ABSTRACT

In this article, a procedure for comparisons between k (k ? 3) successive populations with respect to the variance is proposed when it is reasonable to assume that variances satisfy simple ordering. Critical constants required for the implementation of the proposed procedure are computed numerically and selected values of the computed critical constants are tabulated. The proposed procedure for normal distribution is extended for making comparisons between successive exponential populations with respect to scale parameter. A comparison between the proposed procedure and its existing competitor procedures is carried out, using Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the proposed procedure.  相似文献

Unbiased tests are found for various testing problems. In the first model considered we test homogeneity of k + 1 independent one-parameter exponential family populations vs. the tree-top ordering alternative. The tree-top alternative is appropriate for one-sided comparisons for treatments with a control. In the next set of models normality is assumed. In one such model k independent populations have different unknown means but have an unknown common variance. An independent estimate of the variance exists. We test homogeneity of means against the alternative of no homogeneity. We also consider the alternative of an ordering of the means as well as the tree-top ordering. The final model considered is when we take a random sample from a multivariate normal population with unknown mean vector and an unknown covariance matrix of the intraclass type. We test the hypothesis that the mean vector is the zero vector against the one-sided alternative that each mean is nonnegative (with at least one positive).  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate some stochastic comparisons in terms of likelihood ratio ordering between spacings from independent random variables exponentially distributed with different scale parameters. We partially solve some open problems in [Wen S, Lu Q, Hu T. Likelihood ratio orderings of spacings of heterogeneous exponential random variables. J Multivariate Anal. 2007;98:743–756] for a one-sample problem and in [Hu T, Lu Q, Wen S. Stochastic comparisons and dependence of spacings from two samples of exponential random variables. Commun Stat – Theory Methods 2006;35:979–988] for a two-sample problem. Specifically, we prove that the second spacing is always smaller than the third spacing in terms of the likelihood ratio order and we provide the ordering among all spacings in the case n=4. In the two-sample case, we establish comparisons between the second spacings related to each sample under certain conditions.  相似文献

Two-sample comparisons belonging to basic class of statistical inference are extensively applied in practice. There is a rich statistical literature regarding different parametric methods to address these problems. In this context, most of the powerful techniques are assumed to be based on normally distributed populations. In practice, the alternative distributions of compared samples are commonly unknown. In this case, one can propose a combined test based on the following decision rules: (a) the likelihood-ratio test (LRT) for equality of two normal populations and (b) the Shapiro–Wilk (S-W) test for normality. The rules (a) and (b) can be merged by, e.g., using the Bonferroni correction technique to offer the correct comparison of the samples distribution. Alternatively, we propose the exact density-based empirical likelihood (DBEL) ratio test. We develop the tsc package as the first R package available to perform the two-sample comparisons using the exact test procedures: the LRT; the LRT combined with the S-W test; as well as the newly developed DBEL ratio test. We demonstrate Monte Carlo (MC) results and a real data example to show an efficiency and excellent applicability of the developed procedure.  相似文献

Semiparametric Analysis of Truncated Data   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Randomly truncated data are frequently encountered in many studies where truncation arises as a result of the sampling design. In the literature, nonparametric and semiparametric methods have been proposed to estimate parameters in one-sample models. This paper considers a semiparametric model and develops an efficient method for the estimation of unknown parameters. The model assumes that K populations have a common probability distribution but the populations are observed subject to different truncation mechanisms. Semiparametric likelihood estimation is studied and the corresponding inferences are derived for both parametric and nonparametric components in the model. The method can also be applied to two-sample problems to test the difference of lifetime distributions. Simulation results and a real data analysis are presented to illustrate the methods.  相似文献

A number of statistical problems use the moment generating function (mgf) for purposes other than determining the moments of a distribution. If the distribution is not completely specified, then the mgf must be estimated from available data. The empirical mgf makes no assumptions concerning the underlying distribution except for the existence of the mgf. In contrast to the nonparametric approach provided by the empirical mgf, alternative estimators can be formed based on an assumed parametric model. Comparison of these approaches is considered for two parametric models; the normal and a one parameter gamma. Comparison criteria are efficiency and empirical confidence interval coverage. In general the parametric estimators outperform the empirical mgf when the model is correct. The comparisons are extended to underlying models which are two component mixtures from the distributional family assumed by the parametric estimators. Under the mixture models the superiority of the parametric estimator depends upon the model, value of the argument of the mgf, and the comparison criterion. The empirical mgf is the better estimator in some cases.  相似文献

The optimal allocation of observations when there is a natural ordering in the k normal population means is discussed. It is shown that the design which minimizes the total mean square error of the maximum likelihood estimators in the null case allocates half the observations to each of the two extreme populations. The design is obviously optimal for testing the homogeneity of means against the simple ordered alternative. It is, however, hardly acceptable for the estimation in the nonnull case. It is, therefore, shown that the observations could be allocated to the non-extreme populations according to weights which are proportional to the absolute values of the Abelson and Tukey scores at the same time keeping the minimum local power for testing the simple ordered alternative to be maximal. The design gives also the maximum minimum power, not local, for the alternative in the class of linear tests. It, of course, suffers from a small loss of efficiency for the estimation under the null case but is much better under the nonnull case than the extreme design which allocates half the observations to each of the two extreme populations. Some numerical comparisons of the mean square errors are given.  相似文献

Stochastic ordering relations between extreme order statistics from exponential, Weibull and gamma distributions have been studied extensively by many researchers in recent years. In this work, we obtain various ordering results for the comparisons of two extreme order statistics from scale models when one set of scale parameters majorizes the other. The new results obtained here are applied when the baseline distributions are exponentiated Weibull or generalized gamma distributions. In this way, we generalize and extend some results established recently in the literature.  相似文献

In this paper, a comparison between the life distribution of a new unit with that of a used unit in the increasing convex order is made leading to a new class of life distributions which we call “new better than used in convex ordering of second order”. This class includes as subclasses the NBU and the NBUC and is a subclass of the NBUCA class. Preservation properties under convolution, random maxima, mixing and formation of coherent structures are established. Stochastic comparisons of the excess lifetime when the inter-arrival times belong to the NBUC(2) class are developed. Some applications of Poisson shock models and a test of exponentiality against NBUC(2) alternative are presented.  相似文献

When testing treatment effects in multi‐arm clinical trials, the Bonferroni method or the method of Simes 1986) is used to adjust for the multiple comparisons. When control of the family‐wise error rate is required, these methods are combined with the close testing principle of Marcus et al. (1976). Under weak assumptions, the resulting p‐values all give rise to valid tests provided that the basic test used for each treatment is valid. However, standard tests can be far from valid, especially when the endpoint is binary and when sample sizes are unbalanced, as is common in multi‐arm clinical trials. This paper looks at the relationship between size deviations of the component test and size deviations of the multiple comparison test. The conclusion is that multiple comparison tests are as imperfect as the basic tests at nominal size α/m where m is the number of treatments. This, admittedly not unexpected, conclusion implies that these methods should only be used when the component test is very accurate at small nominal sizes. For binary end‐points, this suggests use of the parametric bootstrap test. All these conclusions are supported by a detailed numerical study.  相似文献

In order to avoid wrong conclusions in any further analysis, it is of importance to conduct a formal comparison for characteristic quantities of the distributions. These characteristic quantities we are familiar with include mean, quantity and reliability function, and so on. In this paper, we consider two tests aiming at the comparisons for function of parameters in Pareto distribution based on record values. They are generalized p-value-based test and parametric bootstrap-based test, respectively. The resulting procedures are easy to compute and are applicable to small samples. A simulation study is conducted to investigate and compare the performance of the proposed tests. A phenomenon we note is that generalized p-value-based test almost uniformly outperforms the parametric bootstrap-based test.  相似文献

Semi-variograms are useful for describing the correlation strucure of spatial random variables. Valid semi-variograms must be conditionally negative definite. To ensure this restriction when estimating these functions, a valid parametric model is typically fitted to a sample semi-variogram. Recently, a method of fitting valid semi-variograms without having to choose a parametric family has been described in the literature. The method is based on the spectral representation of positive definite functions. In this paper, the method is evaluated using simulated data. The fits obtained using the non-parametric method are compared with fits obtained by fitting four parametric models (exponential, Gaussian, rational quadratic and power) to simulated data using non-linear least squares. The comparisons are based on the integrated squared errors of the resulting fits. The non-parametric estimator always resulted in fits that were as good as those obtained using the parametric models. The non-parametric method is faster, easier to use and more objective than the parametric methods. Some examples are presented.  相似文献

Missing covariate data are common in biomedical studies. In this article, by using the non parametric kernel regression technique, a new imputation approach is developed for the Cox-proportional hazard regression model with missing covariates. This method achieves the same efficiency as the fully augmented weighted estimators (Qi et al. 2005. Journal of the American Statistical Association, 100:1250) and has a simpler form. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator are derived and analyzed. The comparisons between the proposed imputation method and several other existing methods are conducted via a number of simulation studies and a mouse leukemia data.  相似文献

There is a wide variety of stochastic ordering problems where K groups (typically ordered with respect to time) are observed along with a (continuous) response. The interest of the study may be on finding the change-point group, i.e. the group where an inversion of trend of the variable under study is observed. A change point is not merely a maximum (or a minimum) of the time-series function, but a further requirement is that the trend of the time-series is monotonically increasing before that point, and monotonically decreasing afterwards. A suitable solution can be provided within a conditional approach, i.e. by considering some suitable nonparametric combination of dependent tests for simple stochastic ordering problems. The proposed procedure is very flexible and can be extended to trend and/or repeated measure problems. Some comparisons through simulations and examples with the well known Mack & Wolfe test for umbrella alternative and with Page’s test for trend problems with correlated data are investigated.  相似文献

In two-sample comparison problems it is often of interest to examine whether one distribution function majorises the other, that is, for the presence of stochastic ordering. This paper develops a nonparametric test for stochastic ordering from size-biased data, allowing the pattern of the size bias to differ between the two samples. The test is formulated in terms of a maximally selected local empirical likelihood statistic. A Gaussian multiplier bootstrap is devised to calibrate the test. Simulation results show that the proposed test outperforms an analogous Wald-type test, and that it provides substantially greater power over ignoring the size bias. The approach is illustrated using data on blood alcohol concentration of drivers involved in car accidents, where the size bias is due to drunker drivers being more likely to be involved in accidents. Further, younger drivers tend to be more affected by alcohol, so in making comparisons with older drivers the analysis is adjusted for differences in the patterns of size bias.  相似文献

Several methods for comparing k populations have been proposed in the literature. These methods assess the same null hypothesis of equal distributions but differ in the alternative hypothesis they consider. We focus on two important alternative hypotheses: monotone and umbrella ordering. Two new families of test statistics are proposed, including two known tests, as well as two new powerful tests under monotone ordering. Furthermore, these families are adapted for testing umbrella ordering. We compare some members of the families with respect to power and Type I errors under different simulation scenarios. Finally, the methods are illustrated in several applications to real data.  相似文献

Mixtures of increasing failure rate distributions (IFR) can decrease at least in some intervals of time. Usually, this property can be observed asymptotically as t → ∞. This is due to the fact that the mixture failure rate is “bent down” compared with the corresponding unconditional expectation of the baseline failure rate, which was proved previously for some specific cases. We generalize this result and discuss the “weakest populations are dying first” property, which leads to the change in the failure rate shape. We also consider the problem of mixture failure rate ordering for the ordered mixing distributions. Two types of stochastic ordering are analyzed: ordering in the likelihood ratio sense and ordering in variances when the means are equal.  相似文献

In this paper, we suggest classification procedures of an observation into one of two exponential populations assuming a known ordering between population parameters. We propose classification rules when either location or scale parameters are ordered. Some of these classification rules under ordering are better than usual classification rules with respect to the expected probability of correct classification. We also derive likelihood ratio-based classification rules. Comparison of these classification rules has been done using Monte Carlo simulations.  相似文献

In this paper we compare the minimums of two independent and heterogeneous samples each following Kumaraswamy (Kw)-G distribution with the same and the different parent distribution functions. The comparisons are carried out with respect to usual stochastic ordering and hazard rate ordering with majorized shape parameters of the distributions. The likelihood ratio ordering between the minimum order statistics is established for heterogeneous multiple-outlier Kw-G random variables with the same parent distribution function.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a nonparametric test for homogeneity of overall variabilities for two multi-dimensional populations. Comparisons between the proposed nonparametric procedure and the asymptotic parametric procedure and a permutation test based on standardized generalized variances are made when the underlying populations are multivariate normal. We also study the performance of these test procedures when the underlying populations are non-normal. We observe that the nonparametric procedure and the permutation test based on standardized generalized variances are not as powerful as the asymptotic parametric test under normality. However, they are reliable and powerful tests for comparing overall variability under other multivariate distributions such as the multivariate Cauchy, the multivariate Pareto and the multivariate exponential distributions, even with small sample sizes. A Monte Carlo simulation study is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed procedures. An example from an educational study is used to illustrate the proposed nonparametric test.  相似文献
