We propose a new class of state space models for longitudinal discrete response data where the observation equation is specified in an additive form involving both deterministic and random linear predictors. These models allow us to explicitly address the effects of trend, seasonal or other time-varying covariates while preserving the power of state space models in modeling serial dependence in the data. We develop a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm to carry out statistical inference for models with binary and binomial responses, in which we invoke de Jong and Shephard’s (Biometrika 82(2):339–350, 1995) simulation smoother to establish an efficient sampling procedure for the state variables. To quantify and control the sensitivity of posteriors on the priors of variance parameters, we add a signal-to-noise ratio type parameter in the specification of these priors. Finally, we illustrate the applicability of the proposed state space mixed models for longitudinal binomial response data in both simulation studies and data examples.  相似文献

In the expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm for maximum likelihood estimation from incomplete data, Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods have been used in change-point inference for a long time when the expectation step is intractable. However, the conventional MCMC algorithms tend to get trapped in local mode in simulating from the posterior distribution of change points. To overcome this problem, in this paper we propose a stochastic approximation Monte Carlo version of EM (SAMCEM), which is a combination of adaptive Markov chain Monte Carlo and EM utilizing a maximum likelihood method. SAMCEM is compared with the stochastic approximation version of EM and reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo version of EM on simulated and real datasets. The numerical results indicate that SAMCEM can outperform among the three methods by producing much more accurate parameter estimates and the ability to achieve change-point positions and estimates simultaneously.  相似文献

Bayesian estimation for population parameter under progressive type-I interval censoring is studied via Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation. Two competitive statistical models, generalized exponential and Weibull distributions for modeling a real data set containing 112 patients with plasma cell myeloma, are studied for illustration. In model selection, a novel Bayesian procedure which involves a mixture model is proposed. Then the mix proportion is estimated through MCMC and used as the model selection criterion.  相似文献

Summary.  Likelihood inference for discretely observed Markov jump processes with finite state space is investigated. The existence and uniqueness of the maximum likelihood estimator of the intensity matrix are investigated. This topic is closely related to the imbedding problem for Markov chains. It is demonstrated that the maximum likelihood estimator can be found either by the EM algorithm or by a Markov chain Monte Carlo procedure. When the maximum likelihood estimator does not exist, an estimator can be obtained by using a penalized likelihood function or by the Markov chain Monte Carlo procedure with a suitable prior. The methodology and its implementation are illustrated by examples and simulation studies.  相似文献

The main goal in this paper is to develop and apply stochastic simulation techniques for GARCH models with multivariate skewed distributions using the Bayesian approach. Both parameter estimation and model comparison are not trivial tasks and several approximate and computationally intensive methods (Markov chain Monte Carlo) will be used to this end. We consider a flexible class of multivariate distributions which can model both skewness and heavy tails. Also, we do not fix tail behaviour when dealing with fat tail distributions but leave it subject to inference.  相似文献

Summary.  Structured additive regression models are perhaps the most commonly used class of models in statistical applications. It includes, among others, (generalized) linear models, (generalized) additive models, smoothing spline models, state space models, semiparametric regression, spatial and spatiotemporal models, log-Gaussian Cox processes and geostatistical and geoadditive models. We consider approximate Bayesian inference in a popular subset of structured additive regression models, latent Gaussian models , where the latent field is Gaussian, controlled by a few hyperparameters and with non-Gaussian response variables. The posterior marginals are not available in closed form owing to the non-Gaussian response variables. For such models, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods can be implemented, but they are not without problems, in terms of both convergence and computational time. In some practical applications, the extent of these problems is such that Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling is simply not an appropriate tool for routine analysis. We show that, by using an integrated nested Laplace approximation and its simplified version, we can directly compute very accurate approximations to the posterior marginals. The main benefit of these approximations is computational: where Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms need hours or days to run, our approximations provide more precise estimates in seconds or minutes. Another advantage with our approach is its generality, which makes it possible to perform Bayesian analysis in an automatic, streamlined way, and to compute model comparison criteria and various predictive measures so that models can be compared and the model under study can be challenged.  相似文献

For big data analysis, high computational cost for Bayesian methods often limits their applications in practice. In recent years, there have been many attempts to improve computational efficiency of Bayesian inference. Here we propose an efficient and scalable computational technique for a state-of-the-art Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, namely, Hamiltonian Monte Carlo. The key idea is to explore and exploit the structure and regularity in parameter space for the underlying probabilistic model to construct an effective approximation of its geometric properties. To this end, we build a surrogate function to approximate the target distribution using properly chosen random bases and an efficient optimization process. The resulting method provides a flexible, scalable, and efficient sampling algorithm, which converges to the correct target distribution. We show that by choosing the basis functions and optimization process differently, our method can be related to other approaches for the construction of surrogate functions such as generalized additive models or Gaussian process models. Experiments based on simulated and real data show that our approach leads to substantially more efficient sampling algorithms compared to existing state-of-the-art methods.  相似文献

This paper proposes and investigates a class of Markov Poisson regression models in which Poisson rate functions of covariates are conditional on unobserved states which follow a finite-state Markov chain. Features of the proposed model, estimation, inference, bootstrap confidence intervals, model selection and other implementation issues are discussed. Monte Carlo studies suggest that the proposed estimation method is accurate and reliable for single- and multiple-subject time series data; the choice of starting probabilities for the Markov process has little eff ect on the parameter estimates; and penalized likelihood criteria are reliable for determining the number of states. Part 2 provides applications of the proposed model.  相似文献

In this article, we propose to evaluate and compare Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to estimate the parameters in a generalized extreme value model. We employed the Bayesian approach using traditional Metropolis-Hastings methods, Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC), and Riemann manifold HMC (RMHMC) methods to obtain the approximations to the posterior marginal distributions of interest. Applications to real datasets and simulation studies provide evidence that the extra analytical work involved in Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithms is compensated by a more efficient exploration of the parameter space.  相似文献

Bayesian inference for fractionally integrated exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (FIEGARCH) models using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods is described. A simulation study is presented to assess the performance of the procedure, under the presence of long-memory in the volatility. Samples from FIEGARCH processes are obtained upon considering the generalized error distribution (GED) for the innovation process. Different values for the tail-thickness parameter ν are considered covering both scenarios, innovation processes with lighter (ν > 2) and heavier (ν < 2) tails than the Gaussian distribution (ν = 2). A comparison between the performance of quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) and MCMC procedures is also discussed. An application of the MCMC procedure to estimate the parameters of a FIEGARCH model for the daily log-returns of the S&P500 U.S. stock market index is provided.  相似文献

Summary. Motivated by the autologistic model for the analysis of spatial binary data on the two-dimensional lattice, we develop efficient computational methods for calculating the normalizing constant for models for discrete data defined on the cylinder and lattice. Because the normalizing constant is generally unknown analytically, statisticians have developed various ad hoc methods to overcome this difficulty. Our aim is to provide computationally and statistically efficient methods for calculating the normalizing constant so that efficient likelihood-based statistical methods are then available for inference. We extend the so-called transition method to find a feasible computational method of obtaining the normalizing constant for the cylinder boundary condition. To extend the result to the free-boundary condition on the lattice we use an efficient path sampling Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme. The methods are generally applicable to association patterns other than spatial, such as clustered binary data, and to variables taking three or more values described by, for example, Potts models.  相似文献

A new Markov chain Monte Carlo method for the Bayesian analysis of finite mixture distributions with an unknown number of components is presented. The sampler is characterized by a state space consisting only of the number of components and the latent allocation variables. Its main advantage is that it can be used, with minimal changes, for mixtures of components from any parametric family, under the assumption that the component parameters can be integrated out of the model analytically. Artificial and real data sets are used to illustrate the method and mixtures of univariate and of multivariate normals are explicitly considered. The problem of label switching, when parameter inference is of interest, is addressed in a post-processing stage.  相似文献

In this paper, we proposed a new two-parameter lifetime distribution with increasing failure rate. The new distribution arises on a latent complementary risk scenario. The properties of the proposed distribution are discussed, including a formal proof of its density function and an explicit algebraic formulae for its quantiles and survival and hazard functions. Also, we have discussed inference aspects of the model proposed via Bayesian inference by using Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation. A simulation study investigates the frequentist properties of the proposed estimators obtained under the assumptions of non-informative priors. Further, some discussions on models selection criteria are given. The developed methodology is illustrated on a real data set.  相似文献

Sampling from the posterior distribution in generalized linear mixed models   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Generalized linear mixed models provide a unified framework for treatment of exponential family regression models, overdispersed data and longitudinal studies. These problems typically involve the presence of random effects and this paper presents a new methodology for making Bayesian inference about them. The approach is simulation-based and involves the use of Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques. The usual iterative weighted least squares algorithm is extended to include a sampling step based on the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm thus providing a unified iterative scheme. Non-normal prior distributions for the regression coefficients and for the random effects distribution are considered. Random effect structures with nesting required by longitudinal studies are also considered. Particular interests concern the significance of regression coefficients and assessment of the form of the random effects. Extensions to unknown scale parameters, unknown link functions, survival and frailty models are outlined.  相似文献

In this paper the exponentiated-Weibull model is modified to model the possibility that long-term survivors are present in the data. The modification leads to an exponentiated-Weibull mixture model which encompasses as special cases the exponential and Weibull mixture models typically used to model such data. Inference for the model parameters is considered via maximum likelihood and also via Bayesian inference by using Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation. Model comparison is considered by using likelihood ratio statistics and also the pseudo Bayes factor, which can be computed by using the generated samples. An example of a data set is considered for which the exponentiated-Weibull mixture model presents a better fit than the Weibull mixture model. Results of simulation studies are also reported, which show that the likelihood ratio statistics seems to be somewhat deficient for small and moderate sample sizes.  相似文献

This paper develops a space‐time statistical model for local forecasting of surface‐level wind fields in a coastal region with complex topography. The statistical model makes use of output from deterministic numerical weather prediction models which are able to produce forecasts of surface wind fields on a spatial grid. When predicting surface winds at observing stations , errors can arise due to sub‐grid scale processes not adequately captured by the numerical weather prediction model , and the statistical model attempts to correct for these influences. In particular , it uses information from observing stations within the study region as well as topographic information to account for local bias. Bayesian methods for inference are used in the model , with computations carried out using Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms. Empirical performance of the model is described , illustrating that a structured Bayesian approach to complicated space‐time models of the type considered in this paper can be readily implemented and can lead to improvements in forecasting over traditional methods.  相似文献

Likelihood‐based inference with missing data is challenging because the observed log likelihood is often an (intractable) integration over the missing data distribution, which also depends on the unknown parameter. Approximating the integral by Monte Carlo sampling does not necessarily lead to a valid likelihood over the entire parameter space because the Monte Carlo samples are generated from a distribution with a fixed parameter value. We consider approximating the observed log likelihood based on importance sampling. In the proposed method, the dependency of the integral on the parameter is properly reflected through fractional weights. We discuss constructing a confidence interval using the profile likelihood ratio test. A Newton–Raphson algorithm is employed to find the interval end points. Two limited simulation studies show the advantage of the Wilks inference over the Wald inference in terms of power, parameter space conformity and computational efficiency. A real data example on salamander mating shows that our method also works well with high‐dimensional missing data.  相似文献

Synthetic likelihood is an attractive approach to likelihood-free inference when an approximately Gaussian summary statistic for the data, informative for inference about the parameters, is available. The synthetic likelihood method derives an approximate likelihood function from a plug-in normal density estimate for the summary statistic, with plug-in mean and covariance matrix obtained by Monte Carlo simulation from the model. In this article, we develop alternatives to Markov chain Monte Carlo implementations of Bayesian synthetic likelihoods with reduced computational overheads. Our approach uses stochastic gradient variational inference methods for posterior approximation in the synthetic likelihood context, employing unbiased estimates of the log likelihood. We compare the new method with a related likelihood-free variational inference technique in the literature, while at the same time improving the implementation of that approach in a number of ways. These new algorithms are feasible to implement in situations which are challenging for conventional approximate Bayesian computation methods, in terms of the dimensionality of the parameter and summary statistic.  相似文献

Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling is a numerically intensive simulation technique which has greatly improved the practicality of Bayesian inference and prediction. However, MCMC sampling is too slow to be of practical use in problems involving a large number of posterior (target) distributions, as in dynamic modelling and predictive model selection. Alternative simulation techniques for tracking moving target distributions, known as particle filters, which combine importance sampling, importance resampling and MCMC sampling, tend to suffer from a progressive degeneration as the target sequence evolves. We propose a new technique, based on these same simulation methodologies, which does not suffer from this progressive degeneration.  相似文献

We consider the issue of sampling from the posterior distribution of exponential random graph (ERG) models and other statistical models with intractable normalizing constants. Existing methods based on exact sampling are either infeasible or require very long computing time. We study a class of approximate Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling schemes that deal with this issue. We also develop a new Metropolis–Hastings kernel to sample sparse large networks from ERG models. We illustrate the proposed methods on several examples.  相似文献
