Abstract

To determine whether health sciences faculty are sufficiently knowledgeable about copyright, fair use, and related precepts in their use of materials for teaching and research purposes, librarians at two comparable institutions, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), conducted a Web survey regarding copyright knowledge among their respective faculty. Responses were similar from both institutions despite the fact that UTHSCSA faculty had access to a more coordinated copyright education effort. Most respondents self-reported at least a limited familiarity with copyright law and fair use.  相似文献

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and University of Toronto (U of T) describe their respective library-driven programs to reduce the cost of course materials for students—the Affordable Course Materials Initiative (ACMI) at UCLA and the Zero-to-Low-Cost-Course Program (ZTLCC) at U of T. With the same goal of reducing costs by leveraging existing library resources, each library approaches that cost reduction differently. UCLA uses financial incentives to help drive faculty participation in reducing costs, whereas U of T works to reduce overlap in licensing costs while encouraging use of these already-paid-for resources. The following provides an overview of each program along with guidelines for implementing a similar program.  相似文献

Department and program evaluation plans at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire were examined to see if these documents provide evidence that could be used to justify supporting the publication of peer-reviewed open access articles toward tenure and promotion. In an earlier study, the authors reveal that faculty members at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire are more unaware of open access publishing than their counterparts at larger universities. These findings dovetail with other studies that show that faculty members are reluctant to publish in open access journals because of concerns about the quality of those journals. The existing body of scholarship suggests that tenure-line faculty fear publishing in open access journals because it could adversely impact their chances of promotion and tenure. The authors of this current study sought to determine if department and program evaluation plans could influence negative perceptions faculty have of open access journals. The implications of this study for librarians, scholarly communication professionals, tenure-line faculty, departments, and programs are addressed.  相似文献

Abstract

This study examines what can be learned about a library’s electronic social work journal collection from usage statistics, survey data, faculty publications, and an examination of open access (OA) availability. A collections analysis was completed using data from two sources: a custom report by 1Science and results of a faculty survey on top journals for teaching. After creating a list of journals important to social work, top journals were identified by article downloads, faculty-authored publications, and references to faculty-authored papers. A publications analysis using faculty websites and author searches in Web of Science was also completed, to provide local, contextual data. SHERPA/RoMEO was used to determine the journals’ OA level and archiving policy. Library coverage for the journals was also included in the analysis. Results show that the McGill University Library has access to almost all of the journals identified as important to social work. Nearly one-third of publications authored by the McGill University School of Social Work since 2006 are OA, and more than half of the faculty in the school have at least one article published in an OA journal. While this is a good start for librarians who want to help faculty and students understand OA publishing and access, there is room for outreach in this area. While these results will aid librarians supporting faculty, students, and practitioners in the field of social work, a secondary aim of the study is to demonstrate a method that can be used by librarians undertaking similar analyses in other fields.  相似文献

Undergraduate modular instruction at the University of Kentucky is at present designed to afford students every opportunity to complete successfully more of the material usually tought in un unter gratuvate 3-credit service course with minimum risk to themselves. Graduate modules enable students to design a statistics program better suited to their individual needs. ABSTRACT

“The Sharpest Tool in the Shed” column seeks to introduce new systems and tools relating to scholarly publishing, serials, electronic resources, and more. This issue's column will focus on an important but often overlooked tool for anyone engaged in the work traditionally housed in technical services (TS)—advocacy for the work of technical services. This would include both advocacy regarding how technical services work supports the library's mission and the work in other divisions. How to make that work accessible for the novice to facilitate collaboration with other library departments is also discussed. As a serials catalog librarian at Michigan State University Libraries, I have worked to make advocacy a part of what I do and how I think about my work and the work of my colleagues. Locally, this has meant the development of a series of talks around TS expertise and projects to reach out to our colleagues about our work.  相似文献

Packet-based networks are more and more used to transport interactive streaming services like telephony and videophony. To guarantee a good quality for these services, the queuing delay and delay jitter introduced in the transport of voice or video flows over the packet-based network should be kept under control. Because data sources tend to increase their sending rate until (a part of) the network is congested, mixing real-time traffic and data traffic in one queue would lead to unacceptable high delays for real-time services. Therefore, voice and video packets need to get preferential treatment ( e.g. head-of-line priority) over data packets in the network nodes. Therefore, the queuing behavior of the voice and video packets can be studied more or less independently from the traffic generated by data services. Simple methods to assess the end-to-end delay are primordial. Since it is well known that an aggregate of voice (and CBR video) sources is accurately modeled by a Poisson arrival process and that delays in consecutive nodes are more or less statistically independent, this boils down to developing methods to calculate quantiles of the total queuing delay through a system of N statistically independent M/G/1 nodes. This paper develops four methods to calculate quantiles of the total queuing delay: a Gaussian method, a method based on the numerical inversion of the moment generating function of the total queuing delay developed by Abate and Whitt and two methods based on the assumption that the tail distribution of the individual queuing delay of one node is approximately exponential. The Gaussian method is the simplest, but only gives crude results. The method of Abate and Whitt is the most complex and breaks down for large quantiles. The methods based on the assumption of an exponential tail produce results that are more or less equally accurate as long as there is a node where the load is high enough.  相似文献

University drop-out is a topic of increasing concern in Italy as well as in other countries. In empirical analysis, university drop-out is generally measured by means of a binary variable indicating the drop-out versus retention. In this paper, we argue that the withdrawal decision is one of the possible outcomes of a set of four alternatives: retention in the same faculty, drop out, change of faculty within the same university, and change of institution. We examine individual-level data collected by the administrative offices of “Sapienza” University of Rome, which cover 117 072 students enrolling full-time for a 3-year degree in the academic years from 2001/2002 to 2006/2007. Relying on a non-parametric maximum likelihood approach in a finite mixture context, we introduce a multinomial latent effects model with endogeneity that accounts for both heterogeneity and omitted covariates. Our estimation results show that the decisions to change faculty or university have their own peculiarities, thus we suggest that caution should be used in interpreting results obtained without modeling all the relevant alternatives that students face.  相似文献

The purpose of the study is to evaluate electronic usage statistics for Belk Library at Elon University. The Electronic Resources Office (ERO) collects usage data for all serials—both print and electronic—, ebooks, and electronic databases. This study used ezPAARSE and Google Analytics to analyze the data from our website, and we will use these data to compare our vendor statistics to get a more complete picture of how the library's electronic resources are being used.  相似文献

Since The University of North Carolina at Greensboro's Jackson Library introduced Journal Finder in August 2001, the service has grown and evolved. Its features and capabilities have been expanded, enhanced, and refined, and a partnership program has been developed. Journal Finder enjoys significant initial success and appears to meet a real need in the research life of faculty and students. Additionally, Journal Finder has revealed several user trends with implications for the library, including the use of print serials, photocopying, interlibrary loan, and document delivery/pay-per-view, and it continues to provide insights and data for serials collection management decisions. As library budgets shrink and the cost of ejournals continues to rise, usage plays an increasingly important role in collections decisions. In 2013, the University of North Carolina (UNC) University Library Advisory Council's E-Journal Efficiencies Working Group created a document outlining best practices for increasing ejournal usage to assist UNC System libraries in improving their efficiency regarding ejournal spending. This article will address and elaborate on those practices, which include raising the visibility of ejournals on the library's website, using third-party services such as discovery tools and apps to create additional access points, facilitating outreach to faculty, and analyzing usage data.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to highlight the status and application of automated serials control in three central university libraries in India—namely, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). All three libraries have started to automate their serials processes, choosing either the Libsys or Virtua integrated library systems. AMU and JMI selected Libsys, while JNU installed Virtua—a product of VTLS Inc. Findings suggest that reasonable progress has been made with the use of different features of serials control systems in all these libraries. This information is helpful for other universities where libraries want to start the automation process.  相似文献

This article examines serials workflow adaptation at Notre Dame University Libraries in the context of migration from the NOTIS LMS to the Aleph 500 ILS. In addition to detailing three specific workflows—check-in, claiming, and binding—in NOTIS versus Aleph 500, the authors discuss the workflow adaptation process in general. Emphasis is placed not only on the pragmatic side of the process but also on its psychological aspects. The last section of the article outlines several suggestions for how to deal with expectations for workflow that simply do not match a new system's functionality. Abstract

Social bookmarking, repositories, networking, and other Web 2.0 technologies have the capacity to engage enormous numbers of ordinary people in networking, sharing, and working with digital resources. The Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong has been pioneering new educational applications. Through grants from the University we have developed a social bookmarking and repository system based on Web 2.0 ideas. RISAL—Repository of Interactive Social Assets for Learning has an unrealized potential to support teaching and learning at the University level. It is designed to facilitate and encourage sharing and collaboration of teachers and students with similar interests or learning foci across levels and programs. This form of learning support builds on and encourages the Web 2.0 culture of social networking and contribution of the individual to the community. In addition, the system is designed to incorporate compliance with Hong Kong's Copyright Ordinance (Creative Commons). The authors discuss the RISAL and describe its features and benefits that this system can offer to teaching and learning.  相似文献
