Recent developments in higher-order asymptotic theory for statistical inference have emphasized the fundamental role of the likelihood function in providing accurate approximations to cumulative distribution functions. This paper summarizes the main results, with an emphasis on classes of problems for which relatively easily implemented solutions exist. A survey of the literature indicates the large number of problems solved and solvable by this method. Generalizations and extensions, with suggestions for further development, are considered.  相似文献

In this paper, we seek to establish asymptotic results for selective inference procedures removing the assumption of Gaussianity. The class of selection procedures we consider are determined by affine inequalities, which we refer to as affine selection procedures. Examples of affine selection procedures include selective inference along the solution path of the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), as well as selective inference after fitting the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator at a fixed value of the regularization parameter. We also consider some tests in penalized generalized linear models. Our result proves asymptotic convergence in the high‐dimensional setting where n<p, and n can be of a logarithmic factor of the dimension p for some procedures.  相似文献

For a controlled branching process (CBP) with offspring distribution belonging to the power series family, the asymptotic normality of the posterior distribution of the basic parameter and the offspring mean is proved. As practical applications, we calculate asymptotic high probability density credibility sets for the offspring mean and we provide a rule to make inference about the value of this parameter. Moreover, the asymptotic posterior normality of the respective parameters of two classical branching models, namely the standard Galton–Watson process and the Galton–Watson process with immigration, is derived as particular cases of the CBP.  相似文献

针对纵向数据半参数模型E(y|x,t)=XTβ+f(t),采用惩罚二次推断函数方法同时估计模型中的回归参数β和未知光滑函数f(t)。首先利用截断幂函数基对未知光滑函数进行基函数展开近似,然后利用惩罚样条的思想构造关于回归参数和基函数系数的惩罚二次推断函数,最小化惩罚二次推断函数便可得到回归参数和基函数系数的惩罚二次推断函数估计。理论结果显示,估计结果具有相合性和渐近正态性,通过数值方法也得到了较好的模拟结果。  相似文献

Many inference problems lead naturally to a marginal or conditional measure of departure that depends on a nuisance parameter. As a device for first-order elimination of the nuisance parameter, we suggest averaging with respect to an exact or approximate confidence distribution function. It is shown that for many standard problems where an exact answer is available by other methods, the averaging method reproduces the exact answer. Moreover, for the gamma-mean problem, where the exact answer is not explicitly available, the averaging method gives results that agree closely with those obtained from higher-order asymptotic methods. Examples are discussed; detailed asymptotic calculations will be examined elsewhere.  相似文献

We propose a survey weighted quadratic inference function method for the analysis of data collected from longitudinal surveys, as an alternative to the survey weighted generalized estimating equation method. The procedure yields estimators of model parameters, which are shown to be consistent and have a limiting normal distribution. Furthermore, based on the inference function, a pseudolikelihood ratio type statistic for testing a composite hypothesis on model parameters and a statistic for testing the goodness of fit of the assumed model are proposed. We establish their asymptotic distributions as weighted sums of independent chi‐squared random variables and obtain Rao‐Scott corrections to those statistics leading to a chi‐squared distribution, approximately. We examine the performance of the proposed methods in a simulation study.  相似文献

The performance of commonly used asymptotic inference procedures for the random-effects model used in meta analysis relies on the number of studies. When the number of studies is moderate or small, the exact inference procedure is more reliable than the asymptotic counterparts. However, the related numerical computation may be demanding and an obstacle of routine use of the exact method. In this paper, we proposed a novel numerical algorithm for constructing the exact 95% confidence interval of the location parameter in the random-effects model. The algorithm is much faster than the naive method and may greatly facilitate the use of the more appropriate exact inference procedure in meta analysis. Numerical studies and real data examples are used to illustrate the advantage of the proposed method.  相似文献

In Rubin (1976) the missing at random (MAR) and missing completely at random (MCAR) conditions are discussed. It is concluded that the MAR condition allows one to ignore the missing data mechanism when doing likelihood or Bayesian inference but also that the stronger MCAR condition is in some sense the weakest generally sufficient condition allowing (conditional) frequentist inference while ignoring the missing data mechanism. In this paper it is shown that (a slightly strengthened version of) the MAR condition is sufficient to yield ordinary large sample results for estimators and test statistics and thus may be used for (asymptotic) frequentist inference.  相似文献

The paper gives an overview of modern likelihood asymptotics with emphasis on results and applicability. Only parametric inference in well-behaved models is considered and the theory discussed leads to highly accurate asymptotic tests for general smooth hypotheses. The tests are refinements of the usual asymptotic likelihood ratio tests, and for one-dimensional hypotheses the test statistic is known as r *, introduced by Barndorff-Nielsen. Examples illustrate the applicability and accuracy as well as the complexity of the required computations. Modern likelihood asymptotics has developed by merging two lines of research: asymptotic ancillarity is the basis of the statistical development, and saddlepoint approximations or Laplace-type approximations have simultaneously developed as the technical foundation. The main results and techniques of these two lines will be reviewed, and a generalization to multi-dimensional tests is developed. In the final part of the paper further problems and ideas are presented. Among these are linear models with non-normal error, non-parametric linear models obtained by estimation of the residual density in combination with the present results, and the generalization of the results to restricted maximum likelihood and similar structured models.  相似文献

Asymptotic variance plays an important role in the inference using interval estimate of attributable risk. This paper compares asymptotic variances of attributable risk estimate using the delta method and the Fisher information matrix for a 2×2 case–control study due to the practicality of applications. The expressions of these two asymptotic variance estimates are shown to be equivalent. Because asymptotic variance usually underestimates the standard error, the bootstrap standard error has also been utilized in constructing the interval estimates of attributable risk and compared with those using asymptotic estimates. A simulation study shows that the bootstrap interval estimate performs well in terms of coverage probability and confidence length. An exact test procedure for testing independence between the risk factor and the disease outcome using attributable risk is proposed and is justified for the use with real-life examples for a small-sample situation where inference using asymptotic variance may not be valid.  相似文献

This paper provides a Bayesian treatment of the problem of inference about the reliability of a multicomponent stress-strength system which functions if s or more of k identical components simultaneously operate. All stresses and strengths are assumed to be independent, exponentially distributed random variables. In this paper, we propose a smoothed Q‐learning algorithm for estimating optimal dynamic treatment regimes. In contrast to the Q‐learning algorithm in which nonregular inference is involved, we show that, under assumptions adopted in this paper, the proposed smoothed Q‐learning estimator is asymptotically normally distributed even when the Q‐learning estimator is not and its asymptotic variance can be consistently estimated. As a result, inference based on the smoothed Q‐learning estimator is standard. We derive the optimal smoothing parameter and propose a data‐driven method for estimating it. The finite sample properties of the smoothed Q‐learning estimator are studied and compared with several existing estimators including the Q‐learning estimator via an extensive simulation study. We illustrate the new method by analyzing data from the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness–Alzheimer's Disease (CATIE‐AD) study.  相似文献

Since the publication of the seminal paper by Cox (1972), proportional hazard model has become very popular in regression analysis for right censored data. In observational studies, treatment assignment may depend on observed covariates. If these confounding variables are not accounted for properly, the inference based on the Cox proportional hazard model may perform poorly. As shown in Rosenbaum and Rubin (1983), under the strongly ignorable treatment assignment assumption, conditioning on the propensity score yields valid causal effect estimates. Therefore we incorporate the propensity score into the Cox model for causal inference with survival data. We derive the asymptotic property of the maximum partial likelihood estimator when the model is correctly specified. Simulation results show that our method performs quite well for observational data. The approach is applied to a real dataset on the time of readmission of trauma patients. We also derive the asymptotic property of the maximum partial likelihood estimator with a robust variance estimator, when the model is incorrectly specified.  相似文献

This article derives explicit expressions for the asymptotic variances of the maximum likelihood and continuously-updated GMM estimators in models that may not satisfy the fundamental asset-pricing restrictions in population. The proposed misspecification-robust variance estimators allow the researcher to conduct valid inference on the model parameters even when the model is rejected by the data. While the results for the maximum likelihood estimator are only applicable to linear asset-pricing models, the asymptotic distribution of the continuously-updated GMM estimator is derived for general, possibly nonlinear, models. The large corrections in the asymptotic variances, that arise from explicitly incorporating model misspecification in the analysis, are illustrated using simulations and an empirical application.  相似文献

We focus on the nonparametric regression of a scalar response on a functional explanatory variable. As an alternative to the well-known Nadaraya-Watson estimator for regression function in this framework, the locally modelled regression estimator performs very well [cf. [Barrientos-Marin, J., Ferraty, F., and Vieu, P. (2010), ‘Locally Modelled Regression and Functional Data’, Journal of Nonparametric Statistics, 22, 617–632]. In this paper, the asymptotic properties of locally modelled regression estimator for functional data are considered. The mean-squared convergence as well as asymptotic normality for the estimator are established. We also adapt the empirical likelihood method to construct the point-wise confidence intervals for the regression function and derive the Wilk's phenomenon for the empirical likelihood inference. Furthermore, a simulation study is presented to illustrate our theoretical results.  相似文献

Abstract.  Methodology for Bayesian inference is considered for a stochastic epidemic model which permits mixing on both local and global scales. Interest focuses on estimation of the within- and between-group transmission rates given data on the final outcome. The model is sufficiently complex that the likelihood of the data is numerically intractable. To overcome this difficulty, an appropriate latent variable is introduced, about which asymptotic information is known as the population size tends to infinity. This yields a method for approximate inference for the true model. The methods are applied to real data, tested with simulated data, and also applied to a simple epidemic model for which exact results are available for comparison.  相似文献

Probability transform-based inference, for example, characteristic function-based inference, is a good alternative to likelihood methods when the probability density function is unavailable or intractable. However, a set of grids needs to be determined to provide an effective estimator based on probability transforms. This paper is concerned with parametric inference based on adaptive selection of grids. By employing a closeness measure to evaluate the asymptotic variance of the transform-based estimator, we propose a statistical inference procedure, accompanied with adaptive grid selection. The selection algorithm aims for a small set of grids, and yet the resulting estimator can be highly efficient. Generally, the asymptotic variance is very close to that of the maximum likelihood estimator.  相似文献
