The recent emergence of gambling problems among youth around the world is alarming. For those most vulnerable in our society, children and adolescents, problem gambling presents a serious public health concern. Our current knowledge and understanding of the magnitude of the problem and its considerable impact upon the well-being of youth compels us to respond in a timely and effective manner. A general public health paradigm to gambling, originally articulated by Wynne (1997) and Korn and Shaffer (1999), highlights the importance of such an approach. However, a conceptual model and framework to understand and specifically address youth problem gambling within a public health framework is needed. This article articulates a theoretical framework and model that will help facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive, multi-level health promotion and prevention strategy for youth problem gambling.  相似文献

The social security programs that have become widely established in countries around the globe vary greatly in their design features. The difference among the programs invites questions regarding the relative strength of their designs. One hundred and sixty-four programs are assessed on three design dimensions: benefit eligibility, qualifying eligibility criteria, and benefit provision. The analysis shows that the best-designed old-age programs can be found in Western Europe and Australasia.  相似文献

The incidence of bulimia is on the rise, while its knowledge base is presently limited. The author attempts to contribute to our knowledge by sharing clinical case material which highlights characteristics of the disorder. Bulimia has been connected with anorexia nervosa as well as being considered a separate diagnostic category. Such differences of opinion reflect the newness of the knowledge and account for the variation of prognostic judgments about the disorder. Etiology of the disorder is still under investigation by researchers. Possible etiological factors are suggested. The cluster of these psychosocial factors in the patient's history include reinforcement at an early age by a parent for self care, other directedness, and the overevaluation of food in the family.  相似文献

The concept of centrality is often invoked in social network analysis, and diverse indices have been proposed to measure it. This paper develops a unified framework for the measurement of centrality. All measures of centrality assess a node's involvement in the walk structure of a network. Measures vary along four key dimensions: type of nodal involvement assessed, type of walk considered, property of walk assessed, and choice of summary measure. If we cross-classify measures by type of nodal involvement (radial versus medial) and property of walk assessed (volume versus length), we obtain a four-fold polychotomization with one cell empty which mirrors Freeman's 1979 categorization. At a more substantive level, measures of centrality summarize a node's involvement in or contribution to the cohesiveness of the network. Radial measures in particular are reductions of pair-wise proximities/cohesion to attributes of nodes or actors. The usefulness and interpretability of radial measures depend on the fit of the cohesion matrix to the one-dimensional model. In network terms, a network that is fit by a one-dimensional model has a core-periphery structure in which all nodes revolve more or less closely around a single core. This in turn implies that the network does not contain distinct cohesive subgroups. Thus, centrality is shown to be intimately connected with the cohesive subgroup structure of a network.  相似文献

This article explicates the concept of respect as philosophers discuss and utilize it. After identifying the main questions about respect which philosophers have raised and addressed, including questions about the nature, importance, objects, grounds, psychological and behavioral elements, and implications of respect, I sketch an account of the most general elements of the attitude of respect and identify different kinds of respect and their connections to and differences from similar attitudes such as esteem and honor. I then discuss the most influential account of respect for persons, that of Immanuel Kant. The final section explores the importance of respect in moral, social and political life and in moral, social, and political theory, and highlights some implications for issues in applied ethics and social and political theory.  相似文献

Space is fundamental in any form of communal life; space is fundamental in any exercise of power (Foucault 1984:252).

The road goes regularly through groves of nutmeg and lofty kenari-tree, the latter of which serve as protection for the former. Banda [Besar] is one single mountain ridge for the whole length, stretching from East to West with sides sloping into the sea. The aforementioned plantations spread over each side of these mountains and to a marked height, yes, until almost the peaks. Our tour is completely via the mountains and mostly always within the shade of these lovely groves, yet you see scarcely a single kind of vegetation other than the nutmeg- and kanari-tree (Olivier 1979[1827]:100–101).  相似文献

Language is closely related to characters. Chinese characters differ from English words. So in the course of cross-cultural translation, they may cause mislooking because of spelling;mislistening because of pronunciation and miscomprehending because of semantic meaning, and so on. As a matter of fact, a translator may face many difficulties of linguistic transfer, difficulties that are sometimes almost insurmountable. The author uses some examples from the two English versions to analyze and illustrate it.  相似文献
