Despite recent trends away from the traditional medical model of service delivery, there appears to be a continuing reluctance among some rehabilitation professionals to fully enable people with disabilities to co-manage their own rehabilitation programmes. These same professionals may remain unaware that their behaviour discourages their clients from taking greater responsibility for solving problems and achieving goals of living. Contradictions in the beliefs and behaviour of service providers is, at grass roots level, perhaps exemplified by their adherence to formal case-team meetings which exclude service recipients. The need to re-define and alter the format of these conferences is the focus of this paper.

An interview with Susie Orbach highlights the trajectory of her career and current thinking on body image issues and eating disorders. Dr. Orbach’s work in this area as a clinical social worker, psychoanalyst, best-selling author and social activist has spanned three decades. In this interview she reflects on her earlier books, Fat is a Feminist Issue and Hunger Strike: An Anorectic’s Struggle as a Metaphor for Our Age, and discusses her current work and perspectives within the context of contemporary culture.     

M.S.W.'s speak: Experiences in agency and private supervision

This paper derives from a study of the views of twenty-one M.S.W.'s about experiences in agency and private supervision. The contributions, from the perspective of the subjects, of both these sources to professional development are highlighted. Some of the less positively perceived elements of these two forms of supervision are also illuminated.

Most authors discuss sexual deviations (often called psychosexual abnormalities or perversions*¹) under the general heading of neuroses or personality disorders. There appears to be a general consensus among psychiatrists that sexual deviations are ways in which sexual gratification is obtained, mainly or exclusively, without penile-vaginal intercourse. It is felt that the primary aims of sexuality are pleasure and reproduction and that this, at some stage, ought to include coitus between a male and female. A new definition is proposed in Part II.     

Infusing Web-Based Content Centers into an M.S.W. Curriculum: A Faculty and Student Development Project

ABSTRACT

Web-based content centers are collections of scholarly digital resources that can be used to support learning in a variety of contexts. Through a recent pilot project, faculty created web-based content centers to support key curriculum areas of an M.S.W. program. Additionally the project aimed at developing technology skills of faculty designers and student users of course support materials. Positive student learning outcomes and increased faculty use of technology resulted. Project outcomes also included the building of virtual learning communities.
