Stute (1993, Consistent estimation under random censorship when covariables are present. Journal of Multivariate Analysis 45, 89–103) proposed a new method to estimate regression models with a censored response variable using least squares and showed the consistency and asymptotic normality for his estimator. This article proposes a new bootstrap-based methodology that improves the performance of the asymptotic interval estimation for the small sample size case. Therefore, we compare the behavior of Stute's asymptotic confidence interval with that of several confidence intervals that are based on resampling bootstrap techniques. In order to build these confidence intervals, we propose a new bootstrap resampling method that has been adapted for the case of censored regression models. We use simulations to study the improvement the performance of the proposed bootstrap-based confidence intervals show when compared to the asymptotic proposal. Simulation results indicate that, for the new proposals, coverage percentages are closer to the nominal values and, in addition, intervals are narrower.  相似文献

Using the data from the AIDS Link to Intravenous Experiences cohort study as an example, an informative censoring model was used to characterize the repeated hospitalization process of a group of patients. Under the informative censoring assumption, the estimators of the baseline rate function and the regression parameters were shown to be related to a latent variable. Hence, it becomes impractical to directly estimate the unknown quantities in the moments of the estimators for the bandwidth selection of a smoothing estimator and the construction of confidence intervals, which are respectively based on the asymptotic mean squared errors and the asymptotic distributions of the estimators. To overcome these difficulties, we develop a random weighted bootstrap procedure to select appropriate bandwidths and to construct approximated confidence intervals. One can see that our method is simple and faster to implement from a practical point of view, and is at least as accurate as other bootstrap methods. In this article, it is shown that the proposed method is useful through the performance of a Monte Carlo simulation. An application of our procedure is also illustrated by a recurrent event sample of intravenous drug users for inpatient cares over time.  相似文献

We consider the problem of choosing among a class of possible estimators by selecting the estimator with the smallest bootstrap estimate of finite sample variance. This is an alternative to using cross-validation to choose an estimator adaptively. The problem of a confidence interval based on such an adaptive estimator is considered. We illustrate the ideas by applying the method to the problem of choosing the trimming proportion of an adaptive trimmed mean. It is shown that a bootstrap adaptive trimmed mean is asymptotically normal with an asymptotic variance equal to the smallest among trimmed means. The asymptotic coverage probability of a bootstrap confidence interval based on such adaptive estimators is shown to have the nominal level. The intervals based on the asymptotic normality of the estimator share the same asymptotic result, but have poor small-sample properties compared to the bootstrap intervals. A small-sample simulation demonstrates that bootstrap adaptive trimmed means adapt themselves rather well even for samples of size 10.  相似文献

For the survey population total of a variable y when values of an auxiliary variable x are available a popular procedure is to employ the ratio estimator on drawing a simple random sample without replacement (SRSWOR) especially when the size of the sample is large. To set up a confidence interval for the total, various variance estimators are available to pair with the ratio estimator. We add a few more variance estimators studded with asymptotic design-cum-model properties. The ratio estimator is traditionally known to be appropriate when the regression of y on x is linear through the origin and the conditional variance of y given x is proportional to x. But through a numerical exercise by simulation we find the confidence intervals to fare better if the regression line deviates from the origin or if the conditional variance is disproportionate with x. Also, comparing the confidence intervals using alternative variance estimators we find our newly proposed variance estimators to yield favourably competitive results.  相似文献

The authors study the application of the bootstrap to a class of estimators which converge at a nonstandard rate to a nonstandard distribution. They provide a theoretical framework to study its asymptotic behaviour. A simulation study shows that in the case of an estimator such as Chernoff's estimator of the mode, usually the basic bootstrap confidence intervals drastically undercover while the percentile bootstrap intervals overcover. This is a rare instance where basic and percentile confidence intervals, which have exactly the same length, behave in a very different way. In the case of Chernoff's estimator, if the distribution is symmetric, it is possible to bootstrap from a smooth symmetric estimator of the distribution for which the basic bootstrap confidence intervals will have the claimed coverage probability while the percentile bootstrap interval will have an asymptotic coverage of 1!  相似文献

Exact confidence intervals for variances rely on normal distribution assumptions. Alternatively, large-sample confidence intervals for the variance can be attained if one estimates the kurtosis of the underlying distribution. The method used to estimate the kurtosis has a direct impact on the performance of the interval and thus the quality of statistical inferences. In this paper the author considers a number of kurtosis estimators combined with large-sample theory to construct approximate confidence intervals for the variance. In addition, a nonparametric bootstrap resampling procedure is used to build bootstrap confidence intervals for the variance. Simulated coverage probabilities using different confidence interval methods are computed for a variety of sample sizes and distributions. A modification to a conventional estimator of the kurtosis, in conjunction with adjustments to the mean and variance of the asymptotic distribution of a function of the sample variance, improves the resulting coverage values for leptokurtically distributed populations.  相似文献

In this article, we propose some procedures to get confidence intervals for the reliability in stress-strength models. The confidence intervals are obtained either through a parametric bootstrap procedure or using asymptotic results, and are applied to the particular context of two independent normal random variables. The performance of these estimators and other known approximate estimators are empirically checked through a simulation study which considers several scenarios.  相似文献

Empirical Likelihood-based Inference in Linear Models with Missing Data   总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18
The missing response problem in linear regression is studied. An adjusted empirical likelihood approach to inference on the mean of the response variable is developed. A non-parametric version of Wilks's theorem for the adjusted empirical likelihood is proved, and the corresponding empirical likelihood confidence interval for the mean is constructed. With auxiliary information, an empirical likelihood-based estimator with asymptotic normality is defined and an adjusted empirical log-likelihood function with asymptotic χ2 is derived. A simulation study is conducted to compare the adjusted empirical likelihood methods and the normal approximation methods in terms of coverage accuracies and average lengths of the confidence intervals. Based on biases and standard errors, a comparison is also made between the empirical likelihood-based estimator and related estimators by simulation. Our simulation indicates that the adjusted empirical likelihood methods perform competitively and the use of auxiliary information provides improved inferences.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with model selection and model averaging procedures for partially linear single-index models. The profile least squares procedure is employed to estimate regression coefficients for the full model and submodels. We show that the estimators for submodels are asymptotically normal. Based on the asymptotic distribution of the estimators, we derive the focused information criterion (FIC), formulate the frequentist model average (FMA) estimators and construct proper confidence intervals for FMA estimators and FIC estimator, a special case of FMA estimators. Monte Carlo studies are performed to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the full model, and over models chosen by AIC or BIC in terms of coverage probability and mean squared error. Our approach is further applied to real data from a male fertility study to explore potential factors related to sperm concentration and estimate the relationship between sperm concentration and monobutyl phthalate.  相似文献

The main objective of this work is to evaluate the performance of confidence intervals, built using the deviance statistic, for the hyperparameters of state space models. The first procedure is a marginal approximation to confidence regions, based on the likelihood test, and the second one is based on the signed root deviance profile. Those methods are computationally efficient and are not affected by problems such as intervals with limits outside the parameter space, which can be the case when the focus is on the variances of the errors. The procedures are compared to the usual approaches existing in the literature, which includes the method based on the asymptotic distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator, as well as bootstrap confidence intervals. The comparison is performed via a Monte Carlo study, in order to establish empirically the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The results show that the methods based on the deviance statistic possess a better coverage rate than the asymptotic and bootstrap procedures.  相似文献

Bootstrap in functional linear regression   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have considered the functional linear model with scalar response and functional explanatory variable. One of the most popular methodologies for estimating the model parameter is based on functional principal components analysis (FPCA). In recent literature, weak convergence for a wide class of FPCA-type estimates has been proved, and consequently asymptotic confidence sets can be built. In this paper, we have proposed an alternative approach in order to obtain pointwise confidence intervals by means of a bootstrap procedure, for which we have obtained its asymptotic validity. Besides, a simulation study allows us to compare the practical behaviour of asymptotic and bootstrap confidence intervals in terms of coverage rates for different sample sizes.  相似文献

In this article, a new class of variance function estimators is proposed in the setting of heteroscedastic nonparametric regression models. To obtain a variance function estimator, the main proposal is to smooth the product of the response variable and residuals as opposed to the squared residuals. The asymptotic properties of the proposed methodology are investigated in order to compare its asymptotic behavior with that of the existing methods. The finite sample performance of the proposed estimator is studied through simulation studies. The effect of the curvature of the mean function on its finite sample behavior is also discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose two new estimators of treatment effects in regression discontinuity designs. These estimators can aid understanding of the existing estimators such as the local polynomial estimator and the partially linear estimator. The first estimator is the partially polynomial estimator which extends the partially linear estimator by further incorporating derivative differences of the conditional mean of the outcome on the two sides of the discontinuity point. This estimator is related to the local polynomial estimator by a relocalization effect. Unlike the partially linear estimator, this estimator can achieve the optimal rate of convergence even under broader regularity conditions. The second estimator is an instrumental variable estimator in the fuzzy design. This estimator will reduce to the local polynomial estimator if higher order endogeneities are neglected. We study the asymptotic properties of these two estimators and conduct simulation studies to confirm the theoretical analysis.  相似文献

Based on record values, point and interval estimators are proposed in this paper for the parameters of a general lower-truncated family of distributions. Maximum likelihood and bias-corrected estimators are obtained for unknown model parameters. Based on a sufficient and complete statistic, the bias-corrected estimator is also shown to be uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator. Different exact confidence intervals and exact confidence regions are constructed for the both model and truncated parameters, and other confidence interval estimates based on asymptotic distribution theory and bootstrap approaches are obtained as well. Finally, two real-life examples and a numerical study are presented to illustrate the performance of our methods.  相似文献

This paper investigates estimation of parameters in a combination of the multivariate linear model and growth curve model, called a generalized GMANOVA model. Making analogy between the outer product of data vectors and covariance yields an approach to directly do least squares to covariance. An outer product least squares estimator of covariance (COPLS estimator) is obtained and its distribution is presented if a normal assumption is imposed on the error matrix. Based on the COPLS estimator, two-stage generalized least squares estimators of the regression coefficients are derived. In addition, asymptotic normalities of these estimators are investigated. Simulation studies have shown that the COPLS estimator and two-stage GLS estimators are alternative competitors with more efficiency in the sense of sample mean, standard deviations and mean of the variance estimates to the existing ML estimator in finite samples. An example of application is also illustrated.  相似文献

The problem of constructing confidence intervals to estimate the mean in a two-stage nested model is considered. Several approximate intervals, which are based on both linear and nonlinear estimators of the mean are investigated. In particular, the method of bootstrap is used to correct the bias in the ‘usual’ variance of the nonlinear estimators. It is found that the intervals based on the nonlinear estimators did not achieve the nominal confidence coefficient for designs involving a small number of groups. Further, it turns out that the intervals are generally conservative, especially at small values of the intraclass correlation coefficient, and that the intervals based on the nonlinear estimators are more conservative than those based on the linear estimators. Compared with the others, the intervals based on the unweighted mean of the group means performed well in terms of coverage and length. For small values of the intraclass correlation coefficient, the ANOVA estimators of the variance components are recommended, otherwise the unweighted means estimator of the between groups variance component should be used. If one is fortunate enough to have control over the design, he is advised to increase the number of groups, as opposed to increasing group sizes, while avoiding groups of size one or two.  相似文献

We use bias-reduced estimators of high quantiles of heavy-tailed distributions, to introduce a new estimator for the mean in the case of infinite second moment. The asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator is established and checked in a simulation study, by four of the most popular goodness-of-fit tests. The accuracy of the resulting confidence intervals is evaluated as well. We also investigate the finite sample behavior and compare our estimator with some versions of Peng's estimator of the mean (namely those based on Hill, t-Hill and Huisman et al. extreme value index estimators). Moreover, we discuss the robustness of the tail index estimators used in this paper. Finally, our estimation procedure is applied to the well-known Danish fire insurance claims data set, to provide confidence bounds for the means of weekly and monthly maximum losses over a period of 10 years.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with model averaging procedure for varying-coefficient partially linear models with missing responses. The profile least-squares estimation process and inverse probability weighted method are employed to estimate regression coefficients of the partially restricted models, in which the propensity score is estimated by the covariate balancing propensity score method. The estimators of the linear parameters are shown to be asymptotically normal. Then we develop the focused information criterion, formulate the frequentist model averaging estimators and construct the corresponding confidence intervals. Some simulation studies are conducted to examine the finite sample performance of the proposed methods. We find that the covariate balancing propensity score improves the performance of the inverse probability weighted estimator. We also demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model averaging estimators over those of existing strategies in terms of mean squared error and coverage probability. Finally, our approach is further applied to a real data example.  相似文献

This paper proposes procedures to provide confidence intervals (CIs) for reliability in stress–strength models, considering the particular case of a bivariate normal set-up. The suggested CIs are obtained by employing either asymptotic variances of maximum-likelihood estimators or a bootstrap procedure. The coverage and the accuracy of these intervals are empirically checked through a simulation study and compared with those of another proposal in the literature. An application to real data is provided.  相似文献

We study the focused information criterion and frequentist model averaging and their application to post‐model‐selection inference for weighted composite quantile regression (WCQR) in the context of the additive partial linear models. With the non‐parametric functions approximated by polynomial splines, we show that, under certain conditions, the asymptotic distribution of the frequentist model averaging WCQR‐estimator of a focused parameter is a non‐linear mixture of normal distributions. This asymptotic distribution is used to construct confidence intervals that achieve the nominal coverage probability. With properly chosen weights, the focused information criterion based WCQR estimators are not only robust to outliers and non‐normal residuals but also can achieve efficiency close to the maximum likelihood estimator, without assuming the true error distribution. Simulation studies and a real data analysis are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.  相似文献
