Summary It has been argued that an interactionist approach illuminatesthe relationship between public issues and private troubles.However, the model has been fundamentally criticized as beingtheoretically empty. The value of the approach is examined bythe analysis of a practice example. Summary Between january 1980 and December 1982, a team of probationofficers attempted a new approach to probation practice whichhas been described in an earlier article. The present articleoutlines the types of social enquiry reports which resultedfrom the experiment, and in a quqntitative analysis of the team'sreports, compares the relationship between recommendation andoutcome in the different types. Ireland, BT41 4AB Summary This paper describes a pilot study of a behavioural-cognitivegroup programme for adult psychiatric patients who presentedwith a variety of problems. The time-limited groups aimed toteach behavioural analysis skills through the selection, observationand treatment of a target problem by each group member. Resultsof ten such groups are analysed and indicate that members couldoperationally define a problem and implement behavioural changewhich was maintained at six month follow up. However, deficitsin formal behavioural analysis skills were evidenced.  相似文献

Summary In order to develop a typology of indicators for long-term treatmentin foster care, a cluster analysis has been carried out on theitems of a standardized questionnaire which is used by fostercare centres in the province of Zuid-Holland. Two types of indicationfor placement have emerged from the present study. In combinationwith the foster child's age, these two types discriminate effectivelybetween unsuccessful, prematurely terminated placements aftereighteen months and continued placements. It is claimed thatthe employment of this procedure can effect a reduction in thenumber of unsuccessful, prematurely terminated placements.  相似文献

Summary This paper describes the development of a recording system foruse by social workers in the long term care of elderly peopleat home. The system can be used by individual staff to plottheir caseload activities and by management in considering problemsof resource deployment. The system consists of Assessment Document,Periodic Case Reviews, a Monitoring Chart and Costing information.The analysis of a cohort of cases in the early phase of theircare are discussed and the possible range of uses for such arecording system considered.  相似文献

Summary This paper explores experience of the development of a groupdynamics workshop in a post-graduate course for student socialworkers. The background to the workshops is outlined with referenceto students, course staff and consultant staff. A brief summaryof different conceptual approaches to group dynamics trainingis offered in order to clarify terminology and methods. Summary Interactions with other organisations and occupations in thewelfare network form an indispensable part of contemporary socialwork practice. Yet attempts at collaboration between socialworkers and others are beset by obstacles which create instabilityand potential disorder. The usual organisational responses tosuch problems are of limited relevance. Even so, day-to-daycollaboration is accomplished. This is explained and analysedas a negotiated order which is underpinned by interdependencebut framed by inequality of power and authority. Summary The study examined and compared the racial identity attitudesand self-esteem of 40 African Caribbean adolescents in residentialcare in a city in the West Midlands and a comparison group of40 African Caribbean adolescents attending a multiracial comprehensiveschool in the city. The respondents were administered the Rosenberg(Rosenberg, 1965) Self-Esteem Scale, the Racial Identity AttitudeScale (Parham and Helms, 1981) and a Demographic Questionnaire.Multiple regression analysis and analysis of variance were usedto analyse the data. Both respondents in residential care andthe comparison group primarily endorsed positive racial attitudes.Self-esteem and racial identity attitudes were positively related.The study assessed the implications of the findings for socialworkers working with black children and adolescents.  相似文献

Summary This study collates and comments upon the views of main-gradeprobation officers in West Yorkshire on the subject of staffsupervision. It shows that a majority of officers hold positiveopinions about supervision, provided that it is related to assistingthem in their main task of helping clients. The use of supervisionas a means of administrative control over standards of workis acceptable only to a minority of officers. The article includesa detailed analysis of the content of officers' own definitionsof supervision from which many examples are quoted. It showsalso the degree of importance accorded to supervision in relationto other probation officer and senior probation officer functions.  相似文献

Summary The concept of social conflict is examined in terms of its usefulnessin refining and extending social casework theory. Attentionis given to the influence of the homeostatic approach to caseworkpractice versus an approach utilizing a conflict orientation.Primary emphasis is given to Coser's sociological theory ofconflict in an effort to discover heuristic concepts which areconsidered to be applicable in the practice of social casework.Specifically, seven of Coser's original sixteen propositionsrelated to conflict theory have been selected for analysis.It is concluded that a conflict orientation would serve to clarifythe functional aspects of conflict as they relate to the dyadiccasework relationship  相似文献

Summary This article attempts to locate the ‘moral panic’concerning child abuse within the context of broader changesin the material conditions and ideological forces in Britainin the early 1970s. It argues that the development of a senseof social anxiety amongst certain sections of the populationand the appeal of the New Right were crucial in the processof establishing the problem as the major issue for social workers.As a consequence social workers have been constrained into amore punitive and interventive relationship with children andfamilies, particularly the poor. The analysis illustrates thatthe way social workers experience role conflict and tensionin this area of their work reflects much wider historical andcultural confusions and contradictions.  相似文献

Summary The provision of a social work service depends significantlyupon assessment of the social situation of clients as determinedby social workers. It is argued that the social worker's ‘understanding’of the social situation is framed within a particular way ofthinking about cause and effect. Three different models of suchthinking are used in practice. They are identified as the linearmodel, systems analysis and the management model. The originsand attributes of each model are described and related to thesocial, economic and political environments which have influencedtheir separate developments. Summary Some aspects of the triangular relationship between the state,the university and social work are explored. Is it appropriatefor social work to be taught in a university? What are the implicationsof the fact that well over 90% of social workers are employedby the state? And what above all, is the nature of the relationshipbetween critical analysis as the corner-stone of scholarshipand the need to prepare the social work student to functioneffectively in the real world? It is argued that the respectiveattitudes of higher education and government towards socialwork are influenced by the nature of social work's relationshipwith sociology, but that this in turn has not been fruitfulfor practice development.  相似文献

Summary An analysis of the relationship between five types of adoptivefamily structure and the adjustment of adopted children, whenseven to seven and a half years of age, indicates that the presenceof a natural child born after adoption to a previously childlesscouple is associated with serious behavioural dysfunction inthe adopted child. In this type of family the proportion ofboys so maladjusted is 10 times greater than in the modal familytype comprising adopted children only. In terms of specificmanifestations, a greater proportion show habit and sleep disturbance,and problems of behaviour and eating. The findings are discussedcritically, and potential fertility is suggested as a criterionfor the selection of applicant couples who should be counselledto defer their adoption.  相似文献
