p-value test has good empirical sizes, and it is better than the asymptotic approach. In addition, the problem of hypothesis testing and confidence interval for the common coefficient variation of a multivariate normal population are considered, and a generalized p-value and a generalized confidence interval are proposed. Using Monte Carlo simulation, we find that the coverage probabilities and expected lengths of this generalized confidence interval are satisfactory, and the empirical sizes of the generalized p-value are close to nominal level. In addition to point estimate for the probability of response in a two-stage design (e.g. Simon's two-stage design for binary endpoints), confidence limits should be computed and reported. The current method of inverting the p-value function to compute the confidence interval does not guarantee coverage probability in a two-stage setting. The existing exact approach to calculate one-sided limits is based on the overall number of responses to order the sample space. This approach could be conservative because many sample points have the same limits. We propose a new exact one-sided interval based on p-value for the sample space ordering. Exact intervals are computed by using binomial distributions directly, instead of a normal approximation. Both exact intervals preserve the nominal confidence level. The proposed exact interval based on the p-value generally performs better than the other exact interval with regard to expected length and simple average length of confidence intervals.  相似文献

In this article, we focus on the one-sided hypothesis testing for the univariate linear calibration, where a normally distributed response variable and an explanatory variable are involved. The observations of the response variable corresponding to known values of the explanatory variable are used to make inferences on a single unknown value of the explanatory variable. We apply the generalized inference to the calibration problem, and take the generalized p-value as the test statistic to develop a new p-value for one-sided hypothesis testing, which we refer to as the one-sided posterior predictive p-value. The behavior of the one-sided posterior predictive p-value is numerically compared with that of the generalized p-value, and simulations show that the proposed p-value is quite satisfactory in the frequentist performance.  相似文献

In this paper, the hypothesis testing and interval estimation for the intraclass correlation coefficients are considered in a two-way random effects model with interaction. Two particular intraclass correlation coefficients are described in a reliability study. The tests and confidence intervals for the intraclass correlation coefficients are developed when the data are unbalanced. One approach is based on the generalized p-value and generalized confidence interval, the other is based on the modified large-sample idea. These two approaches simplify to the ones in Gilder et al. [2007. Confidence intervals on intraclass correlation coefficients in a balanced two-factor random design. J. Statist. Plann. Inference 137, 1199–1212] when the data are balanced. Furthermore, some statistical properties of the generalized confidence intervals are investigated. Finally, some simulation results to compare the performance of the modified large-sample approach with that of the generalized approach are reported. The simulation results indicate that the modified large-sample approach performs better than the generalized approach in the coverage probability and expected length of the confidence interval.  相似文献

In a clinical trial comparing drug with placebo, where there are multiple primary endpoints, we consider testing problems where an efficacious drug effect can be claimed only if statistical significance is demonstrated at the nominal level for all endpoints. Under the assumption that the data are multivariate normal, the multiple endpoint-testing problem is formulated. The usual testing procedure involves testing each endpoint separately at the same significance level using two-sample t-tests, and claiming drug efficacy only if each t-statistic is significant. In this paper we investigate properties of this procedure. We show that it is identical to both an intersection union test and the likelihood ratio test. A simple expression for the p-value is given. The level and power function are studied; it is shown that the test may be conservative and that it is biased. Computable bounds for the power function are established.  相似文献

This article considers a one-way random effects model for assessing the proportion of workers whose mean exposures exceed the occupational exposure limit based on exposure measurements from a random sample of workers. Hypothesis testing and interval estimation for the relevant parameter of interest are proposed when the exposure data are unbalanced. The methods are based on the generalized p-value approach, and simplify to the ones in Krishnamoorthy and Mathews (J. Agri. Biol. Environ. Statist. 7 (2002) 440) when the data are balanced. The sizes and powers of the test are evaluated numerically. The numerical studies show that the proposed inferential procedures are satisfactory even for small samples. In this paper, we consider the problem of testing the mean vector in the multivariate setting where the dimension p is greater than the sample size n, namely a large p and small n problem. We propose a new scalar transform invariant test and show the asymptotic null distribution and power of the proposed test under weaker conditions than Srivastava (2009). We also present numerical studies including simulations and a real example of microarray data with comparison to existing tests developed for a large p and small n problem.  相似文献

The projection pursuit index defined by a sum of squares of the third and the fourth sample cumulants is known as the moment index proposed by Jones and Sibson [1987. What is projection pursuit? J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. A 150, 1–36]. The limiting distribution of the maximum of the moment index under the null hypothesis that the population is multivariate normal is shown to be the maximum of a Gaussian random field with a finite Karhunen–Loève expansion. An approximate formula for tail probability of the maximum, which corresponds to the p-value, is given by virtue of the tube method through determining Weyl's invariants of all degrees and the critical radius of the index manifold of the Gaussian random field.  相似文献

The density of the multiple correlation coefficient is derived by direct integration when the sample covariance matrix has a linear non-central distribution. Using the density, we deduce the null and non-null distribution of the multiple correlation coefficient when sampling from a mixture of two multivariate normal populations with the same covariance matrix. In this article, we study the varying coefficient partially nonlinear model with measurement errors in the nonparametric part. A local corrected profile nonlinear least-square estimation procedure is proposed and the asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators are established. Further, a generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) statistic is proposed to test whether the varying coefficients are constant. The asymptotic null distribution of the statistic is obtained and a residual-based bootstrap procedure is employed to compute the p-value of the statistic. Some simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed methods. The results show that the estimating and testing procedures work well in finite samples.  相似文献

We are firstly interested in testing the homogeneity of k mean vectors against two-sided restricted alternatives separately in multivariate normal distributions. This problem is a multivariate extension of Bartholomew (in Biometrica 46:328–335, 1959b) and an extension of Sasabuchi et al. (in Biometrica 70:465–472, 1983) and Kulatunga and Sasabuchi (in Mem. Fac. Sci., Kyushu Univ. Ser. A: Mathematica 38:151–161, 1984) to two-sided ordered hypotheses. We examine the problem of testing under two separate cases. One case is that covariance matrices are known, the other one is that covariance matrices are unknown but common. For the general case that covariance matrices are known the test statistic is obtained using the likelihood ratio method. When the known covariance matrices are common and diagonal, the null distribution of test statistic is derived and its critical values are computed at different significance levels. A Monte Carlo study is also presented to estimate the power of the test. A test statistic is proposed for the case when the common covariance matrices are unknown. Since it is difficult to compute the exact p-value for this problem of testing with the classical method when the covariance matrices are completely unknown, we first present a reformulation of the test statistic based on the orthogonal projections on the closed convex cones and then determine the upper bounds for its p-values. Also we provide a general nonparametric solution based on the permutation approach and nonparametric combination of dependent tests.  相似文献

The discussion on the use and misuse of p-values in 2016 by the American Statistician Association was a timely assertion that statistical concept should be properly used in science. Some researchers, especially the economists, who adopt significance testing and p-values to report their results, may felt confused by the statement, leading to misinterpretations of the statement. In this study, we aim to re-examine the accuracy of the p-value and introduce an alternative way for testing the hypothesis. We conduct a simulation study to investigate the reliability of the p-value. Apart from investigating the performance of p-value, we also introduce some existing approaches, Minimum Bayes Factors and Belief functions, for replacing p-value. Results from the simulation study confirm unreliable p-value in some cases and that our proposed approaches seem to be useful as the substituted tool in the statistical inference. Moreover, our results show that the plausibility approach is more accurate for making decisions about the null hypothesis than the traditionally used p-values when the null hypothesis is true. However, the MBFs of Edwards et al. [Bayesian statistical inference for psychological research. Psychol. Rev. 70(3) (1963), pp. 193–242]; Vovk [A logic of probability, with application to the foundations of statistics. J. Royal Statistical Soc. Series B (Methodological) 55 (1993), pp. 317–351] and Sellke et al. [Calibration of p values for testing precise null hypotheses. Am. This article proposes a modified p-value for the two-sided test of the location of the normal distribution when the parameter space is restricted. A commonly used test for the two-sided test of the normal distribution is the uniformly most powerful unbiased (UMPU) test, which is also the likelihood ratio test. The p-value of the test is used as evidence against the null hypothesis. Note that the usual p-value does not depend on the parameter space but only on the observation and the assumption of the null hypothesis. When the parameter space is known to be restricted, the usual p-value cannot sufficiently utilize this information to make a more accurate decision. In this paper, a modified p-value (also called the rp-value) dependent on the parameter space is proposed, and the test derived from the modified p-value is also shown to be the UMPU test.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article has two objectives. The first and narrower is to formalize the p-value function, which records all possible p-values, each corresponding to a value for whatever the scalar parameter of interest is for the problem at hand, and to show how this p-value function directly provides full inference information for any corresponding user or scientist. The p-value function provides familiar inference objects: significance levels, confidence intervals, critical values for fixed-level tests, and the power function at all values of the parameter of interest. It thus gives an immediate accurate and visual summary of inference information for the parameter of interest. We show that the p-value function of the key scalar interest parameter records the statistical position of the observed data relative to that parameter, and we then describe an accurate approximation to that p-value function which is readily constructed.  相似文献

Sequential designs can be used to save computation time in implementing Monte Carlo hypothesis tests. The motivation is to stop resampling if the early resamples provide enough information on the significance of the p-value of the original Monte Carlo test. In this paper, we consider a sequential design called the B-value design proposed by Lan and Wittes and construct the sequential design bounding the resampling risk, the probability that the accept/reject decision is different from the decision from complete enumeration. For the B-value design whose exact implementation can be done by using the algorithm proposed in Fay, Kim and Hachey, we first compare the expected resample size for different designs with comparable resampling risk. We show that the B-value design has considerable savings in expected resample size compared to a fixed resample or simple curtailed design, and comparable expected resample size to the iterative push out design of Fay and Follmann. The B-value design is more practical than the iterative push out design in that it is tractable even for small values of resampling risk, which was a challenge with the iterative push out design. We also propose an approximate B-value design that can be constructed without using a specially developed software and provides analytic insights on the choice of parameter values in constructing the exact B-value design.  相似文献
